The Oxaguiã candle is the Oxalá candle consecrated to those living moments of struggle who need to face them with serenity. The white on top manifests the peace and purity of every funfun orixá (orisha), while the light blue at the base marks the active youth of this warrior quality. It is lit on the congá, on domestic altars, and in the assentamentos (consecrated foundations) of those who have Oxaguiã as their head, supporting those seeking strength to overcome challenges without losing their calm.

In Ketu Candomblé, Oxalá is divided into the forms of Oxalufã, the elder of the staff, and Oxaguiã, the young king of Ejigbô who dances wielding a sword, shield, and pestle hand. Known as the eater of pounded yam, he teaches that sustenance comes from daily and honest work. Friday and white garments apply to both, although many houses also consecrate Thursday to Oxaguiã, expressing the rich diversity of the terreiros.

At home, this candle acts differently from the common Oxalá candle. It does not only ask for quietude: it asks for clean courage, willingness to work, and strength to start over. At the same time, know what it does not do: Oxaguiã does not attend requests for revenge or discord, as the force of Oxalá seeks order and good. Lit with respect, it clears the ori, calms the chest, and gives the necessary impulse to move forward with head held high.

Prayer to light

Candle prayer of Oxaguiã to Pai Oxaguiã

“My father Oxaguiã, young warrior of the pestle and lord of the white shield, I light this candle to place my life under your protection. You who know the labor and transform yam into food through your own effort, give me strength to face the battles of this moment. I ask for your sword to open paths with justice and your serenity to calm my heart. I do not ask for the fall of anyone, but the clean courage of one who starts over without hatred and without fear. I cover my ori with your sacred cloth, so that anger does not rule my actions nor haste guide my steps. May my work bring honest abundance and may I win my struggles with peace and dignity. Epa Babá!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Oxaguiã Candle

  1. 1

    Wear white clothes on Friday

Take a hygiene bath and wear light or white clothes before consecrating. Friday is the most consecrated day to Oxalá, a moment when one seeks seclusion and respect without the use of dendê oil or alcoholic beverages.

  2. 2

Prepare a high and clean location

Choose a high table, a firm shelf, or your domestic altar covered with a clean white cloth. Keep the space well ventilated and away from dark colors or disturbances to maintain the serenity necessary for the prayer environment.

  3. 3

Place the cup of fresh water

Place a cup of clean water next to the saucer with the candle. If it is your custom, also place a small piece of cooked yam without salt on a white saucer, honoring the sacred food of the warrior of the mortar.

  4. 4

Light the candle and make the request

Light the wick with a match, concentrate on the statue of Oxaguiã and say your prayer with sincerity. State clearly what your current struggles are, asking for courage to work, discernment to act, and much peace in your heart.

  5. 5

    Finalize the ritual with respect

Never blow out the flame, using a snuffer if you need to extinguish it. At the end of the burning, wrap the wax remains in paper for the common trash and pour the water in a pot with plants or on the ground, thanking for the blessing achieved.

Precautions before lighting

  • Keep the flame on a resistant plate or candlestick, away from fabrics, curtains, drafts, and out of reach of children and pets.
  • The confirmation of plot, qualities of orixá, and spiritual obligations belongs to the tradition of the house of axé: always consult the zelador or pai de santo of your terreiro.
  • In the precepts dedicated to Oxalá, many branches advise avoiding alcoholic beverages, dendê oil, and arguments in the environment where the candle is lit.
  • The spiritual support provided by prayers and candles acts in the field of faith and emotional balance, never replacing medical or psychological follow-up.
