Dark Green Candle (Mata Fechada)
The strength of the mata fechada of Oxóssi (Oshosi), Ossain, and the Caboclos for healing, resilience, and protection
Dark Green Candle (Mata Fechada)
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Those seeking the dark green candle have generally moved past the phase of a light request. It is called the mata fechada candle because it brings the tone of the oldest leaves, those that remain in the heart of the forest, far from the trail. In Umbanda and in many houses of Candomblé, it appears when the subject is recovery, protection that needs roots, and reconnecting with one's own strength.
The foundation comes from Oxóssi, the hunter who knows every corner of the forest, and from the Caboclos who work in his line. Thursday is the most cited day. In Candomblé, the dark green reminds one of Ossaim (Osanyin), who guards the secret of the leaves and healing and wears green and white, with the tone changing from nation to nation. There are also houses of Umbanda that give the green to Ogum (Ogun). Houses diverge, and it is worth asking how it is in yours.
Inside the house, it asks for more withdrawal and quiet than the common green. It is a candle to light slowly, near plants or a pot with soil, and to let work for days. It does not cut demanda with violence nor bring quick money: its work is to strengthen from within, like the forest that grows without haste.
What is it for
What is the Dark Green Candle (Mata Fechada) for?
Dark green is the color of the forest where light barely enters. In Umbanda it belongs to Oxóssi and the Caboclos, and in Candomblé many houses link it to Ossain, owner of the leaves. It serves for requests of recovery, deep protection, and spiritual strength.
-
Strength for those who are recovering
Lit by someone in convalescence or in long-term treatment, it asks the healer Caboclos to sustain the body and the spirit while the doctor takes care of his part.
-
Protection that takes root
When the feeling is of being exposed, with the house open to any energy, the closed forest works like a living fence: it closes the surroundings without harming anyone.
-
To honor the Caboclos of the forest
It is the candle that many médiuns light for the Caboclos line, especially those who work with leaf and healing. It helps to strengthen the current before a gira or a passe.
-
To leave exhaustion and distraction
For phases when the head is always full and the body is always empty. The deep green invites you to slow down, return to the ground, and recover focus little by little.
-
To ask permission from the leaves
Before preparing a ritual bath, a smoke cleansing, or taking care of the house plants, the dark green candle greets Ossain and asks that the leaf arrives with full axé.
Who rules this candle
Orixás and spirits of the Dark Green Candle (Closed Forest)
-
Oxóssi
Hunter of a single arrow, king of Ketu
Oxóssi is the owner of the forest and has Thursday as his day. The lightest green speaks of his abundance; the dark green speaks of the virgin forest where he hunts and protects, therefore the closed forest candle follows his axé.
Know Oxóssi -
Ossain
Lord of the leaves and the secret of healing
Without leaf there is no axé, and the leaf belongs to Ossain. He wears green and white, and the shade of green changes according to the nation. The closed green reminds one of the heart of the forest where he lives and knows which herb awakens each healing.
Knowing Ossain -
Caboclo Sete Flechas
Head of the spiritual legion (falange) in the line of Oxóssi
One of the most well-known Caboclos of Umbanda, he works in the vibration of Oxóssi with protection and healing. He receives the dark green candle in forest firmezas and in requests for strength to move forward.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the dark green candle to Oxóssi and to the Caboclos of the forest
“Pai Oxóssi, hunter who never misses the target, I light this candle the color of your deepest forest. Enter with me where I cannot see and ward off what tires me without me noticing. Pai Ossaim, owner of the leaves, awaken in me the strength I thought I had lost. Caboclos of the forest, who know the remedy of each root, stay by the side of those I love and those who are recovering. May this house be surrounded by your green, firm as an ancient trunk. I do not ask for haste, I ask for root. Receive this light and walk with me until the end of the trail. Okê Arô! Okê Caboclo!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Dark Green Candle (Mata Fechada)
- 1
Prepare a corner with greenery
Choose a place near plants, a window, or the congá, away from drafts. The forest candle likes a living environment, never a stuffy and dirty corner.
- 2
Line the plate with leaves
Make a circle of fresh leaves on the plate, leaving the center free for the candle. The leaves recall the dense forest and carry the axé of Ossaim to the flame.
- 3
Hold the candle and state the reason
With the candle between your hands, speak in a low voice to whom it is intended and what the prayer request is. If it is for another person, say their full name. Only then place the candle in the center.
