Exu (Eshu) Marabô candle
The strategic guardian of the crossroads, for business, truth, and cutting off demanda
Exu Marabô candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Those who seek the Exu Marabô candle generally already know who they want to speak with. Marabô is the refined Exu, with a cape, cane, and measured speech, who solves through intelligence what others solve with force. His candle brings the colors of the left side, red and black, and the label with the image of the guardian, so that the firmeza goes directly to him and not to the entire line. It is used in Umbanda and in Quimbanda, in the houses that work with this falange.
In many houses, Marabô arrives as a head of falange on the left, respected for his measured word. He is not an orixá (orisha): he is a guardian exu, a spirit that works under the vibration of Exu. Monday is the day of Exu in most houses, but many terreiros give Friday to Marabô, and there are those who use Tuesday. His connection with an orixá also changes: many place him near Ogum (Ogun) or Xangô (Shango), others near Oxóssi (Oshosi).
Outside the terreiro, this candle requires more care than a colored candle. It does not go on the altar of the orixás or in the bedroom: it stays at the entrance, in the outdoor area, or in the tronqueira of those who have one. And Marabô does not accept any request. He works with those who speak clearly, fulfill what they promise, and do not use his name to harm anyone.
What is it for
What is the purpose of the Exu Marabô Candle
Red on top, black on the bottom, with the guardian's label. The Exu Marabô candle is lit for the strategist of the povo da rua when the prayer request involves work, commerce, a hidden truth, or a demanda that needs to be cut with a cool head.
-
Protect commerce and work
For those who have a shop, office, or own service and feel the movement is stuck or the environment is heavy. The candle asks that Marabô guard the door and keep away those who arrive to interfere.
-
Ask for clarity in an important agreement
Before signing a contract, closing a partnership, or negotiating. The prayer request is for discernment: to see the hidden clause and the intention of the person sitting on the other side of the table.
-
Bring a lie to light
Marabô has a reputation for undoing deception. The candle is lit when you suspect betrayal or gossip at work and want the truth to appear, without asking for punishment for anyone.
-
Cut a demanda of envy
When the feeling is of the evil eye, of ritual work done against you, or of a charge sent by a rival. The firmeza asks that the guardian undo what arrived and return the energy far from your home.
-
Decide with a cool head
For big choices, such as changing jobs, investing, or closing a business. Marabô is the strategist: the flame helps you think before acting, and the decision remains yours.

Prayer to light
Exu Marabô candle prayer to the guardian of the crossroads
“Lord Exu Marabô, guardian of firm step and right word, accept this red and black light that I light in your name. I come with respect and without detour. Watch over my work and the door through which my livelihood enters. Show me what is hidden in the agreements I make and do not let me sign what harms me. What was sent against me by envy, undo and take far away, without me needing to wish ill on whoever sent it. Give my head your calm of one who calculates before acting. What I promised, I fulfill. Laroyê, Exu Marabô!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to set the Exu Marabô Candle
- 1
Choose a place outside the altar
The firmeza of Marabô stays near the door, in the backyard, in the outdoor area, or in the tronqueira. Never inside the bedroom or next to the statues of the orixás and the saints.
- 2
Ask for permission first
Greet Exu with a Laroyê and ask permission to set. If you attend a terreiro, confirm with the zelador if the house works with Marabô and the way it works.
- 3
State the prayer request clearly
Hold the candle and say what you want in a few words, with name, place, and subject. Exu does not like vague prayer requests or bargaining: whatever you offer, fulfill.
- 4
Light and set the offering
Light with a match, place the candle on the saucer and, if it is the custom of your house, the glass of marafo next to it. Say the prayer and stay in silence for a while before the flame.
- 5
Give thanks and collect the remains
Do not blow out the candle. When it finishes, give thanks. The leftover wax goes in the trash, wrapped in paper, and the marafo can be poured on the ground, away from the door.
Precautions before lighting
- A 7-day candle lit outside the house needs shelter from the wind and a floor that will not catch fire. Keep away from dry plants, awnings, children, and animals.
- Do not use the Marabô candle to bind someone's will or to ask for harm against a rival. This is not the ritual work of a guardian of Law.
- Consecrated foundation (assentamento), offering at the crossroads and deeper ritual work are matters for the zelador of your terreiro. The candle at home does not replace this guidance.
- In matters of justice or contracts, the candle asks for clarity and protection, but it does not replace a lawyer, an accountant, or the deadlines you need to meet.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Exu Marabô Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High flame without flickering
Many houses read this as a sign that the guardian accepted the firmeza. The request was heard and the candle works without resistance in the environment.
- Attention
Flame that crackles or releases sparks
It is usually read as a charge being cut or as Exu responding with strength. If it repeats constantly, it is worth talking to the zelador of a trusted terreiro.
- Attention
Black smoke and dark saucer
Indicates that there was weight to be burned in the place. It is not a reason for fear: clean the saucer, take a herbal bath and repeat the candle on a Monday.
- Observe
Wax dripping down the red part
Some houses read the tear on the red as movement in the requested matter. Before interpreting, check if the candle is straight and away from a draft.
- Observe
Candle that goes out before the end
On the street, the wind is usually to blame, and a crooked wick too. Ruling that out, relight it calmly and see if any of your promises remain unfulfilled.
Ritual bath and smoke cleansing (defumação)

Questions about the Exu Marabô Candle
What is the Exu Marabô candle for?
It serves to ask for protection for work and commerce, clarity in agreements, truth about a lie, and cutting of a demanda. Marabô is the strategist exu, so the candle is sought when the problem requires intelligence and firmeza, and not just force.
What is the right day to light the Exu Marabô candle?
Monday, which is the day of Exu in most houses. Some terreiros give Friday to Marabô, so follow the custom of your house. The most used time is at night, after it gets dark.
Can I light the Exu Marabô candle inside the house?
The most indicated is outside: near the door, in the backyard, or at the tronqueira. Those who live in apartments usually set it near the entrance, on a saucer only for Exu, away from the altar of the orixás and the bedroom.
What is the difference between the Marabô candle and the red and black candle?
The colors are the same. The common red and black candle goes to the Povo da Rua as a whole, while the Marabô one carries the guardian's label and directs the request to him and to his falange.
Can I blow out the Exu Marabô candle?
Do not blow it out. If you need to interrupt for safety, smother it with a saucer or a spoon and relight it as soon as you can, saying again who the candle is for. For the povo de santo (people of the religion), the breath cuts the strength that you just delivered to the guardian.
What to do with the rest of the candle and the marafo?
The marafo returns to the earth, in a garden bed or in the backyard, away from the entrance. The wax remains are wrapped and taken to the trash, and the cup and saucer are washed and kept only for Exu.
Is Exu Marabô evil or is he the devil?
No. Marabô is a guardian who works for order and for the truth. The idea that Exu is the devil comes from colonial catechism and is a form of religious racism. He demands respect and a kept word, but he is not a force of evil.
