Those looking for the Exu do Lodo candle have usually already tried other things. Life is not moving, the house has stagnant air, and no one can point to a culprit. This candle, in black and red colors, is lit for the falange of guardians that works exactly in this area. It appears in the left gira of Umbanda and in Quimbanda, always as an Exu guardian candle, and not of the orixá (orisha) Exu.

The name already tells the foundation. Lodo is what forms where the water stopped flowing, and the falange acts where the energy stagnated. Instead of cutting, it unblocks. Because of the mud, many houses place this people under the regency of Omulu, lord of the earth, and of Nanã, owner of the mud at the bottom of the rivers. Others treat the falange as common crossroads people. Monday is the most cited day in both readings.

It is worth knowing what to expect. Stirring the bottom brings up what was deposited, and many people who work with this guardian report that things get stirred up before they settle. Therefore, the candle asks for patience and, for a large request, the guidance of a terreiro. It is not meant to harm anyone: the service of the mud (lodo) is to clean and return movement.

What is it for

What is the purpose of the Exu do Lodo Candle

Black and red like every candle of the povo de rua, the Exu do Lodo candle is firmada for the falange that works in the background: stagnant situations, a heavy house after illness or mourning, a path that blocked with no enemy in sight, and a cleansing that a common bath did not resolve.

  • Make what is stuck move

Stalled process, a sale that does not happen, a project that does not move from its place without a clear reason. The candle asks that the guardian remove what settled on the path. The daily effort remains yours.

  • Remove the weight of the house after illness or mourning

After a long illness or a loss in the family, the environment usually becomes dense. Lit on the outside, the candle asks that this residue be collected and taken away.

  • Deep cleansing that the bath did not reach

When you have already taken a banho de descarrego and the feeling of dirtiness continues, the Lodo candle enters as reinforcement, to move what remained deposited deeper down.

  • Resolve to let go of an addiction

Many people light it to ask for strength against alcohol or another dependency. The candle sustains the will and the spiritual protection, always alongside treatment and those who care for you.

  • Keep away what feeds on discouragement

In phases of deep sadness, there are houses that ask Lodo to keep away spirits that take advantage of weakness. It is a request for protection, made calmly, and not for a fight.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the Exu do Lodo candle for what is stuck

“Exu do Lodo, guardian of the waters that do not flow, I light this candle and call you with respect. You know the depths where I cannot see. Carefully stir what has settled in my life and take far away what has already rotted. If it is necessary to stir it up before it settles, give me patience to wait. With the permission of Omulu and Nanã, ask that this house breathe and move again. I ask no harm for anyone, I only ask that the path run again like clean water. Receive my light and my word, and I will return to give thanks. Laroyê, Exu do Lodo!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Exu do Lodo Candle

  1. 1

    Ask for permission first

If you attend a terreiro, inform the zelador that you will set the Lodo. At home, the left candle stays outside or near the door, never in the bedroom or on the altar of the orixás.

  2. 2

Form the bottom on the saucer

Spread the earth on the saucer and moisten it with a little water, like a bit of mud. It is the guardian's ground, and the candle stays firm on top of it.

  3. 3

Pass the candle over the body

With the candle extinguished, perform a spiritual pass from head to toe, from top to bottom, showing what is stuck in you. Then place it on the saucer, with the glass of water beside it.

  4. 4

Light it and call by name

Light with a match, hail with Laroyê and say the prayer request in a few words, without bargaining and without resentment. Perform the prayer and promise to return to give thanks.

  5. 5

    Accompany without blowing

Let the flame work for seven days. If needed, smother it with a lid and relight it later. At the end, the earth and water go to a pot or earthen ground, and the wax goes wrapped in the trash.

Precautions before lighting

  • 7-day candle requires a firm and safe place: away from curtains, dry brush, and animals, with no one sleeping nearby. Outside the house, protect it from the wind.
  • Exu do Lodo is a guardian and deserves respect. Do not light it as a joke or to harm someone, and fulfill the gratitude you promise.
  • Offering by a riverbank, consecrated foundation (assentamento), and Quimbanda ritual work require foundation. The one who guides this is the zelador of your house, not the internet.
  • In addiction, depression, or any illness, the candle accompanies the treatment and never replaces it. Seek a doctor, psychologist, and support groups.

What the flame of the Exu do Lodo candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

Low flame that grows little by little

For this candle, it is the expected burning. Many houses read that the guardian started from the back and opened up space until the flame became firm.

  • Good sign

Wax that boils and then stabilizes

It is read as a sign that something was moved and absorbed. When the flame settles immediately after, the custom is to understand that the ritual work continued.

  • Attention

A lot of black soot in the cup or on the saucer

Shows dense energy being burned. Clean everything afterward and, if the soot returns in several consecutive candles, take the case to a trusted terreiro.

  • Attention

Candle that cries wax from one side only

Some houses read as a request for attention to a part of life that was left out. Think about what was not said and redo the prayer calmly.

  • Observe

Flame that goes out at the beginning

First check the wind, the moisture of the ground near the wick and the quality of the candle. Once corrected, light it again and repeat the request without haste.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Exu do Lodo Candle

What is the Exu do Lodo candle for?

It serves to unlock what remained stuck for no apparent reason. It is lit to clean the house after illness or mourning, to reinforce a descarrego that did not resolve, and to request firmeza during phases of stagnation. It is not a fast-acting candle: its ritual work is slow and deep.

What is the best day to light the Exu do Lodo candle?

Monday, at night. It is the day of the povo de rua and also of Omulu, who in some houses is the regent of the falange. If your terreiro has another custom, follow that of your house.

Can I light the Exu do Lodo candle inside the house?

You can, but near the door or in an outdoor area, and not in the bedroom or near the orixás. A candle of the left guards the entrance. Those who already have a firmada tronqueira light it there, with the permission of the zelador.

Can I blow out the Exu do Lodo candle before it finishes?

Avoid it. If there is no way to leave it lit safely, smother it with a lid or saucer, without blowing, and relight it as soon as you can. The blown breath is seen as undoing the very request you made.

What to do with the earth, the water, and the leftover wax?

The earth and water return to the ground: a garden bed, a large pot, or a plot of land. The leftover wax goes wrapped in paper to the common trash. Wash the saucer and the cup before using them again.

What is the difference between the Exu do Lodo candle and the Exu Caveira candle?

The difference lies in the field of ritual work. Exu Caveira acts in the calunga, in the closing of cycles, and in the cut. Lodo acts on what has stagnated, slowly, moving the depths so that life can flow again. Some houses place both falanges under Omulu, which does not make them the same thing.

Is it normal for things to get worse after lighting the Lodo candle?

Many people who work with this falange report a restlessness before setting up the assentamento, because moving the bottom stirs up what was still. If the sensation is strong or lasts a long time, seek a trusted terreiro for guidance.
