The Pai Francisco candle is the candle for those who arrive home with aching backs and still have bills to pay. It brings the label of this Preto Velho and the colors of the line: black, which absorbs fatigue and the evil eye, and white, which returns peace. It is lit on the home congá, in the Almas corner of the terreiro, and near the door of those who leave early and return late.

Pai Francisco is one of the most common names among the Pretos Velhos, and many houses call him Pai Francisco de Aruanda. Aruanda is the spiritual home of the spirit guides, not an African country. Some read the "de Aruanda" as a sign that he works in the vibration of Oxalá (Obatala); other houses place the entire line under the Almas of Obaluaê. In all of them, Monday is the day of Preto Velho, and sugarless coffee is a sure way to please him.

This candle does not find a job on its own nor does it make the boss change their mind. It works from the inside: it removes the weight you have accumulated, helps the body rest at night, and firms up the disposition to continue. Preto Velho knows the daily grind better than anyone, and that is why the prayer request of those who work reaches him.

What is it for

What is the Pai Francisco Candle for

The Pai Francisco candle is black on top and white on the bottom, the colors of the Pretos Velhos line. It is lit by those who are in a phase of heavy work and ask for endurance, spiritual cleansing (descarrego) of the tired body, and protection for the family that depends on them.

  • Enduring a phase of heavy work

Extra hours, two jobs, home renovation, harvest. Light it at the beginning of the week and ask Pai Francisco for physical endurance and a cool head so you do not fight with those who work beside you.

  • To remove the fatigue that sticks to the body

For the weight that does not leave even after sleeping. With a ritual bath of guiné and the candle lit at night, the spiritual cleansing (descarrego) comes slowly, in the gentle way that the Pretos Velhos work.

  • Protection for those who support the household

When the whole family depends on your salary and the fear of failing takes away your sleep. The candle asks for support for you and firmeza for the house while the difficult phase does not pass.

  • To ward off the evil eye at work

For a work environment charged with envy and gossip. Ask Pai Francisco that whatever bad comes does not stick to you, without wishing ill on those who sent it.

  • To persevere without losing honesty

At the moment when the wrong shortcut seems tempting. Preto Velho teaches that the straight path is slower and safer. The candle reminds you of this on days when haste presses.

    Pai Francisco

Preto Velho of the labor, from Aruanda

The candle carries his label and the prayer request follows in his name. In the gira, Pai Francisco speaks calmly, blesses with a leaf branch and reminds that every burden becomes lighter when it is shared. It is this help that the candle calls.

  • Illustration of Oxalá in sacred art

    Oxalá

Great Father of peace, linked to Aruanda

Some houses associate the name "of Aruanda" with the vibration of Oxalá, father of peace and charity. The white at the base of the candle is his part, the rest that comes after the effort.

    Obaluaê

Other terreiros set all Pretos Velhos in the line of the souls, of Obaluaê. The black at the top of the candle is his earth, which receives the fatigue and transforms it. Houses diverge on this regency.

Prayer to light

Candle prayer of Pai Francisco for those who work hard

“Adorei as Almas! My Pai Francisco de Aruanda, I light this candle at the end of another day of toil. You know what it is to work from sunup to sundown, and that is why I come to you and not to another. Look at my hands and my back. Take from me the fatigue I brought from the street and the evil eye of those who do not want to see me grow. Give me strength to get up tomorrow and wisdom not to trade the right for the easy. Protect my house and those who eat from my bread. Receive this bitter coffee, which is the offering of one who has little and gives from the heart. May I work with dignity and sleep in peace. Adorei as Almas!”

Step by step

How to set the Candle of Pai Francisco

  1. 1

Take the guiné ritual bath first

When you arrive from work, take a guiné ritual bath from the neck down. It removes the street's energy before you sit before the candle, and the prayer request comes out cleaner.

  2. 2

Set up the corner near the floor

A saucer on a small stool or at the foot of the congá, the coffee mug on one side, the water glass on the other. If you use tobacco leaf, leave a piece next to it as an offering to the old one.

  3. 3

Say what is the work that weighs on you

Hold the candle and speak of your work situation, with name and detail. Pai Francisco understands a concrete prayer request better than a list of loose desires.

  4. 4

    Light and pray calmly

Light with a match and say the prayer. Then stay still for a few minutes, breathing deeply. It is in this pause that the body begins to release the weight it brought from the street.

  5. 5

    End the week without blowing

Let the candle finish on its own. The coffee and water go to the earth, the tobacco leaf can be buried in a pot, and the leftover wax will be wrapped in paper for the common trash.

Precautions before lighting

  • 7-day candle burns all night long: leave it on a deep saucer, away from curtains and pets, and never near a gas cylinder or dishcloth.
  • Ask for strength for your work, never for harm to a colleague or boss. Preto Velho is a line of charity and does not accept requests for harm to anyone.
  • Strong spiritual cleansing (descarrego), consultation, and spiritual pass are with Pai Francisco on earth, in the gira, under the leader of the terreiro. The candle at home supports; it does not replace this.
  • Back pain, exhaustion, and insomnia that do not pass require a doctor. The candle accompanies health care, it never takes the place of treatment.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Pai Francisco Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

Firm flame from beginning to end

Many houses read this as strength arriving little by little and a request accepted. It is what is expected from a resistance candle: constancy, without jumps or scares.

  • Good sign

    Clean glass after seven days

When the candle ends without soot, the common reading is of a completed spiritual cleansing (descarrego). Give thanks with another coffee and maintain the herbal bath once a week.

  • Attention

Thick soot rising through the glass

Usually indicates heavy load being burned, sometimes from the work environment itself. Repeat the guinea hen weed bath and, if it persists, seek guidance from a terreiro.

  • Observe

Flame that doubles to one side

Most of the time it is a draft of air or a crooked wick. Protect the candle from the wind and straighten the wick carefully before looking for any sign.

  • Attention

    Wick that drowns in wax

Some houses read this as too much fatigue for a single prayer request. Rest, redo the prayer with a smaller request and light another candle next Monday.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Candle of Pai Francisco

What is the Candle of Pai Francisco for?

It is the candle for someone who is in a phase of very heavy work and asks for resistance, spiritual cleansing of fatigue, and protection for the family. It also helps to ward off the evil eye at work. It does not arrange a job or change the boss's will: it steadies you to get through the phase.

Are Pai Francisco and Pai Francisco de Aruanda the same Preto Velho?

In practice, yes: they are the same spiritual legion (falange), and the "de Aruanda" indicates the spiritual dwelling of the spirit guides, not a place in Africa. As each terreiro has its own Pai Francisco, the style and the ponto (sacred song) change from house to house. The candle serves all of them.

Does Pai Francisco da Umbanda have anything to do with bumba meu boi?

No. Pai Francisco is also a character in bumba meu boi and the name of a popular song, but they are folklore figures, with no relation to the Preto Velho of Umbanda. The coincidence comes from Francisco being a very common Christian name in Brazil.

What is the best day to light Pai Francisco's candle?

Monday, the day of the Pretos Velhos and the souls. Since it is a candle for work, many people light it right at the beginning of the week, upon returning from work. May 13 is the feast day of the line in many terreiros.

What to do with the coffee, the tobacco leaf, and the leftover wax?

The coffee and water go into the soil of a pot or the backyard. The tobacco leaf can be buried in the same pot. The remaining wax will be wrapped in paper for the common trash, and the mug is washed and returned to household use.

Can I light Pai Francisco's candle at my workplace?

It is not the most recommended. A 7-day candle needs someone nearby and a safe place, and work rarely offers that. Light it at home and, if you wish, take a sprig of arruda or guiné to work.
