Purifies, protects, and renews the energy field
Eucalyptus is one of the most valued herbs in the practices of spiritual cleansing (descarrego) and purification in Umbanda and Candomblé. Governed by Oxalá (Obatala), it brings peace and elevation; in its face of Ogum (Ogun), it cuts and cleans paths with precision and strength. Its unmistakable aroma signals the beginning of a deep cleansing, both physical and spiritual.
The foundation of this herb in the terreiro, with the orixá (orisha) that governs it and what changes from house to house, is in Eucalyptus in Umbanda: the spiritual cleansing herb of Oxalá.
💡 "In the most traditional terreiros, it is common to spread fresh eucalyptus leaves on the floor before the giras, creating an aromatic carpet that purifies the environment and the feet of the participants. It is said that the spirit guides work better when the field is clean, and the aroma of eucalyptus is the first invitation for this cleansing."

Originating from Australia, eucalyptus arrived in Brazil in the 19th century and quickly integrated into the landscape and popular culture. Despite its origin far from the African continent, it was promptly adopted in terreiros for its powerful purifying action, being recognized by the elders as one of the few herbs capable of dissolving miasmas and disinfecting the astral.
In the traditional garrafadas of Central Brazil, the raizeiro masters recognized in the knotted shape of the root the living metaphor of firmeza: the capacity to tie knots in adversity and remain standing even in arid lands.
In the most traditional terreiros, it is common to spread fresh eucalyptus leaves on the floor before the giras, creating an aromatic carpet that purifies the environment and the feet of the participants. It is said that the spirit guides work better when the field is clean and the aroma of eucalyptus is the first invitation for this cleansing.
