The green and white candle is the one the family lights when someone is recovering. They were discharged, came out of a phase of exhaustion, or are in the middle of a long treatment. Green brings the strength of the healing plant and white places calm around it, so that healing happens without agitation. It appears on the Umbanda congá, in Candomblé houses, and in the oratory of those who pray at home.
The oldest foundation of these two colors together is Ossaim, the orixá (orisha) who guards the secret of the leaves and wears green and white. In Umbanda, the candle also goes to the Caboclos who cross the forest of Oxóssi with the light of Oxalá, such as Caboclo Pena Branca, known for healing and the tranquil passe. Thursday is the most used day, but there are houses that prefer Friday when the prayer request is for peace.
Think of it as a spiritual recovery room: clean air, fresh leaf, and silence. It is not for breaking heavy demanda nor for attracting quick money. What it offers is restoration, and for that reason, it combines with patience, with herbal tea, and with the medicine the doctor prescribed.
What is it for
What is the purpose of the Green and White Candle
Green on top and white on the bottom: the leaf that heals supported by the peace that calms. It is the color of Ossaim, owner of the leaves, and of the line of Caboclos that works between Oxóssi and Oxalá. It serves for convalescence, a confused head, light descarrego, and gratitude.
-
Accompanying someone who is recovering
After a hospitalization, a surgery, or during a long treatment. The candle stays in the family's room and asks for spirit and rest for the body to respond to the care.
-
Clearing a confused head
When thoughts do not stop and no decision seems right. The white calms and the green renews, and the prayer before it helps to separate what is fear from what is intuition.
-
Gentle descarrego without shaking the house
For those who feel the body heavy but do not want a strong cut. With fresh leaves around, the candle cleans slowly, like a herbal bath that is taken without haste.
-
Thanking the Caboclo who took care of you
If a Caboclo prescribed a bath, gave a spiritual pass, or guided you in a gira and improvement came, the green and white candle is the traditional way to return and say thank you.
-
Setting the strength of the leaves before the bath
Many people light the candle while preparing the herbal bath. The flame asks permission from Ossaim, owner of the leaves, so that the herb produces the effect you expect from it.
Who rules this candle
Orixás and spirits of the Green and White Candle
-
Ossaim
Guardian of the secret of the leaves
Ossaim wears green and white and is the one who knows which leaf heals and which leaf causes illness. Without him, no ritual bath and no precept occur, and the candle of his two colors requests that the right herb reaches those in need.
Know Ossaim -
Oxóssi
Hunter and lord of the forest
In Umbanda, green belongs to Oxóssi, and so does Thursday. His line gathers the Caboclos who know the forest inside out and use the leaf in the spiritual pass, which is why the candle reaches him when the prayer request is for health.
Know Oxóssi -
Oxalá
Father of peace and the white cloth
The white of the candle is from Oxalá. He enters to calm the prayer request and gives names to the Caboclos of Oxalá, such as Pena Branca, who bring the calm of the greater father into the healing ritual.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the green and white candle to Ossaim and to the Caboclos
“Pai Ossaim, owner of every leaf that grows on the ground, I light this green and white candle and ask for permission from your forest. Separate for me the herb that heals and remove the one that causes harm. Caboclos of Oxóssi, who walk on the trail without making noise, pass through this house and leave the scent of the woods and the strength of those who never give up. Pai Oxalá, stretch your white cloth over those who are lying down waiting to get better, and give peace to those who care. May the body accept the medicine, may the head rest, and may faith not tire in the middle of the path. I receive this light with gratitude for what has already been healed. Ewé ó! Okê Caboclo!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Green and White Candle
- 1
Open the window and tidy up the corner
Choose an airy place, near a plant or a window. Cover it with the white cloth and place the plate in the middle. The healing candle likes air circulating, not a closed room.
- 2
Ask permission from the leaves
Before picking or using the leaves, say in a low voice that they will serve a healing prayer request. It is the gesture that the terreiros make to Ossaim before touching any herb.
