Quimbanda

The tradition of the Exus and Pombagiras, guardians of the crossroads, lords of the paths and workers of love and transformation.

Tradition & Mystery

What is Quimbanda?

Quimbanda is an African-rooted spiritual tradition, with roots in the Bantu people of Angola and Congo. It focuses on the worship of Exus and Pombagiras, spirits that inhabit the crossroads, the cemeteries and the boundaries between worlds.

It is important to differentiate Quimbanda from Umbanda: while in Umbanda the Exus are one of the groups of spirits within a broader religion, in Quimbanda the Exus and Pombagiras are the central spirits, worshiped with specific rituals, chants and offerings, without the Kardecist or Catholic influence of Umbanda.

Quimbanda is frequently misunderstood and associated with "evil", which is a misconception resulting from religious prejudice. Exus and Pombagiras are powerful spirits that work with truth, justice and transformation.

Foundation & Respect

How to worship in Quimbanda

Worship in Quimbanda is guided by fundamento (the knowledge of the pontos cantados, the assentamentos, and the correct ways to greet and work with each spirit). Everything is done under the guidance of the pai or mãe de santo, with seriousness and respect, never as a joke.

The offerings are a central part of the relationship with Exus and Pombagiras: each spirit has its preferences, its colors, its drinks, and its days. Delivered at crossroads, in the woods, or in appropriate locations, they express gratitude and strengthen the spiritual connection between the medium and the guardian.

Respect is the word that defines Quimbanda. Exus and Pombagiras are lords and ladies of great wisdom, who protect and guide those who treat them with dignity. For those who walk this path, Joia Mística Laroyê offers statues, bead necklaces, candles, and offering items, in Extrema, Minas Gerais, and throughout Brazil.
