Ewá

Orixá of the springs, of the horizon and of clairvoyance

Ewá (also written as Euá or Yewá) is the orixá (orisha) of the springs, the horizon and clairvoyance, worshipped in Ketu and Jeje candomblé, where she is a vodun. She gives her name to a river between Nigeria and Benin, shares the snake with Oxumarê and, in academic sources, also appears linked to the passage of the dead.

Illustration of Ewá

In an itã gathered by Reginaldo Prandi, Ewá is the daughter of Nanã (Nana Buruku) and is the horizon, pulling the sun with her harpoon at the end of the day. She did not want to marry, and when Nanã insisted, she asked for help from her brother Oxumarê, who hid her in the place where the rainbow ends, behind the horizon. In other itãs she is the daughter of Obatalá, who gives her the kingdom of the dead.

Children of Ewá

Children of Ewá are rare, and the rule that only women can be initiated for her circulates in many houses, but it is contested by ialorixás who claim to have initiated men. There is no personality profile in academic sources: what circulates is terreiro talk.