- 3
Set up the circle of leaves
Arrange the leaves around the candle's place, without touching the glass. Place the glass of water beside it. The water receives the tiredness that comes out and the leaves recall the forest of the Caboclos.
- 4
Say the name of the person who will receive
Hold the candle, say the full name of the person for whom you pray and what you wish for them. Then light it with a match, place the candle in the plate and perform the prayer slowly.
- 5
Finish without blowing
Let the candle burn until the end and, if you need to leave, smother it with the lid. Afterwards, the leaves and water go to the soil of a pot or garden, and the leftover wax goes to the trash wrapped up.
Precautions before lighting
- Leaf near a dry flame catches fire. Keep the leaves away from the glass, use a ceramic plate and do not leave the candle where a child or animal can reach it.
- The green and white candle accompanies the treatment and never replaces it. Medicine, exams and return to the doctor always follow the guidance of the person who takes care of health.
- The recipe for a Caboclo ritual bath, the Ossaim leaf in obligation, and the head precept are matters for the leader of your terreiro. At home, the candle is prayer.
- Ask for healing for those who accept being cared for. Do not use the candle to interfere with another person's will or to wish ill upon those you blame for the illness.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Green and White Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
Calm, high flame without smoke
This is the burning expected from a healing candle. Many houses read it as a request accepted and an environment in peace for the recovery to proceed in its own time.
- Good sign
Wax melting evenly in both colors
Green and white descending together are usually read as a balance between strength and calm, a sign that the request is moving in the right way.
- Attention
Flame flickering and making sparks
Some houses understand this as a cleansing happening, a charge being removed from the one who was cited. Pray with more calm and, if it repeats constantly, ask for guidance in a terreiro.
- Attention
Very low flame for consecutive days
It may show exhaustion of the one who requested or of the one who is ill. Rest, take care of yourself too, and renew the candle on the following Thursday, without guilt and without haste.
- Observe
Glass stained with soot
First check the wick and the wind. A long wick or a window hitting it creates soot without any spiritual message. Correct this before seeking any reading.

Questions about the Green and White Candle
Which orixá is the green and white candle for?
Mainly of Ossaim, who wears green and white and guards the secret of the leaves. In Umbanda it is also lit for Oxóssi and for the Caboclos who cross the forest with the line of Oxalá, such as the Caboclo Pena Branca. The reading changes from house to house.
What is the best day to light the green and white candle?
Thursday, which is the day of Oxóssi and, in most houses, of Ossaim. When the request is more for peace than for healing, some people prefer Friday, the day of Oxalá. In case of illness, do not wait for the right day: light it when the need arises.
Can I light the green and white candle for someone who is hospitalized?
You can, and it is one of the most common uses. Say the person's full name and ask for strength for the body and calm for those who care for them. The candle stays at home, never in the hospital, and accompanies the medical treatment without replacing anything.
What is the difference between the green candle and the green and white one?
The green one is more active: Oxóssi hunting, abundance, new beginnings. The green and white brings the peace of Oxalá along and serves better for convalescence, a tired head, and light descarrego. If the prayer request is only for peaceful healing, the bicolor is usually the choice.
Can I blow out the green and white candle in the middle of the week?
The ideal is for it to burn for seven days. If necessary, smother the flame with the lid or a saucer, never by blowing, and light it again as soon as possible. In terreiros, blowing out a prayer candle is considered a lack of respect.
What to do with the leaves and the water after the candle?
Everything from nature returns to it: leaves and water go to the soil of a pot, a garden, or to the foot of a tree. The leftover wax goes into the common trash wrapped in paper, and the glass can be washed and recycled.
Can someone who is not from a terreiro light this candle at home?
You can. It is a prayer and care candle, and the Caboclos receive well those who arrive with respect. What remains for the terreiro is the foundational part, such as the assentamento of Ossaim or a ritual bath prescribed in gira, under the guidance of the terreiro leader.
