Its delicate aroma has the power to open the heart, ward off resentments, and create a field of peace and beauty around the one who uses it.

Jasmine is native to South Asia and the Middle East, and was spread by the Arab and Mediterranean worlds before arriving in Brazil through Portuguese colonization. Its unmistakable perfume was quickly associated with elegance and love in the cultures where it arrived. In Afro-Brazilian terreiros, it was incorporated as the flower of Oxum in the candomblés of Angola and Ketu nations, and its presence in rituals of love and initiation became consolidated over generations.
In the traditional garrafadas of Central Brazil, the raizeiro masters recognized in the knotted shape of the root the living metaphor of firmeza: the capacity to tie knots in adversity and remain standing even in arid lands.
A popular tradition among the daughters of Oxum recommends keeping dried jasmine flowers inside the pillow for revealing dreams and to attract love while sleeping. It is said that Oxum visits her children through dreams, and the aroma of jasmine is the invitation she cannot refuse.
