Understand who Exu really is arrow_forward

Who is the Povo da Rua?

In Umbanda and Quimbanda, the Exus and the Pombagiras form the so-called Povo da Rua: spirits that work as guardians and protectors of each person. Contrary to what prejudice insists on repeating, Exu is not a demon. The demonization came from the repression of Afro-Brazilian religions, not from tradition. Exu is a guardian, messenger, and tireless worker.

Each guardian has their own way of acting: Sete Encruzilhadas opens paths in all directions; Tranca-Ruas locks the door against evil; Maria Padilha works on self-love and dignity. This quiz crosses your answers with the archetypes that tradition associates with each of them.

Important: this is educational and self-knowledge content. The Exu Orixá (the Yoruba divinity) is not to be confused with the Exus da esquerda (the spirits of the Povo da Rua). And your guardião de coroa (crown guardian) is revealed inside a house, in the jogo (divination) and in the development, conducted by the leader. Treat the theme with the respect it deserves.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone have an Exu? expand_more

In the view of Umbanda and Quimbanda, every person is accompanied by a guardian Exu or Pombagira, who acts as a personal protector. He walks by your side defending, opening paths and warding off what causes harm, even if you do not yet know him by name.

How do I know which Exu works with me? expand_more

This test is a playful entry point, based on the archetypes of each guardian. Your crown Exu or Pombagira is revealed inside a terreiro, by the house leader, through mediumship development and the jogo (divination). Only there is the name confirmed.

What is the difference between Exu Orixá and Exu of the left? expand_more

Exu Orixá is the Yoruba divinity, the first to be greeted in any ritual, the messenger between humans and the Orixás. The Exus of the left (such as Tranca-Ruas or Sete Encruzilhadas) are spirits of the Povo da Rua, spirits that work as guardians in Umbanda and Quimbanda. They are different planes, linked by the same name.

Are Exu and Pombagira the same thing? expand_more

They are from the same spiritual family, the Povo da Rua, but with different energies. Exu is the masculine force of this people; Pombagira, the feminine force, linked to love, self-esteem, and liberation. They work together and complete each other.

Is Exu a bad thing or a demon? expand_more

No. This is a confusion born from prejudice and the demonization of African-rooted religions. Exu has no relation to the Christian devil: he is a guardian, messenger, and tireless worker, who protects those who walk the right path. To respect Exu is to respect a legitimate and ancestral tradition.
