Cabocla Jupira Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
The Cabocla Jupira candle is the candle for those who want to care for their own ground. It brings the label of this forest cabocla and a single color, green, which Umbanda gives to Oxóssi and to the caboclas who work with leaves. It is lit on the congá, at the point of the terreiro's caboclos, and also in a new home, a newly purchased plot, or in the room of someone who is recovering, always with green leaves nearby.
Jupira is the name of a cabocla sung in the points alongside Jurema, Iara, and Jandira, and each house knows its own. In Ilhéus, Bahia, she is the main cabocla of Terreiro Matamba Tombenci Neto, and a study on the house calls her the owner of the land. Like the other caboclos, she works under the irradiation of Oxóssi, the hunter, receives the candle on Thursday, and is greeted with the cry Okê Caboclo!
The Jupira candle does not fight, does not cut with violence, and does not make a request against anyone. Her work is of care: to root those who arrived in a new place, protect those who live under the same roof, and bring, through the leaves, the calm that the house lost. It is the candle of those who plant and wait.
What is it for
What is the Cabocla Jupira Candle for
The Cabocla Jupira candle is green, the color of the forests and the caboclas of the Oxóssi line. It is lit to protect the house and those who live in it, to set the ground during a move, to give strength to those who care for someone sick, and to bring calm to hectic days.
-
Protect the house and those who live in it
For the home that lacks peace, with people getting sick for no reason or pets acting strange in the environment. The green candle with leaves on the saucer asks the cabocla to care for the roof and every resident.
-
To set the ground in a new house
Moving, land purchased, return to the hometown. Light it on the first Thursday in the new place and ask that the family take root there, with health and good neighborliness.
-
Strength to care for someone who is sick
For those who care for an elderly father, a hospitalized son, or a relative in recovery. The cabocla of the leaves is called to give strength to the caregiver, along with medical treatment.
-
Calm and ground during hectic days
When your head won't stop and you feel like you have lost your footing. The green candle and a ritual bath of fresh leaves restore the feeling of being planted, with the body and the house in order.
-
To thank the cabocla after the gira
If Jupira answered you in the terreiro and prescribed a ritual bath or tea, the candle at home sets what she passed. In the end, return with a fruit and a green candle to say thank you.

Cabocla Jupira
Cabocla of the forest, called the owner of the land
The label is hers and the prayer request goes in her name. Jupira is remembered as the cabocla who cares for the ground where the house stands and those who live in it. Therefore, her candle is sought for the home, moving, and family.

Oxóssi
King of the forests, father of the caboclos
In Umbanda, Oxóssi is the Pai of the caboclos who manifest in the giras. The green of the candle and Thursday come from him, and the abundance he brings combines with the prayer request for a provided home.
Know Oxóssi -
Ossaim (Osanyin)
Lord of the leaves that heal
Caboclas work a lot with leaf, ritual bath, and tea, and the leaf is the domain of Ossaim. Some houses remember him when consecrating caboclas of healing; it is not a rule in all terreiros.

