The Orixás are deities originating from the Yoruba culture, people of West Africa (current Nigeria and Benin). Brought to Brazil by enslaved Africans, they took root and reinvented themselves here, giving rise to genuinely Brazilian religions such as Candomblé and Umbanda.
More than "gods" in the Western sense, the Orixás are personified forces of nature. Each rules an element (water, fire, forest, winds, earth) and an aspect of human life (love, justice, work, healing, paths).
Each Orixá has its sacred colors, its day of worship, its herbs, its offerings and its greeting. Knowing them is the first step for those entering Afro-Brazilian religions.
