guiné / Tipi

Powerful protection and breaking of demands

Guiné, also called "amansa-senhor" or "erva-pipi", is one of the most powerful herbs in the Afro-Brazilian tradition. Governed by Ogum (Ogun) and Exu (Eshu), it is used when other herbs are not enough.

The foundation of this herb in the terreiro, with the orixá (orisha) that governs it and what changes from house to house, is in Guiné ritual bath: what it is for, recipes and what to expect.

Ritual Precepts with the Leaf

*"Kó s'ewé, kó s'òrìṣà"*: Without leaf there is no Orixá. Every plant is sacred and requires respect with the axé:

  • ✓ Hot ritual bath of strength: always from the neck down, protecting the ori.
  • ✓ Ask permission from Ossaim and the guardians of the forest before handling or boiling.
  • ✓ Always discard on clean earth, a garden, or a pot. Never in common trash.
The axé of the leaf responds to the intention and the reverence of the heart of the one who prepares it.

Historical Root & Tradition

Guiné / Tipi in Brazilian Ancestral Wisdom

Guiné is one of the most respected herbs in Umbanda and Candomblé for its strength. Its scent is strong and characteristic; you can feel the presence of guiné in the air in any terreiro that is performing a heavy cleansing.

In the traditional garrafadas of Central Brazil, the raizeiro masters recognized in the knotted shape of the root the living metaphor of firmeza: the capacity to tie knots in adversity and remain standing even in arid lands.