- 4
Light it while greeting the forest
Light it with a match and greet Oxóssi and the Caboclos with Okê Arô. Place the glass of water nearby, say the prayer, and stay in silence for a few minutes before leaving.
- 5
Finish by returning to the earth
Do not blow it out. Once finished, the leaves and water go to the soil of a garden or pot, and the remaining wax, wrapped in paper, goes to the common trash.
Precautions before lighting
- The 7-day candle stays lit for a long time. Use a plate that does not heat up too much, keep it away from dry leaf, curtains, and out of reach of children and animals.
- In a health request, the candle accompanies the treatment and never replaces it. Always follow the doctor's guidance and do not stop medication on your own.
- The consecrated foundation (assentamento) of Oxóssi or Ossain, the leaf of an initiate, and the obrigação are the foundation of the terreiro. For this, the one who provides guidance is the zelador of your house.
- Pick a leaf asking for permission and without uprooting the entire plant. The strength of the forest comes from respect for it, and this is also part of what makes the ritual strong.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Dark Green Candle (Mata Fechada) shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
Firm, high flame without smoke
Many houses read this as a sign that the forest accepted the request. The candle is burning calmly, which is the rhythm of those who work with roots.
- Good sign
Glass cup clean to the end
In the 7-day candle, the glass that ends clear is usually read as a complete burn, with nothing heavy stuck in the path.
- Attention
Glass darkened by soot
It may indicate energy being burned in the environment. Wash the location, take a ritual bath of leaves and, if it happens again, speak with a trusted terreiro.
- Attention
Low flame that almost disappears
Sometimes it is just a weak wick or damp wax. Check this first; if everything is correct, redo the prayer with more calm and light another candle later.
- Observe
Short pops from time to time
They usually come from moisture in the wick. Some houses read them as movement of the Caboclos nearby. Observe without being scared and let the candle continue.
Ritual bath and smoke cleansing (defumação)
Herbs that combine with the Dark Green Candle (Mata Fechada)
-
guiné / Tipi
Petiveria alliacea
Strong protection leaf. A branch on the plate or a guinea hen weed ritual bath from the neck down before lighting reinforces the fence that the candle will raise.
See the herb -
Pepper tree (aroeira)
Schinus terebinthifolius
Strong spiritual cleansing herb. A branch around the candle helps push away what is heavy. If you are going to use it in a ritual bath, test it on the skin first, because it causes allergies in many people.
See the herb -
Jurema
Mimosa tenuiflora
Sacred tree of the Caboclo and of the Cabocla Jurema. A branch next to the candle calls the forest line close to the request for healing and strength.
See the herb -
Alfavaca
Ocimum gratissimum
Herb linked to Oxóssi, with a sweet scent. Good for a gentle ritual bath after the ritual, when the body asks for lightness instead of spiritual cleansing.

Questions about the Dark Green Candle (Mata Fechada)
What is the difference between the dark green candle and the common green candle?
The common green speaks of abundance, luck, and the paths of Oxóssi. The dark green goes to the heart of the forest: it is used in requests for recovery, protection that needs roots, and the strength of the healer Caboclos. One does not cancel the other, only the focus changes.
What is the best day to light the dark green candle?
Thursday, which is the day of Oxóssi and the Caboclos in most houses. Those who follow the reading of Ogum for this tone may prefer Tuesday. In an urgent health request, there is no need to wait for the right day to light it.
Can I light a dark green candle for another sick person?
You can. Say the person's full name when lighting it and, if possible, ask for their permission beforehand. The candle asks for strength and support from the Caboclos, but it does not replace treatment: it walks alongside the doctor, never in their place.
Can I blow out the 7-day candle and light it again?
It is best not to blow it out. If the candle needs to be interrupted for safety, smother it with a saucer, without blowing, and relight it as soon as possible, repeating the greeting. Many houses understand blowing as undoing the prayer request.
What to do with the leaves and the leftover wax from the candle?
The leaves and water return to the earth, in a garden, flowerbed, or large pot. The glass cup can be washed and recycled. The remaining wax goes wrapped in paper for common trash, without reusing it in another ritual.
Is the dark green candle only for Oxóssi or also for Ogum?
In most houses, it is for Oxóssi and the Caboclos of the forest. There are Umbanda houses that dress Ogum in green and light this shade for him on Tuesday, and in Candomblé, green also recalls Ossaim. In obrigação, follow the color of your house.
