Exu (Eshu) Caveira candle
Guardian of the Calunga for cutting spiritual attacks (demanda), disobsession, and closing cycles
Exu Caveira candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Those who seek the Exu Caveira candle almost always arrive tired: a home that does not improve, bad sleep, the feeling of carrying something that is not yours. It is the candle of the cemetery guardian, a falange of the Povo da Rua that works in Umbanda, within the Linha das Almas, and in Quimbanda, where Exu and Pombagira are the center of worship. Black gathers and cuts; white reminds that all this ritual work is done under the law.
The skull of the name scares those who look from the outside, but in the terreiro it speaks of equality and of passage: before death no one takes vanity. For this reason, many houses bring Exu Caveira close to the vibration of Obaluaê, the orixá (orisha) who guards the souls and the earth. Monday is the day of the Povo da Rua, and the leadership of the falange is usually attributed to João Caveira, although the names and hierarchy change from house to house.
At home, this candle asks for more seriousness than a common colored candle. It is not for curiosity nor for venting anger on anyone. It is a firmeza of cleansing and protection: if the case is serious, it opens the path, but the one who resolves the demanda with foundation is the terreiro.
What is it for
What is the Exu Caveira Candle for
The Exu Caveira candle is black and white, the colors of the guardian of Calunga Pequena, the cemetery. It is set to cut heavy loads, ward off an obsessing spirit, end phases that have already died, and protect those who walk with the truth.
-
Cut spiritual attack and heavy load
When everything gets stuck at the same time and the house feels heavy, the candle asks the guardian to collect what was sent and return each thing to its place.
-
Ward off obsessing spirit and disturbing spirit
Repeated nightmares, irritation without reason, bad presence in the bedroom. The firmeza asks that the lord of Calunga send away those who are lost and leave your house in peace.
-
End a phase that has already finished
A relationship that ended but won't leave your head, a grief that won't settle, a job that is already dead. Exu Caveira helps to bury what passed so that life can move forward again.
-
See the truth and unmask lies
For those who suspect falsehood nearby. The candle does not point out culprits for you, but it usually clarifies what was hidden and gives courage to face it.
-
Guard of the house and of those who live in it
Lit at the entrance of the house or near the door, it firms the guardian as a watchman of the home against envy, heavy visits, and the energy of those who arrive with bad intentions.
Who rules this candle
Orixás and spirits of the Exu Caveira Candle
-
Exu Caveira
Guardian of Calunga Pequena
He is the owner of the candle. He works in the cemetery, where cycles end, and wears black and white: the black that collects the charge and the white of the souls. That is why the candle has these two colors, and no other.
-
Obaluaê (Omulu)
Lord of the earth and the souls
Many houses place the cemetery falange under the vibration of Obaluaê, who guards the passage between life and death. It is a line affinity, not the same figure: the orixá is not an Exu.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the Exu Caveira candle to the guardian of the Calunga
“Lord Exu Caveira, guardian of the gate where everyone arrives equal, I ask permission to light this light before you. I do not come to ask for anyone's evil. I come to ask that you collect what is not mine and what is weighing on me and on this house. What was sent, let it return to the earth and dissolve. The spirit that was lost on my path, direct it with firmeza and with charity. Give me courage to bury what is already over and eyes to see who truly wants me well. May I always walk with the truth in my mouth, because it is her that you protect. I thank you for your guard, today and in the days to come. Laroyê, Exu Caveira!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to firmar the Exu Caveira Candle
- 1
Take the cleansing bath before
A ritual bath of rue or guinea hen weed, from the neck down, removes the bulk of the burden before setting the candle. Whoever arrives clean to light it makes the guardian's work lighter.
- 2
Set it outside the bedroom
A left-side candle does not stay on the headboard. Prefer the backyard, the service area, or near the front door, on the floor or on a low base, away from the congá of the orixás.
- 3
Ask for permission and state the prayer request clearly
Hail the guardian with the greeting, say your full name, and speak what needs to be cut. A vague prayer request yields a vague result; a prayer request against someone should not be made.
- 4
Light and say the prayer
Light with a match, place the cachaça beside it if it is a custom in your home, and pray calmly. Then step away and let the guardian work without watching the flame.
- 5
Perform the despacho with respect at the end
Do not blow. When the candle finishes, the cachaça goes to the earth and the salt goes to the drain with running water. The glass and the leftover wax go to the trash, wrapped, away from the house.
