The Exu Capa Preta candle is for those who need help and do not want to tell anyone. Family problems, work situations, a suspicion that does not yet have proof. Capa Preta is a falange of the street people (povo de rua) worshipped in Quimbanda and in the left-hand gira of Umbanda, and the name already says the method: the cape covers, erases the outline, and lets the guardian act where the noise would interfere.

Houses agree on Monday and in the colors black and red, and disagree on the rest. There are terreiros that place him under Ogum (Ogun), for the strength of opening a path; others under Omulu, for the connection with the dark; and there are those who treat him as one of the people of the forests (povo das matas), close to Oxóssi (Oshosi) and the science of leaves. In a house in Curitiba, the ponto (sacred song) says that he arrives with a double-edged knife saying he was a doctor.

At home, the Capa Preta candle asks for the same discretion he has. It stays outside or near the door, without an audience, without comment with the neighbor. It is not for spying on anyone or discovering someone else's secret: what it asks is that your matter remains protected until it is resolved.

What is it for

What is the Exu Capa Preta Candle for

Black on top and red on the bottom, the Exu Capa Preta candle carries the colors of the falange that acts without fanfare. It is lit for the protection of those who do not want to expose the problem, to unlock a stalled path, and to cut a demanda without noise.

  • Protection for a matter that is only yours

When the problem cannot be exposed, not even to the family. The candle asks that the guardian cover the situation with the cape and work without drawing attention to you.

  • Path that blocked without explanation

Stalled process, proposal that disappears, door that closes at the last minute. The firmeza asks for movement for what is stuck, and you continue doing your part.

  • Cut demanda without fanfare

For those who feel that something was sent and do not want open war. Capa Preta undoes what weighs and returns it to the earth, without wishing harm to who sent it.

  • Crossing a phase in the dark

Change of city, separation, a new beginning without any guarantees. The candle asks for spiritual grounding (firmeza) to move forward when you still do not see the end of the path.

  • Walking without being a target of the evil eye

Recent achievement, new position, growing business. The candle asks that the guardian let you pass without attracting envy from those who observe closely.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the Exu Capa Preta candle for discreet protection

“Lord Exu Capa Preta, I ask permission from Exu and the povo de rua and light this candle before you. You know what I have not told anyone. Cover this matter with your cape, so that no evil eye reaches what is still being resolved. Where the path is stuck, pass in front and unlock it. Where sent things arrived, collect them without noise and return them to the earth. I do not ask that anyone suffers, I ask that my life starts moving again. I keep my mouth closed and my heart clean, for that is how you like to work. I will return to give thanks. Laroyê, Exu Capa Preta!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Exu Capa Preta Candle

  1. 1

    Greet Exu before anything else

Say Laroyê and ask permission from the street people (povo de rua). Capa Preta works inside the house of Exu, and whoever arrives without permission starts the firmeza on the wrong foot.

  2. 2

    Choose a discreet corner

Near the gate, in the service area, or in a corner of the backyard, on the floor or on a low base. Away from the bedroom, the altar of the orixás, and from where the whole house passes.

  3. 3

Speak softly and say only one thing

Hold the candle and say your request almost in silence, with the name of the matter. The guardian's way is discreet, and a request made calmly suits him.

  4. 4

Light it and serve what the house commands

Light it with a match, put the marafo next to it, and perform the prayer. If your house does not work with alcohol, the candle is enough: this is also fundamento.

  5. 5

Let it burn and then dispose of the offering

Do not blow. Smother it with a saucer if you need to leave. At the end, the marafo goes to the earth, and the glass and wax go wrapped in the trash, outside the house.

Precautions before lighting

  • 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: use a firm base, away from curtains, dry grass, children and animals, and do not leave it burning in an unsupervised place.
  • Capa Preta does not work to spy, seek revenge, or control anyone's will. A crooked request has no support from a serious guardian.
  • Assentamento and obrigação of Exu are matters of the terreiro, with a zelador and fundamento. At home, what is appropriate is the candle and the prayer.
  • If the weight comes along with insomnia, anguish, or physical discomfort, seek medical help as well. The candle accompanies and does not replace the doctor.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Exu Capa Preta Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

Low flame, firm and without flickering

Many houses read the contained flame as the silent work of Capa Preta. It does not need to be high to be working.

  • Observe

    Flame that grows suddenly

First check for drafts and the length of the wick. Aside from that, the popular reading is of strong movement in the matter you requested.

  • Attention

    Glass darkened by soot

Shows that there was weight being burned. Wash the glass, take a ritual bath of arruda and, if it repeats in several candles, speak with a terreiro.

  • Attention

Candle that goes out before the middle

You can make a clearer request or try another day. Check the wind and wick, greet Exu again and relight; if it persists, seek a zelador.

  • Good sign

    Wax that melts evenly

A clean and regular burn is usually read as an accepted request and an open path for the guardian, without resistance in the middle of the ritual work.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Exu Capa Preta Candle

What is the Exu Capa Preta candle for?

It serves for discreet protection, to unlock a stopped path, and to cut a demanda without fanfare. It is the candle of someone who has a matter they do not want to expose. It accompanies the request and your effort; it does not mark a date for anything nor does it resolve things alone.

What is the color of the Exu Capa Preta candle?

Black and red, which are the colors registered for the falange. Black speaks of the work in the dark and red of the movement of Exu. Some houses use only the black candle, and the orientation of your terreiro is worth more than any list.

What is the best day to light the Exu Capa Preta candle?

Monday, the day of the povo de rua, after it gets dark. Some houses also set on Friday night or at the turn of Sunday to Monday. If the urgency calls for another day, greet Exu first and light it with respect.

Which orixá does Exu Capa Preta belong to?

There is no consensus. There are houses that place him under Ogum, for the strength of opening paths; others under Omulu, for the connection with the dark; and others in the povo das matas, near Oxóssi. Who defines it in your house is the leader, and all three readings coexist.

Can I light the Capa Preta candle inside the house?

The custom is to leave it outside or near the door, never in the bedroom or on the altar of the orixás. In an apartment, the service area works. The important thing is a firm base, nothing flammable nearby, and someone at home while it burns.

Can I blow out the Exu Capa Preta candle and light it again?

Avoid it. The candle of the discreet guardian works better burning completely. If you need to leave, cover the flame with a saucer, without blowing, and light it again upon your return repeating the greeting. Blowing is seen by many houses as undoing the prayer request with your own breath.

What is the difference between the Capa Preta candle and the common red and black one?

The color is the same, but the Capa Preta carries the label of the guardian and directs the prayer request to his falange, which works in silence. The red and black without a label is more general and serves for the house's guard with Exu and Pombagira.