Prayer to light
Candle prayer of Cabocla Jupira for the home and for the family
“Okê Caboclo! Cabocla Jupira, mistress of the land, I light this green light in the middle of the leaves and call your name. Step on the ground of this house and consecrate every corner of it. Care for those who sleep here, from the oldest to the youngest, and for those who are yet to arrive. Where there is illness, bring the right leaf and the right hand to care. Where there is fighting, bring the silence of the forest, which calms without needing a word. Teach me to have the patience of one who plants and waits for the root to take. May this house be a shelter for those in need and an open door for what is good. With permission from Pai Oxóssi, receive this fruit and my gratitude. Okê Caboclo!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Candle of Cabocla Jupira
- 1
Open the house and let the air in
Before everything, open windows and doors for a few minutes. Cabocla is from the forest and the open air, and an airy house better receives the ritual work of care that the candle will perform.
- 2
Make a nest of leaves on the plate
Line the clay plate with fern, rosemary, or other fresh green leaves, forming a nest. The candle stays in the center, settled in the forest that the cabocla recognizes.
- 3
Offer the fruit and the water
Place the cut or whole fruit next to the plate and the glass of water on the other side. Sweet fruit is a common offering to the caboclos and recalls the abundance requested for the house.
- 4
Say the name of those who live in the house
Hold the candle, say the address or the name of the place and the name of each resident. Then light it with a match, give the cry Okê Caboclo! and perform the prayer calmly.
- 5
Plant what is left over
Do not blow. At the end of the week, the leaves and the fruit go to the soil of a backyard, a large pot, or at the foot of a tree. The water waters a plant, and the wax is wrapped for the trash.
Precautions before lighting
- Leaves dry with the heat of the flame. Keep the nest of leaves away from the wick, use a firm plate and do not leave the candle lit with the house empty.
- Jupira cares, she does not attack. Do not request that a neighbor move out or that someone in the family falls ill; a request like that does not match the line of the caboclos.
- A prayer request for someone who is sick goes along with the doctor and the treatment. The candle gives strength to the caregiver, but it does not replace medicine or a consultation.
- Blessing (benzimento) of a new house with foundation, firmeza of the land, and assentamento (consecrated foundation) are done with the terreiro and the zelador. The candle at home is the daily prayer.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Cabocla Jupira Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
Calm and constant flame
Many houses read the serene flame as a protected home and a prayer request welcomed by the cabocla. It is the most expected sign of a care candle.
- Good sign
Leaves on the plate that stay green
When the leaves resist the heat and do not wither immediately, some read it as an environment with life and a path of health for the house. Give thanks at the end.
- Attention
Trembling flame without wind
It may reflect a restless environment. Perform a smoke cleansing (defumação) of rosemary through the rooms, pray again and, if the house remains heavy, take the matter to a terreiro.
- Attention
Leaves that darken quickly
Some houses read it as a charge being pulled from the environment. Replace the leaves with fresh ones in the middle of the week and perform a ritual bath of basil on those who live there.
- Observe
Wax that drips over the leaves
It is common when the plate is shallow or the candle is near the wind. Move the leaves away from the wick for safety and do not draw conclusions based only on that.

Fern
Nephrolepis exaltata
Plant of the closed forest, beloved of the caboclos. Lining the plate, it turns the ground into the green floor where the cabocla candle stays settled during the week.

Rosemary
Rosmarinus officinalis
Brings joy and health to the house. A rosemary smoke cleansing through the rooms on the day of lighting opens the environment for the cabocla's care.
See the herb -
Basil
Ocimum basilicum
Soft cleansing herb for the family. A basil ritual bath for those living in the house, in the middle of the week, pairs well with a request for protection.

Questions about the Cabocla Jupira Candle
What is the Cabocla Jupira candle for?
To protect the house and those who live in it, to set the ground during a move, to give strength to those caring for someone sick, and to bring calm on hectic days. It is a candle of care and of roots, lit with green leaves and fruit, without a request against anyone.
Who is Cabocla Jupira in Umbanda?
She is a cabocla of the forest, from the line of Oxóssi, sung in pontos alongside Jurema, Iara, and Jandira. In Ilhéus, in Bahia, she is the main cabocla of Terreiro Matamba Tombenci Neto, and a study about the house calls her the owner of the land. Each terreiro knows its own Jupira.
What is the difference between Cabocla Jupira and Cabocla Jurema?
Both are caboclas of the forest and work with leaves. Jurema is the most well known and much sought after for self-esteem, attraction, and healing. Jupira is remembered above all for the care of the home, the land, and the family. Many houses sing both in the same gira.
What is the best day to light the candle of Cabocla Jupira?
Thursday, the day of Oxóssi and the caboclos, preferably in the morning. For a new house, it is worth lighting it on the first Thursday after moving. If the terreiro you attend sets caboclas on another day, follow the custom of the house.
Can I light the cabocla candle in a new house before moving?
You can, as long as someone stays in the place while it burns. A 7-day candle in an empty house is a fire risk. If you cannot stay, light a matchstick candle during a visit and leave the 7-day candle for when you are already living there.
What to do with the leaves and the fruit afterward?
Return everything to the earth: backyard, large pot, or at the foot of a tree. The water from the cup waters a plant in the house. The remaining wax goes into the common trash, wrapped in paper, and the clay plate is washed and stored for the next candle.
