Candle of Ewá (Yewa)
Intuition, a gaze that sees beyond appearance, and the sacred seclusion (recolhimento) of Ewá
Candle of Ewá
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Few people come to the Ewá candle by chance. Those who look for it are usually suspicious of something they cannot yet name: a partner who smiles too much, a friendship that changed tone, a decision where the head says yes and the heart says wait. The votive candle of Ewá, with the orixá (orisha) label and the colors pink and red, is lit in Candomblé and by devotees seeking clarity of vision.
Ewá, also written as Yewá, is a rare and reserved orixá. Daughter of Nanã (Nana Buruku) in some itãs and of Obatalá in others, she shares with Oxumaré (Oshumare) foundations linked to Dan, the sacred serpent of the Jeje. She rules the dense forest, the hidden spring, and the mist that covers the horizon, and for this reason she is called the lady of clairvoyance. Many houses consecrate Ewá on Saturday and others on Tuesday. The most remembered feast is December 13, the day of Saint Lucy, with whom she was syncretized due to the care for the eyes.
At home, this candle asks for quietude. It reveals no one's secret, does not perform divination, and does not punish those who lied. What it helps with is the person observing with calm, listening to their own hunch, and moving away from where they are not respected, in the discreet way that is Ewá's.
What is it for
What is the purpose of the Ewá Candle
Pink on top and red on the bottom, the Ewá candle wears the colors of the orixá of mystery, daughter of Nanã and sister of Oxumaré. It is lit to sharpen intuition, to perceive falsehood before it hurts, and to keep one's own dignity in silence.
-
Seeing what is behind
When a proposal seems too good to be true or someone changes the subject according to the wind. The candle accompanies a few days of attention for you to notice what previously went unnoticed.
-
Trusting one's own hunch
For those who feel things before they happen and live doubting it. The flame of Ewá helps to calm the mind and to separate intuition from fear, which are different things.
-
Protecting oneself from falsehood and gossip
At work or in the family, when the comment behind your back starts to weigh. The prayer request is for protection and discretion, not for revenge against those who spoke.
-
Keeping dignity and one's own space
Ewá fled to the forest instead of surrendering to what she did not want. It is the candle for those who need to say no, leave a situation that diminishes them, and remain whole.
-
Clarity before a big choice
Moving cities, partnership, marriage, changing jobs. Light it on the eve of deciding and use the burning days to think slowly, away from the rush of others.

Prayer to light
Ewá candle prayer to clear the gaze
“Mother Ewá, mistress of the forest where no one enters and of the water that flows hidden, I light this pink and red light before you. I do not ask to know what does not belong to me. I ask for clear eyes for what is in front of me. Undo the mist that keeps me from seeing who wishes me well and who only approaches out of self-interest. When I feel that something is wrong, give me courage to hear that warning and calm so as not to act in anger. Guard my dignity as you guarded yours, and teach me to withdraw from where I am not respected without losing my sweetness. May this flame burn serenely and may your silence teach me to wait for the right time. Ri Ro Ewá!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Ewá Candle
- 1
Prepare a quiet corner
Ewá likes the secluded. Choose a place in the house with little movement, line it with a clean cloth and keep it away from the television, the front door, and drafts.
- 2
Place the water nearby
The bowl with water reminds her of the hidden river that is hers. Place it next to the plate and scatter a few red rose petals over it, without exaggeration.
- 3
Hold the candle and think of the prayer request
Before lighting, stay for a few moments with the candle between your hands. Think honestly about what you want to see more clearly and in which situation, without accusing anyone.
- 4
Light it and call upon the orixá
Strike the match, light it, and say softly that the candle is for Ewá. Say the prayer and then stay in silence for a while, paying attention to what comes to mind.
- 5
Return every day without moving anything
During the days of burning, pass by the little corner, look at the flame, and renew the prayer request in a few words. Change the water if it becomes cloudy, without moving the candle.
- 6
Finish with respect
Do not blow it out: if needed, smother it with a saucer. When finished, take the water and the petals to the earth of a garden or a pot, and throw the glass and the wax in the trash, wrapped.
Precautions before lighting
- The 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: keep it away from curtains, paper, children, and animals, on a surface that is not flammable.
- Ewá is an orixá of delicate foundation and is little known. Consecrated foundation (assentamento), obrigação, and offering with animal are matters for the zelador of your terreiro.
- The candle does not replace frank conversation or proof. Mistrust requires observation and dialogue, not an accusation made from the flame.
- Whoever lights it for sight, remembering Saint Lucy, does so along with treatment from an ophthalmologist, never in place of them.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Ewá Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
Narrow, high, and still flame
Many houses read this flame as a sign that the prayer request for clarity was accepted. It is time to trust what you already suspected and act with calm.
- Good sign
Clean glass until the end of the burning
In the 7-day candle, the glass that ends up transparent is usually read as an open path, without heavy load crossing the prayer request.
- Attention
Glass darkened on one side only
Some houses understand it as resistance in one part of the situation. Observe more carefully who is on this side of your life and repeat the candle later.
- Attention
Flame that jumps and crackles
It usually indicates agitation around the prayer request, sometimes from the one who lit it. It is worth praying again with more calm and, if it persists, talking in a terreiro.
- Observe
Low and weak flame
First check for a drowned wick and poor quality wax. If the candle is good, read it as a prayer request for patience: the response from Ewá comes slowly.

Rosa Vermelha
Rosa gallica
The petals go in the water next to the candle and in a gentle ritual bath before lighting, bringing the color and delicacy that belong to the orixá.
See the herb -
Anise / Fennel
Pimpinella anisum
A tea or a warm ritual bath of erva-doce before consecrating the candle calms the head and lets intuition speak softer and clearer.

Questions about the Ewá Candle
What is the Ewá candle for?
It serves to ask for intuition, discernment, and protection against falsehood. Ewá is the orixá of clairvoyance and what is hidden, so the candle accompanies moments in which you need to see a person, a proposal, or a decision better, always without promising divination.
What is the best day to light the Ewá candle?
Saturday is the day that Prandi and FUCESP register for Ewá, but houses vary. If you attend a terreiro, follow the day it consecrates. December 13, the feast of Saint Lucy, is also a date widely chosen by devotees.
Can I light an Ewá candle at home without being her daughter?
You can. Lighting a candle with respect and asking for clarity is devotion, not initiation. The foundation that Ewá is initiated only in women, kept by many houses, concerns initiation, not prayer. Men and women can light a candle and pray to her.
What is the difference between the Ewá candle and the Oxumaré one?
The two are siblings and share foundations, but ask for different things. Oxumaré is movement, cycle, and circulating prosperity. Ewá is seclusion and attentive gaze. For change and renewal, Oxumaré. To perceive what is hidden and protect yourself from deceit, Ewá.
Can I blow out the Ewá candle and light it again?
The ideal is to let it burn until the end. If you need to leave the house, smother the flame with a saucer, without blowing, and relight it when you return, renewing the prayer request. In the 7 day candle, this can happen a few times without undoing the firmeza.
What to do with the water and the rest of the candle afterward?
The water and the petals return to nature: garden soil, a plant pot or, if possible, a clean river, which is the domain of Ewá. The glass and the wax go to the common trash, well wrapped. Do not reuse the water for another candle.
