Pau ferro has one of the hardest woods in Brazil, so dense that it sinks in water. This hardness gave the tree its ritual function: to set what cannot be knocked down.
In the traditional garrafadas of Central Brazil, the raizeiro masters recognized in the knotted shape of the root the living metaphor of firmeza: the capacity to tie knots in adversity and remain standing even in arid lands.
The wood of pau ferro is so dense that it does not float. In terreiros, this characteristic is read as proof that the tree does not let itself be carried away by anything.
