Every smoke cleansing (defumação) has two moments. The spiritual cleansing (descarrego) uses hot herbs, such as rue and guinea hen weed, and removes what weighs down. The lustral uses rosemary, lavender, and benzoin and returns peace to the already cleaned space. Think of a cleaning: first you sweep, then you perfume.
The path of the smoke changes with the intention. To clean, you walk from the back of the house to the street door. To call for prosperity, enter through the door and smoke inward. And when the weight is on the person, the smoke passes around the body, from the neck down.
If the load continues after the spiritual cleansing (descarrego), or if the suffering is great, seek a serious terreiro. In Umbanda, heavy spiritual cleansing (descarrego) is work of the left, with Exus guardians and Pombagiras.
