Exu (Eshu) Sete Catacumbas candle
The guardian who patrols the catacombs, to overcome spells and protect mediums
Exu Sete Catacumbas candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
The Exu Sete Catacumbas candle is sought by those who suspect ritual work done and buried against them, or by a medium who feels their mediumship under attack. Catacumba is the grave of the cemetery, and the anthropologist Vagner Gonçalves da Silva shows that names like this speak of the point of passage between the living and the dead. Sete Catacumbas is a guardian of this limit, worshipped in Umbanda and in Quimbanda.
The pontos of a house in Curitiba say who he is: he comes from the calunga, defeats the spellcaster, he is the one who does it and does not order it to be done, and in the name there is seven, seven demandas to overcome. Another ponto warns that they say he is a lost spirit wandering the tombs, but that in truth he is not: he is Seu Sete Catacumbas. In Vitória (ES), a study recorded an Umbanda practitioner with Exu Tranca Rua das 7 Catacumbas who takes the offering to the seventh catacumba after the gate.
Many houses place this guardian among the people of Omulu, the lord of the cemeteries; others trace his lineage differently. At home, the candle asks for strength against a spell and protection for your path, without calling anyone from the cemetery. It is not for returning a spell with an address: the cut is in the earth, not in the person.
What is it for
What is the Exu Sete Catacumbas Candle for
Black on top and red on the bottom, the candle of Exu Sete Catacumbas is of the guardian whom the pontos (sacred songs) call the conqueror of sorcerers. It is lit to undo buried ritual work, face several demands at once, and protect mediums from spiritual attacks.
-
Overcome a spell cast against you
When there is a clear sign of sent ritual work: everything going wrong at once, unexplained illness in the family, a house that does not calm down. The candle asks that the winner of the sorcerer undo it.
-
Undo buried ritual work
The ponto (sacred song) sings that he opens the tomb and comes out. The candle asks that what was buried against you be opened, undone, and returned to the earth without harming anyone.
-
Protect mediumship
For the medium who feels heavy after the gira, bad dreams, or attacks when they are open. The candle asks for protection for those who work with the spiritual world, alongside what the terreiro already does.
-
Several demands at the same time
Work, family, and health stalling together. In his name there is seven, seven battles (demandas) to overcome, and the candle asks that each front be faced one at a time.
-
Discover who is working against you
For those who feel someone's hand behind the problems. The candle does not point out a culprit, but it usually clears the situation and provides firmeza to distance oneself from those who do harm.

Exu Sete Catacumbas
Guardian of the catacombs, conqueror of sorcerers
The label is his. The pontos describe him coming from the calunga to defeat the spellcaster and seven demands. The black and red candle carries the most cited colors for him, between the darkness of the grave and the movement of Exu.
-
Obaluaê (Omulu)
Lord of the cemeteries
In Umbandista literature, Sete Catacumbas appears in the group of Exus linked to Omulu, owner of the land and the cemetery. Not every house makes this connection, and the orixá (orisha) is not an Exu.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the Exu Sete Catacumbas candle against a spell
“Lord Exu Sete Catacumbas, who comes from the calunga and does not fear the spellcaster, I ask permission from Exu and light this candle for you. If they buried anything against me, open the tomb, undo it and return to the earth what is not mine. The demands that surround me, you who have seven in your name, defeat one by one. Guard my mediumship, my house and those I love. I do not ask that evil returns to anyone with name and address, I ask that it ends. I fulfill what I promise and return to give thanks. Laroyê, Exu Sete Catacumbas!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to set the Exu Sete Catacumbas Candle
- 1
Take the spiritual cleansing (descarrego) first
Whoever suspects a spell begins by cleansing the body. A ritual bath of rue or pepper tree from the neck down before lighting helps the candle to work on what matters.
- 2
Ask permission from Exu and the calunga
Say Laroyê and hail the people of the calunga. The guardian comes from there, and permission from the people of the cemetery is part of the respect for those who work in this field.
- 3
Set it outside the bedroom
Backyard, service area, or near the door, on the ground or on a low base. Never at the head of the bed or near the altar of the orixás, who do not receive a candle from the left.
