There are days when the house feels heavy, the body feels sluggish, and nothing seems to get done. When a ritual bath and smoke cleansing (defumação) are no longer enough, terreiros turn to a stronger cleansing: the sacudimento. It is a deep spiritual cleansing (descarrego), performed with herbs passed over the body or the environment, capable of "shaking off" the dense energy that has stuck to it.
This guide explains what sacudimento is, what it is for, and which herbs and materials are involved. It also shows how the bate-folhas technique works, the difference between shaking a person and a house, and why this practice always requires the guidance of a Pai or Mãe de santo.
What is sacudimento
The sacudimento is a spiritual cleansing ritual from Afro-Brazilian religions, more present in Umbanda. The name says a lot: the idea is to shake, to remove from the person or the environment the heavy energy that has accumulated. It is a strong spiritual cleansing (descarrego) and, at the same time, a reorganization of the energetic field.
In practice, a bundle of herbs is passed over the body of the seeker or through the corners of the house. The leaves work like a magnet: they pull the dense charge toward themselves. Therefore, sacudimento is usually indicated when other lighter cleansings, such as the spiritual pass (passe), the smoke cleansing (defumação), and the ritual bath, can no longer break down what is stuck.
This power of the leaves has ancient roots. In Bantu-tradition Candomblé, there is the bate-folha, and a saying summarizes everything: "without leaf there is no Orixá." Umbanda inherited this foundation and adapted it to its own liturgy, treating herbs as living allies in the cleansing.
What is sacudimento for
The sacudimento is indicated for people or environments that are charged, discouraged, or lacking flow. As Umbanda houses describe, it is activated when the lighter ritualistic practices cannot alone break down dense energy. It serves to:
- Release dense energy that the body accumulated during difficult phases.
- Clean the house after conflicts, illnesses, heavy visits, or a long bad period.
- Reorganize the field of those who feel stuck in work, health, or relationships.
- Prepare the ground so that subsequent baths, firmezas, and ritual works have space to act.
The goal is to return lightness and peace. Many people describe the feeling after the sacudimento as having taken a weight off their backs.
The sacudimento prepares and relieves, but it is not magic with a deadline. No serious Pai or Mãe de santo promises to "resolve everything in a day." The cleansing opens space, and the rest comes with faith, care, and walking.
The herbs and materials of the sacudimento
The base of the sacudimento is the descarrego herbs, leaves known for the strength to cut heavy energy. The most used are:
- Arruda: the queen of descarrego, cuts evil eye and dense charge.
- Guiné: powerful against stuck energies and light mandingas.
- Alecrim: closes the process with protection and renewal.
- Espada-de-são-jorge: Ogum (Ogun) plant, linked to cutting and defense.
- Vassourinha: used to "sweep" the energy of the environment.
Besides the leaves, the sacudimento can gather other elements, always according to the house orientation and the objective. Fruits, vegetables, flowers, candles of various colors, popcorn (the bri linked to Obaluaê), seeds, and waters from the sea, river, or waterfall are included. Each material has a function within the fundamento.
How it is done: the gesture of hitting the leaves
The central technique of the sacudimento is the bate-folhas. The medium or leader holds a firm handful of herbs and works with it in simple steps, but full of fundamento:
- Set the intention with prayer, asking permission from the spirit guides and the house direction.
- Pass the bundle of herbs over the person's body, from top to bottom, in the direction of removing the load.
- Hit the leaves on the ground from time to time, to discharge the collected energy into them.
- Finish and discard the herbs used in the oriented destination, because they become charged.
In the environment sacudimento, the same gesture is taken to the corners of the house, to the doors and windows, through which energy enters and leaves. The movement of the leaves "shakes" what was stagnant and reopens the circulation of axé in the space.
The herbs used in the sacudimento are not kept nor reused. They carry the removed energy and need ritual disposal, as the house directs, never in the common trash.
Person sacudimento and house sacudimento
There are two large contexts for the sacudimento, and it is worth understanding the difference.
The sacudimento de pessoa is done directly on the seeker. The herbs pass over the body to remove the load that the person carries. It is usually accompanied by a herbal bath afterwards to seal the cleansing, and sometimes by an amaci to set the head.
The sacudimento de casa cleanses the environment. In addition to the herbs passed through the rooms, it is common to use smoke cleansing (defumação), water with coarse salt, and candles. The idea is to renew the energy of the entire space, especially after heavy phases. Those who want to complement it can also learn about the banho de sal grosso and the defumação de descarrego.
In both cases, the sacudimento does not work alone. It usually opens a path for other cares, such as the banho para abrir caminhos, which reinforces the renewal after the cleansing.
Why does the sacudimento require guidance
Here comes the most important point. The sacudimento is a limpeza forte, and a strong cleansing deals with truly dense energy. Therefore, tradition insists that it be conducted or guided by a pai ou mãe de santo, or by someone experienced from the house.
Doing a complete sacudimento on your own, copying loose recipes from the internet, may not discharge correctly or may leave the person more sensitive. The leader knows how to read what the person or the environment needs, choose the right herbs, and give the correct destination to the material. The sacudimento is a gesture of care within a fundamento, not a home trick.
This does not prevent small daily cares at home, such as smoke cleansing and taking herbal baths. But the sacudimento proper, the one indicated for heavy loads, is the territory of those who have axé and experience to conduct it safely.
Frequently asked questions
What is sacudimento in Umbanda?
Sacudimento is a strong spiritual cleansing ritual, performed with herbs passed over a person's body or the environment. It removes the dense energy that has accumulated, functioning as a deep descarrego. It is indicated when lighter cleansings, such as a ritual bath and smoke cleansing (defumação), are no longer sufficient on their own.
What is sacudimento for?
It serves to discharge heavy energy from people and environments, reorganize the field of those who feel stuck, and prepare the ground for other ritual works. It restores lightness and peace, but it is not a promise of guaranteed results. It is cleansing and rebalancing, done with faith and guidance.
Which herbs are used in sacudimento?
The most traditional are arruda, guiné, alecrim, espada-de-são-jorge, and vassourinha, all known for cutting dense energy. In addition to the leaves, the ritual can use fruits, flowers, candles, popcorn, seeds, and waters from the sea, river, or waterfall, always according to the house's guidance and the objective.
Can you do sacudimento at home?
Light precautions, such as smoke cleansing and taking ritual baths with herbs, can be done at home. But the complete sacudimento, indicated for heavy loads, requires the guidance of a Pai or Mãe de santo. They know how to choose the herbs, conduct the gesture, and give the correct ritual destination to the material used.
What is the difference between sacudimento and smoke cleansing (defumação)?
Smoke cleansing cleanses through the smoke of burned herbs and is lighter, good for daily life. Sacudimento is stronger: the herbs are passed over the body or the environment to pull the dense load and are then discarded. Often, the two are combined in the same cleansing ritual work.
