Obaluaê (Omulu)

Lord of health and the earth, the doctor of the Orixás

Obaluaê, also called Omulu, is the Orixá of health and the earth. Doctor of the Orixás, he rules healing, the skin, epidemics, and ancestry. His sacred straw (azê) covers what should only be revealed to a few; his mysteries are the deepest in the pantheon.

Illustration of Obaluaê (Omulu)

Obaluaê was rejected by his mother Nanã (Nana Buruku) at birth because his body was covered in wounds. Iemanjá (Yemoja) adopted him and covered his body with coastal straw, which is why his statue always appears covered. Even though he was rejected, he became the greatest healer of the Orixás, the one who has power over all diseases.