Precautions before lighting
- A 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: place it on ceramic or clay, away from curtains, dry brush, children, and animals, and never leave the house with it in an insecure location.
- Do not light this to ask for evil, punishment, or to bind anyone's will. Exu Caveira works by the law of cause and effect, and a crooked request has no support from the left.
- Serious demanda, strong obsession, or the assentamento of Exu is a matter for the zelador of your terreiro. The candle at home helps, but it does not replace the fundamento of the house of the orixás (casa de santo).
- Insomnia, constant fear, or sadness that does not pass also require medical care. The candle accompanies the treatment and never takes the place of the doctor or the psychologist.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Exu Caveira Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High and firm flame until the end
Many houses read this as a request accepted and a clear path for the guardian to work. The week usually runs without any setbacks.
- Good sign
Glass completely clean after the burning
The wax burned completely and left no mark. It is read as energy collected without resistance, a sign that the cutting went well.
- Attention
Black glass from soot
Shows that there was a great weight being burned. Wash the glass, take another banho de descarrego and, if it persists, take the case to a trusted terreiro.
- Attention
Crackling flame that releases sparks
Usually indicates spiritual dispute during the cutting. It is not a reason for panic: reinforce the prayer and keep the candle lit until the end.
- Observe
Low flame that almost disappears
First check the wick drowned in wax and the wind. Once that is resolved, follow the firmeza; if the flame does not sustain, repeat the candle on the following Monday.
Ritual bath and smoke cleansing (defumação)
Herbs that combine with the Exu Caveira Candle
-
Rue
Ruta graveolens
The quintessential herb of Exu. The ritual bath of arruda before lighting removes the heaviest load and prepares the body for the guardian's firmeza.
See the herb -
guiné / Tipi
Petiveria alliacea
Cuts through envy and the evil eye with strength. A branch of guiné next to the candle or behind the door reinforces the house's watch during the seven days.
See the herb -
Pinhão-Roxo / Pinhão-Paraguaio
Jatropha gossypiifolia
Leaf for heavy spiritual cleansing and protection of the entrance. Many houses use it in a ritual bath or by sweeping the floor from outside to inside before firmar.
See the herb -
Pepper tree (aroeira)
Schinus terebinthifolius
Plant of defense and strong cleansing. The dry leaf in the smoke cleansing, before lighting, helps to ward off presences that are stuck in the environment.

Questions about the Exu Caveira Candle
Does Exu Caveira do harm to those who light his candle?
No. Exu Caveira is a guardian and works by the law, not for revenge. Whoever lights it with respect and a clean request receives protection. The reputation of being evil comes from prejudice against African-rooted religions, and not from what is lived inside the terreiro.
What is the best day to light the Exu Caveira candle?
Monday, which is the day of the povo da rua, preferably at dusk. Some houses also set the candle on All Souls' Day, when many people visit the cemetery, but this date is not a rule for the falange. Follow the custom of your house.
Can I light the Exu Caveira candle inside the house?
You can, but outside the bedroom and away from the altar of the orixás. The most indicated place is near the entrance door, in the service area or in the backyard, on a low and secure base. A left-side candle guards the passage, so it stays where one enters and exits.
Can I blow out the Exu Caveira candle before it finishes?
The correct way is to let it burn until the end. If it is dangerous to keep it lit, smother it with a saucer, without blowing, and relight it as soon as you can with the same prayer. Blowing it out in the middle and forgetting it is like abandoning the prayer request that you yourself made to the guardian.
What to do with the glass of cachaça and the leftover candle?
The cachaça goes to the earth, in a garden bed or at the foot of a tree, and the glass is washed in running water. The glass and the leftover wax will be wrapped for the trash, outside the house. None of this is reused in another firmeza.
What is the difference between the Exu Caveira candle and a common black candle?
The black candle is for cutting and absorption, without a specific destination until you consecrate it. The Exu Caveira candle already comes with the label and the colors of the guardian of Calunga, black and white, and it goes directly to the cemetery falange (spiritual legion) for requests of cleansing and release from obsessing spirits (desobsessão).
Is Exu Caveira the same thing as Obaluaê or Omulu?
No. Obaluaê is an orixá, worshipped in Candomblé and in Umbanda. Exu Caveira is a falange (spiritual legion) of guardians of the povo da rua. Many houses associate the two because of the connection with the souls and the cemetery, but they are different figures, each with its own worship.
