The Boiadeiro Navizala candle is for those who feel off track, like cattle that lost the herd. Navizala is a boiadeiro of Umbanda, remembered in terreiros as a cowboy from the sertão of Pernambuco, who herded cattle across the Northeast and helped those he found along the path. In the gira, he does the same with spirits: he rounds up the lost ones and brings them back to the right path.

Boiadeiros are spirit guides with the attire of cowboys, ranch hands, and muleteers of the sertão. They arrive with a firm step, the crack of a whip in the air, and a loud shout, and they work on cutting off obsessing spirits and providing firmeza for those who are falling. Tradition links the line to Oxóssi (Oshosi), and many houses also mention Iansã (Oya), Ogum (Ogun), or Oxalá (Obatala). For Navizala, there are houses that set brown and white candles, and the festivals of São João and São Pedro, in June, are remembered as his days. The day of the week varies from house to house.

At home, the Navizala candle does not make the noise of a gira. It asks for the best of what the cowboy has: speaking without beating around the bush, work from sunup to sundown, and patience to bring back what was lost, whether it is a person, a thought, or the path itself. Without haste and without a whip for anyone.

What is it for

What is the Boiadeiro Navizala Candle for

The Boiadeiro Navizala candle is dedicated to the Umbanda cowboy who gathers stray cattle, which in the gira means a lost spirit and people off course. Brown and white, it receives requests for a firm path, for courage at work, and for the removal of a disturbing spirit.

  • Return to my path

After a phase of wrong choices, addiction, or bad company. The candle asks the cowboy to gather what was scattered and put you back on the right road.

  • Remove a disturbing spirit

Heavy sleep, irritation without reason, the feeling of someone nearby. The Boiadeiros lasso the obsessing spirit and take it to where it must go, without violence and with respect.

  • Strength for heavy ritual work

For those who work in the field, on a construction site, on the road, or on a double shift. Navizala knows the sun of the sertão and asks for firmness in the body and in the spirit of those who cannot stop.

  • Spiritual support in recovery

Tradition tells that Navizala learned the herbs from her mother, a healer and prayer woman (rezadeira). The candle asks for spiritual support for those who are recovering, always together with medical treatment.

  • Bring back those who moved away

A son who left home after a fight, a brother who disappeared. The request is not to imprison anyone, but so that the door remains open and the path back is illuminated.

Prayer to light

Candle prayer of Boiadeiro Navizala for the path

“Boiadeiro Navizala, vaqueiro do sertão, I light this brown and white light with your name. You who drove the herd along dirt roads and under the hot sun, and never left a head of cattle behind, watch over me. Gather what is scattered in my head and in my life. Lasso the spirit that disturbs me and take it to its place, with the respect that every child of God deserves. Give me the strength of those who work from sunup to sundown and the direct speech of those who have no hesitation. If any of mine is lost, illuminate the path back, without holding anyone. May your herd arrive whole at the gate, and I with it. Getruá, Boiadeiro!”

Step by step

How to set the Candle of Boiadeiro Navizala

  1. 1

Choose a firm and simple place

Boiadeiro does not ask for luxury. A firm table or the floor of a clean corner, away from curtains, the stove, and where children play, will suffice.

  2. 2

Take a ritual bath of pepper tree

Before lighting, a ritual bath of pepper tree from the neck down. It is a herb of cutting and firmeza, good for those who will ask that the obsessing spirit be bound.

  3. 3

Set up the plate with the rapadura

Candle in the center of the plate, a glass of water beside it, and the rapadura in front, with the branch of pepper tree or rosemary. A tribute from the sertão, the way the vaqueiro likes it.

  4. 4

    Call Navizala by name

Light with a match, shout Getruá, Boiadeiro, and call Navizala. Speak straight, without decoration, as one speaks to a vaqueiro: what was lost and what needs to return.

  5. 5

    Finish without blowing

Vaqueiro does not put out fire with a breath. To go out, smother it with a saucer and relight it upon return. On the gate of the seventh day, the water goes to the earth, the rapadura and branch to the organic waste, and the glass to recycling.

Precautions before lighting

  • The 7-day candle burns for several days: firm plate, away from cloth, curtains, children, and animals. If set on the floor, take care that no one trips.
  • Navizala gathers, does not bind. Do not light the candle to force someone to return nor to dominate the will of another person.
  • In a request for recovery, the candle accompanies the treatment and never replaces the doctor. Addiction and dependency also have treatment: seek out the CAPS.
  • Tobacco leaf, drink, and gira ritual work are subject to the orientation of the terreiro. At home, rapadura and fresh water are enough as an offering.
