Anise / Fennel

Calm, sweetness and sweetening ritual of situations

Erva-doce is the most down-to-earth of the ritual herbs. Linked to Oxum (Oshun) and Ibeji, it calms children, relieves colic, and is used in baths that sweeten hardened situations.

The foundation of this herb in the terreiro, with the orixá (orisha) that rules it and what changes from house to house, is in Erva-doce: what it is for in baths and in the terreiro.

Ritual Precepts with the Leaf

*"Kó s'ewé, kó s'òrìṣà"*: Without leaf there is no Orixá. Every plant is sacred and requires respect with the axé:

  • ✓ Hot ritual bath of strength: always from the neck down, protecting the ori.
  • ✓ Ask permission from Ossaim and the guardians of the forest before handling or boiling.
  • ✓ Always discard on clean earth, a garden, or a pot. Never in common trash.
The axé of the leaf responds to the intention and the reverence of the heart of the one who prepares it.

Historical Root & Tradition

Erva-Doce / Fennel in Brazilian Ancestral Wisdom

Erva-doce is one of the most present herbs in the Brazilian home, given to a newborn baby and served during any visit. In terreiros, this domesticity became a function: it sweetens what is harsh.

In the traditional garrafadas of Central Brazil, the raizeiro masters recognized in the knotted shape of the root the living metaphor of firmeza: the capacity to tie knots in adversity and remain standing even in arid lands.
