The Maria Mulambo candle is sought by those who reached rock bottom and need strength to rise again. Dona Maria Mulambo is a falange of Pombagira, worshipped in Umbanda and in Quimbanda, and the name itself tells who she protects: mulambo is rag, that which society throws away. She works precisely with those people, those who were left aside and did not give up.

The most remembered colors of Pombagira are red and black. This candle brings black and purple because it follows the Maria Mulambo of Calunga, the one of the cemetery, which many houses set with purple and bring closer to the line of Obaluaê. Not every house uses this combination, and many set Mulambo with red and black. The day is Monday, of the Pombagiras and the Exus, and the greeting is Laroyê.

Lit at home, she asks for seriousness and an honest request. Mulambo is known for speaking the truth that hurts and for cleansing without hesitation, therefore the best use is to ask for clarity, a new beginning, and the cutting of old weight. She does not bind anyone's will and does not harm third parties. Firmeza with assentamento, delivery in the calunga, or strong cutting ritual work is up to the terreiro.

What is it for

What is the Maria Mulambo Candle for

Black and purple, the Maria Mulambo candle is from the Pombagira who supports those who were humiliated, lost everything, or carry an old burden. The black collects the weight, the purple transforms, and Monday is the day to light it to request a new beginning with dignity.

  • Starting over after losing everything

Bankruptcy, eviction, separation that left the person without ground. The candle accompanies the prayer request for strength to get up and for discernment not to repeat the same fall.

  • Undo old burden

When the feeling is of a weight that comes from afar, from envy or from ritual work done against you. Ask that Mulambo collects what is not yours; if the weight is great, seek a house of axé.

  • Dignity after humiliation

For those who were betrayed, exposed, or treated like trash. Mulambo knows this pain closely, and the prayer request is for self-esteem, head held high, and respect back.

  • Seeing the falsehood up close

Friendship that smiles in front and speaks behind your back, a colleague who pulls the rug. Light it asking for open eyes to recognize who does not want your well-being.

  • Clarity in love that hurts

A relationship that only brings tears, dependence on someone who does not care. The right prayer request is for strength to decide with lucidity, never to force someone to stay or return.

    Dona Maria Mulambo

Pombagira of the forgotten and of life's turn

The candle carries her name and label. Mulambo is a female Exu (Eshu), of a numerous falange (spiritual legion), and welcomes those who suffered rejection and misery. Black and purple accompany her line, which works in the calunga, the cemetery.

  • Illustration of Obaluaê (Omulu) in sacred art

    Obaluaê (Omulu)

Lord of the earth and of the small calunga

Various houses link Maria Mulambo of the Souls and of the Calunga to the vibration of Obaluaê, owner of the cemetery and of Monday. The black of the candle speaks to this connection; purple is the color of the falange itself.

Prayer to light

Prayer of new beginnings to Dona Maria Mulambo

“Dona Maria Mulambo, lady who knew contempt and returned with her head held high, I light this candle asking permission to reach you. I come as I am, without ornament and without lies. You know what it is to fall, to be judged, and to be left alone, and for that reason you understand what I carry today. Remove from my path the weight that is not mine, the bad word they threw against me, and the fear that left me stuck. Give me courage to start over and judgment to see who truly walks with me. I do not ask for anyone's evil, I ask for my dignity back. May this flame burn firm in your strength and may I know how to give thanks when life turns. Laroyê, Dona Maria Mulambo! Mulambo is Mojubá!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Maria Mulambo Candle

  1. 1

Choose a low and private corner

A Pombagira candle does not go up high next to the saint. A corner on the floor or on a low table, away from a child's room and the statue of Oxalá (Obatala), respects the left line.

  2. 2

Take a cleansing bath (banho de descarrego) first

Guiné or arruda from the neck down make the body lighter for the prayer request. Wear clean clothes and arrive with your head on what you want to change, not on someone's anger.

  3. 3

Cover the area and arrange the rose

Spread the cloth, place the saucer with the candle in the center, the water on one side and the open rose on the other. The rose is a gift; the water receives what the burning removes.

