Saint Michael Archangel candle
Defense of the house, justice and protection of the souls, with the prince of the celestial militia
Saint Michael Archangel candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
The Saint Michael Archangel candle is the candle of defense. It is lit when the house seems surrounded, when someone suffers an injustice, or when the family has lost a relative and wants them to be well guided. The archangel appears in armor, with a sword in one hand and the scales in the other, defeating the dragon of the Apocalypse. Here, the candle has the dark blue of the mantle and the night sky.
Michael means Who is like God, a question that answers pride with humility. In the Catholic tradition, he defends, weighs the souls in judgment, and leads them after death. The feast is September 29, together with Gabriel and Raphael. Unlike Saint George, he does not have a fixed orixá (orisha): there are houses that bring him close to Ogum (Ogun) because of the sword, others to Xangô (Shango) because of the scales, and many receive him as an archangel as such.
At home, this candle asks for little and protects much. It does not attack anyone, it guards. The dragon in the image is a figure from the Bible, it has nothing to do with Exu (Eshu) or any spirit of terreiro. The strength of the candle is of a shield, of a just scale, and of company for the souls that need light.
What is it for
What is the Saint Michael Archangel Candle for
The dark blue candle of Saint Michael Archangel is that of the prince of the celestial militia, who defends and weighs with justice. It is lit to protect the house, to ask for steadfastness in an unjust situation, to care for the souls, and to ward off what hinders the family's peace.
-
Protect the house and the family
For a house that lives in conflict, with heavy visitors, or with the feeling of being surrounded. The candle of Saint Michael stays near the door and asks that nothing bad crosses through.
-
Justice in an unjust situation
The archangel's scale is the forgotten side of devotion. Light it when you are being accused without reason, persecuted at work, or waiting for a decision that carries weight.
-
Light for the souls that have departed
Michael is the conductor of the souls in the Catholic tradition. Light it for the person who passed away, asking that they be well received and that the family finds comfort.
-
Strength to overcome fear
For those who walk with fear at night, have nightmares, or feel weak before a big problem. The blue flame helps to pray with firmness and to sleep more peacefully.
-
Discernment to not be deceived
Before signing a contract or trusting someone new, the candle asks for open eyes. Who is like God? is also a reminder not to be carried away by false promises.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the candle of Saint Michael Archangel for the house
“Saint Michael Archangel, who asked who is like God and stood firm when others fell, I light this blue candle and place my house under your sword. Guard the door, the windows, and the sleep of those who sleep here. Weigh in your scale what they accuse me of and show the truth to those who need to see it. Receive the souls of my loved ones who have already departed and lead each one to the light. I do not ask for the fall of anyone, I ask that no evil finds an open path to us. Stay on guard this night and all others. Long live Saint Michael Archangel!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Candle of Saint Michael Archangel
- 1
Consecrate the candle near the entrance
For protection, the place is near the main door, on a high and secure shelf. For the souls, an oratory or a quiet corner of the house, away from where food is eaten.
- 2
Prepare the water with salt
A glass of water with a pinch of coarse salt next to the candle receives the weight that the flame is cutting. It is a simple custom of cleansing, without any secret foundation.
- 3
Say what needs to be defended
Hold the candle and say in a low voice what you want to protect: the house, a person, a process, someone's soul. Ask for defense, never for attack.
- 4
Light and pray with firmness
Light with a match and pray the prayer on this page or the traditional prayer of Saint Michael, which is in the public domain. Finish with an Our Father if it is your custom.
- 5
Pour out the water at the end
Do not blow out the candle. When it finishes, throw the salt water into the drain, outside the house if possible, and wash the cup. The leftover wax goes into the trash wrapped in paper.
Precautions before lighting
- A 7-day candle near the door needs firm support and distance from curtains, rugs, and where children and animals pass. Never leave it without anyone at home.
- The dragon on the statue of Saint Michael is a figure from the Bible. Do not use the devotion to call Exu or terreiro spirits demons: that is prejudice, not faith.
- For heavy spiritual cleansing (descarrego) or to consecrate archangels inside a terreiro, the one who guides you is the head of your house (zelador). The house candle is for protection, not for undoing a demanda.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Saint Michael Archangel Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High and bluish flame at the base
Many devotees read it as firm protection over the house. A steady and clean flame is what is expected from a protection candle in a place without wind.
- Good sign
Straight flame that does not move
Some read it as a peaceful environment and a prayer request well received. Continue the prayer in the following days, without needing to change anything.
- Attention
Black smoke and dark glass
It is usually read as a great weight being cut. Change the salt water, clean the house and, if the sign returns constantly, seek guidance in a serious terreiro.
- Attention
Flame that leans toward the door
It could just be a draft. Some houses read it as something wanting to enter and being blocked. Close the door, reinforce the prayer and observe without fear.
- Observe
Candle that goes out and relights
First check the wick and the wind. If it relights well, continue the prayer normally. There is no reason for fear: check the candle and continue.

Questions about the Candle of Saint Michael Archangel
What is the Saint Michael Archangel candle for?
It serves to protect the house and the family, to ask for justice in an unfair situation, to pray for the souls that have departed, and to gain steadfastness against fear. It is a candle of defense and of balance, not for attacking anyone.
What is the color of the Saint Michael Archangel candle?
The Church does not define an official color. Popular use varies between blue, red, and gold. This candle has the dark blue of the mantle and the night sky, which is widely used for protection. If your house uses another color, follow the guidance from there.
What is the day to light the Saint Michael candle?
It varies. Many people light it on Monday, the day of the souls, because the archangel is their conductor; others prefer Sunday. The feast is September 29, and the Lenten season of Saint Michael goes from August 15 until that date.
Which orixá is Saint Michael Archangel?
There is no fixed orixá. Some houses associate him with Ogum because of the sword, others with Xangô because of the scales of justice, and many receive him as an archangel, without syncretism. Unlike Saint George, this bridge never consolidated in Brazil.
Can I light the Saint Michael candle for someone who died?
You can, and it is an old custom. In the Catholic tradition, Michael leads the souls after death. Light it saying the person's name, ask that they be well received and that the family find comfort. Monday is the most used day.
Can I blow out the Saint Michael candle and light it later?
In case of necessity, yes. Never blow it out: cover the flame with a saucer or a lid and light it again with a match upon returning. A protection candle at the door should not stay lit with the house empty, so it is best to let it finish while there are people at home.