- 4
State the demands one by one
Hold the candle and name each area that is blocked: work, home, health, family. Then light it with a match, serve the marafo, and say the prayer calmly.
- 5
Close without blowing
Let the candle burn until the end. The marafo goes to the ground and the peppers, if used, go wrapped in the trash along with the wax, outside the house and away from the door.
Precautions before lighting
- A candle from the left lit at night requires a firm base, nothing flammable nearby, and no one sleeping with it without supervision. Children and animals stay away.
- Do not light it to return a spell to whoever you think sent it. The guardian cuts and undoes; sending evil back with a name is not a serious foundation.
- Suspicion of a serious spell and attacks on mediumship are matters for the zelador of your terreiro. The candle at home helps, but it does not replace the house of the orixás (casa de santo).
- Illness without explanation requires a doctor before any other reading. The candle accompanies the treatment and never replaces the doctor.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Vela de Exu Sete Catacumbas shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High and lively flame from the beginning
Many houses read it as a guardian arriving and a request accepted. It matches the fame of someone who defeats a spellcaster without asking permission for the spell.
- Observe
Flame that divides into two
First check the wick, which may have opened. Once that is ruled out, the popular reading is of two fronts being worked on at the same time.
- Attention
Black smoke and strong smell
It usually indicates heavy ritual work being undone. Keep the house ventilated and, if the sign repeats in other candles, seek a terreiro.
- Attention
Candle that goes out by itself in the middle
Check wind and wick before anything else. Then greet Exu again, relight and repeat the request; if it continues, speak with a zelador.
- Good sign
Wax running in seven strands
Some houses read the wax descending in several strands as demands yielding. It is not a rule, but it usually accompanies a complete burn.
Ritual bath and smoke cleansing (defumação)
Herbs that combine with the Vela de Exu Sete Catacumbas
-
Rue
Ruta graveolens
Cutting herb of the povo de rua. The ritual bath of arruda before lighting removes the first layer of the spell and leaves the body ready for the candle ritual.
See the herb -
Pepper tree (aroeira)
Schinus terebinthifolius
Strong plant for defense and cleansing. The dry leaf in the smoke cleansing, with an open window, accompanies the candle when there is a sign of buried ritual work.
See the herb -
Sete Pimentas
Mixture of Capsicum and Piper species
Some houses leave seven peppers on the guardian's saucer, one for each demanda. It stays only on the saucer: never in the ritual bath or on the skin.

Questions about the Exu Sete Catacumbas Candle
Who is Exu Sete Catacumbas?
He is a cemetery guardian worshipped in Umbanda and in Quimbanda. The pontos (sacred songs) say he comes from the calunga, defeats sorcerers, and has seven struggles (demandas) to overcome. Catacumba is the grave, and the name speaks of those who work in the passage between the living and the dead.
Is Exu Sete Catacumbas the same as Pombagira Sete Catacumbas?
No. They are different spirits that share the name of the same field. Pombagira Sete Catacumbas has her own ponto (sacred song), offering, and candle, with roses and perfume. This candle is for the male guardian, for breaking spells and protection.
What is the color of the Exu Sete Catacumbas candle?
Black and red is the most cited combination, and some houses use only the black candle. Black speaks of the work in the grave and red of the movement of Exu. Follow what your terreiro instructs.
What is the best day to light the Sete Catacumbas candle?
Monday, the day of the povo de rua and the souls, at night. Many houses prefer the great hour, near midnight. If urgency calls for another day, salute Exu first and light it with respect.
Can I light the Exu Sete Catacumbas candle inside the house?
Inside the bedroom, no. The candle of the guardian of the catacumbas stays in the backyard or near the front door, away from the altar of the orixás. In an apartment, the service area works, always with a firm base and away from curtains.
Is Exu Sete Catacumbas a lost spirit from the cemetery?
No. The ponto itself answers: they say he is a lost spirit that roams the tombs, but in reality, he is not. He is a guardian, he works in the calunga with order and with permission, and the reputation of a haunting comes from those who look from the outside.
