A bay leaf folded inside the wallet, next to the money. The warm scent that rises when it burns on the charcoal of the year-end smoke cleansing (defumação). The branch that crowned the heads of winners in ancient Greece. The same leaf that thickens Sunday broth crosses Brazilian spirituality as a herb of conquest and prosperity, and this fame has ancient roots.
This guide explains what the bay leaf is used for in Afro-Brazilian religions, which orixá it is linked to, how to use it in ritual bath, smoke cleansing (defumação), and as an amulet, and a warning that almost no one mentions: which is the right bay leaf.
Bay leaf: what is it used for
At the base of everything is an image: the laurel crown. In ancient Greece and Rome, athletes, generals, and poets were crowned with bay branches. From there come the word "laureated" and the expression "reap the laurels of victory." This charge of triumph is the direct bridge to the spiritual use of the leaf.
In Afro-Brazilian religions and in popular folk magic, the bay leaf is read as a herb of victory, magnetism, and prosperity. It is used to:
- Attract prosperity and abundance, especially money and work
- Open paths that are blocked
- Call for victory in causes, tests, and just disputes
- Protect against envy and dense energy, in combination with clove
The starting point is always the same: the herb prepares the field and reinforces the intention. It does not replace the effort of the one who asks. Prosperity, here, is flow and movement, not a guaranteed enrichment.
The right bay leaf: Laurus nobilis and the dangerous confusions
Here lives the care that few texts bring. The bay leaf for seasoning and the leaf for the ritual are the same plant: the Laurus nobilis, also called louro-de-cheiro or loureiro, an aromatic shrub of Mediterranean origin, from the Lauraceae family. What changes between the kitchen and the terreiro is the intention and the preparation, never the species. The botanical profile is well described in the loureiro entry and in the Horto Didático de Plantas Medicinais da UFSC.
The problem is that, in Brazil, the name "louro" also names completely different trees:
- Louro-pardo (Cordia trichotoma): native wood of the Atlantic Forest, from another family (Boraginaceae). It is not a seasoning or a ritual herb.
- Louros da Amazônia (genera Nectandra and Ocotea): various native species called "louro", used as wood.
- Loureiro-cereja (Prunus laurocerasus): an ornamental toxic plant, which contains cyanogenic substances. It should never be confused with the edible bay leaf.
Practical rule: use the dried bay leaf sold as seasoning, which is the Laurus nobilis. Never pick a leaf from an unknown tree just because someone calls it "louro". Doubt in identification is the only truly dangerous error with this herb.
Louro is the herb of which orixá?
The honest answer is: there is no single regency. The distribution of herbs by orixá varies from house to house, and louro appears linked to more than one vibration. This is not a contradiction, it is the legitimate diversity of the religion. The most recurring readings are these:
- Oxalá: is the main association when the focus is prosperity and elevation. Bay leaf enters as a herb of serene and ascending magnetism, aligned with the energy of the father of the orixás. It combines with rosemary, another herb of Oxalá.
- Xangô and Ogum (Ogun): here lies the historical weight of the laurel crown. Xangô, orixá of justice and authority, and Ogum, orixá of victory and overcoming obstacles, receive bay leaf as a herb of conquest. The other herbs that the houses link to Xangô are in herbs of Xangô.
- Oxóssi: due to the connection with the forest, the green, and the abundance of the hunt.
- Iansã (Oya): appears in some Umbanda lists of herbs by orixá.
In Candomblé, every leaf is called ewe and responds to the authority of Ossaim (Osanyin), the orixá owner of the secret of the leaves (the spelling varies by nation; in ketu it is usually written as Ossaim). To be honest: bay leaf is a Mediterranean plant, assimilated over time, and not a leaf from the root Yoruba repertoire. For this reason, it appears stronger in Umbanda and in popular folk charms (simpatias) than in the ancient foundation of Candomblé.
How to use bay leaf
The ritual uses of bay leaf are simple and, in external format, safe. See the main ones.
The leaf in the wallet
The most sought after use. Keep a dry, whole, and beautiful bay leaf inside your wallet, along with your money and cards. While keeping it, visualize prosperity and financial movement. Replace the leaf on New Year or when it breaks on its own. A variation of the turn: on the afternoon of December 31, write your name and the word "prosperity" on the back of the leaf and carry it for the entire year.
Prosperity smoke cleansing (defumação)
Burn the dry bay leaf on the charcoal of the incense burner or on a clay plate, combined with cloves, cinnamon sticks and coffee powder. Smoke cleanse from the door inward, calling prosperity to the environment. To clean before attracting, start from the back toward the door. Then, ventilate the room. If you want to deepen the technique, see the guide on how to do smoke cleansing for cleaning.
Path-opening ritual bath
Boil one liter of water, turn off the heat and cover a handful of bay leaves for ten minutes. Strain and wait to cool down. After a common hygiene bath, pour the infusion from the neck down, asking for the opening of paths. Bay leaf combines well with basil or rosemary in this preparation. It is for external use. For a complete recipe, see the bath to open paths.
Golden rule: the ritual opens the path, but the one who walks is you. No leaf brings guaranteed money. Bay prepares the field and firms the intention; the conquest comes from the gesture added to the action.
Care and contraindications
The ritual external use (bath, smoke cleansing, leaf in the wallet) is safe for almost everyone. The precautions apply to internal use (tea) and, especially, to the concentrated essential oil. The contraindications below follow the Horto Didático da UFSC:
- Pregnant women: avoid internal use and essential oil, because bay in doses is cited as a stimulant of contractions. In case of doubt, talk with the pai or mãe de santo and with a doctor.
- Nursing mothers and children under 6 years old: avoid internal use.
- Gastritis, ulcer, colitis or liver problems: avoid the tea, which can irritate the mucosa.
- Bay essential oil: is potent. Never ingest, and always dilute on the skin.
- Whole leaf: never swallow. The leaf is hard and has sharp edges, and it can injure the digestive tract. In the kitchen, it is removed before serving. In the ritual, the leaf is not ingested.
Frequently asked questions
What is bay leaf for?
In Afro-Brazilian religions and in popular folk magic, the bay leaf serves to attract prosperity, open blocked paths, call for victory in just causes, and protect against envy. The fame comes from the laurel crown of Antiquity, a symbol of triumph. It is used in ritual bath, smoke cleansing (defumação), and as an amulet in the wallet.
Louro is the herb of which orixá?
There is no single regency, and it varies from house to house. The most common association for prosperity is with Oxalá. Bay also appears linked to Xangô and Ogum (for victory), Oxóssi (for the forest) and, in some Umbanda lists, Iansã. In Candomblé, every leaf is ewe and responds to Ossaim.
Can I keep a bay leaf in my wallet?
Yes, it is one of the best-known prosperity folk magics in Brazil. Keep a dry and whole leaf together with the money and exchange it on New Year or when it breaks. Treat the gesture as a daily reminder of your intention to prosper, not as a promise of certain money.
What is the difference between kitchen bay and Umbanda bay?
It is the same plant, the Laurus nobilis. There is no "Umbanda bay" of another species. What changes is the intention and the ritual preparation. The real care is not to confuse edible bay with native trees called "louro", nor with the cherry laurel, which is toxic.
How to do smoke cleansing (defumação) with bay?
Burn the dry leaf on charcoal, along with cloves, cinnamon, and coffee powder. Smoke the environment from the door inward to attract prosperity and then ventilate. It is an attraction smoke cleansing very used in commerce and on New Year's Eve.