  4. 4

Ask for permission and light it

Greet Exu first, then call Dona Maria Mulambo by name. Light it with a match, say the prayer and tell the prayer request with frankness, as if speaking to an older and wiser woman.

  5. 5

    Finish without blowing

Let it burn until the end. If you need to leave, smother the flame with a saucer. Afterwards, the water goes to the earth, the withered rose returns to a garden, and the wax is wrapped and put in the trash.

Precautions before lighting

  • A 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: leave it on a saucer or deep plate, away from cloth, curtains, children, and pets, and never leave it in an unprotected place.
  • Pombagira is not for binding anyone or doing harm to others. A request for revenge or for dominating someone else's will is not a foundation, it is a risk for the one who asks.
  • Assentamento, delivery in the calunga, and strong cutting ritual work are done by those who are initiated. This is up to the leader of your terreiro, not the home candle.
  • Deep sadness, addiction, or a crisis that does not pass require professional help. The candle accompanies this path, but it does not replace a psychologist or a doctor.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Maria Mulambo Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

High and lively flame, with crackling

Many houses read the agitated and firm flame as Pombagira working with gusto, a sign that the cleansing is running. Stay firm in the request.

  • Good sign

Candle that burns evenly until the end

Clean burn, without large leftovers or soot. It is the reading of a path that settles little by little, without rushing, as a new beginning requires.

  • Attention

Black smoke and a lot of soot in the cup

It usually indicates heavy load being burned. Repeat on the following Monday; if it persists, it is worth seeking a serious terreiro for a consultation.

  • Attention

Wax that drips and forms a puddle on one side

Some houses read as a request that still leans to one side, almost always the side of sorrow. Review what you requested and redo the prayer calmly.

  • Observe

Low and weak flame the whole time

Before reading the sign, check the wick, wind, and the quality of the candle. If everything is correct, it may just be the exhaustion of the person who lit it: rest and try another day.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Maria Mulambo Candle

What is the Maria Mulambo candle for?

It serves to request a new beginning after a fall, a cleansing of old energy, and strength to recover dignity. Dona Maria Mulambo welcomes those who were humiliated or lost everything, and the candle accompanies this prayer request with faith and frankness. It does not replace the guidance of a terreiro in heavy cases.

Why is the Maria Mulambo candle black and purple, and not red?

Because it follows the Maria Mulambo of Calunga, the one from the cemetery, whom many houses honor with purple, a color read in Umbanda as transformation. Red and black continue to be the most common colors of Pombagira, and many houses honor Mulambo this way. Both forms are accepted; the one of your terreiro is what matters.

What is the best day and time to light the Maria Mulambo candle?

Monday night, which is the day of the Exus and Pombagiras. Some houses prefer Friday, when Pombagira giras usually happen. The nighttime, after 9 PM, matches the line, but the most important thing is to light it at a moment when you can pray calmly.

Can I light a Maria Mulambo candle at home if I am not from the terreiro?

You can, for a prayer of respect and an honest prayer request, in a low and reserved corner. What stays outside the home is assentamento, delivery at the cemetery, and cutting ritual work: this requires initiation and someone who knows how to open and close what is being handled.

Does Maria Mulambo do ritual work to bring someone back?

That is not her foundation. Maria Mulambo advises those who suffer for love and helps undo what blocked their emotional life, but she respects free will. Anyone who promises to bring the person back in a few days in her name is selling a deception.

What is the difference between the Maria Mulambo candle and the one of Maria Padilha?

The two are pombagiras, but with different ways. Maria Padilha is sought for authority, self-esteem, and business. Maria Mulambo is the one for those who have fallen: a new beginning, heavy cleansing, and dignity after humiliation.

Can I blow out the Maria Mulambo candle before it finishes?

The ideal is to let it burn completely. If you need to leave, smother it with a saucer, without blowing, and relight it when you return. Blowing is seen as undoing the prayer request. The leftover wax will be wrapped for the trash, and the water from the cup goes to the earth.
