Summary

Firmeza in Umbanda is the simple and permanent ritual assembly of sacred elements (candle, glass of water, herbs, stones or pointers) that creates a continuous condensing pole of protection and connection with the Guardian Angel or spiritual guides.

Different from assentamento (which is complex and houses the vital axé of an orixá (orisha) in an initiatory rite), firmeza can be performed by any devotee in their home, acting as a psychic filter that absorbs negativities and sustains the vibratory balance of the environment.

To set the Guardian Angel, a white candle is lit next to a glass of crystalline water in an elevated location (above head height), changing the water weekly and renewing the prayer with sincerity of purpose.

You arrive at the gira and hear: "firma a candle for him". Or: "before giving a spiritual pass, firma your spirit guides". The word appears all the time in the terreiro, and almost never does anyone stop to explain what it means.

A firmeza in Umbanda is the smallest ritual unit that exists. It is what remains when you remove everything else: a flame, an intention, and a fixed point of support. This article explains the concept, shows the difference from the assentamento, covers the four most common types, and teaches how to set (firmar) a candle at home safely.

What is firmeza in Umbanda

Firmeza is a small set of elements gathered with a specific purpose, to concentrate a force and sustain it for a period.

The Casa de Caridade Gauisa, in Rio de Janeiro, gives the most didactic formulation I found. To establish (firmar) a force means that it will vibrate and multiply while the candle is lit. When the candle goes out, the task ends.

Keep these two words in mind, because they define everything: the firmeza is temporary and it is activated. The lit candle is the trigger.

Rubens Saraceni, in the book Rituais Umbandistas, defines firming (firmar) a spirit guide or an Orixá in a similar way. It is to give them the minimum conditions of having a fixed point, where they can receive requests for help and offerings. The image is good: firmar is giving ground to faith.

The firmeza does not solve a problem alone and does not guarantee a result. It sustains an intention for the time it remains active. The ritual work continues to be yours.

Firmeza and assentamento: the difference that changes everything

This is the most common confusion, and it matters because it separates what you can do alone from what depends on the house's foundation.

FirmezaAssentamento
DurationTemporary, lasts while it is activatedPermanent
ActivationDepends on the lit candle and the prayerStays alive even without a lit candle
StructureFew elements, simplifiedComplete structure, planted
Who sets it upThe medium can set it up, with guidanceThe house leader, with foundation

Saraceni summarizes with a military analogy: the firmeza is an advanced installation of a division, and the assentamento is the fortress that houses the entire army.

The synthesis worth keeping: every firmeza is a mini-assentamento, but no assentamento is a firmeza.

In Candomblé the vocabulary is different, and it is worth noting so as not to mix traditions. In the ketu nation, "firmeza" is not used in this sense. What exists is the assentamento, the igba orixá. A research published in Religião & Sociedade describes it as the dwelling of the Orixá and the place where the relationship between person and Orixá takes place. It is not born ready: it grows with offerings and care throughout life. The quartinha is one of the elements of this set.

The four types of firmeza

Candle firmeza for the head orixá

It is the simplest and the entry point. A candle, a glass of water and, if you wish, an incense. If in doubt about which is your orixá, use white candle, which serves everyone. If you already know, use the corresponding color: white for Oxalá (Obatala), blue for Iemanjá (Yemoja), green for Oxóssi (Oshosi). The complete table is in the article about ritual candle colors.

Exu (Eshu) and Pombagira firmeza

Before anything else, it is worth undoing the Christian prejudice that has persecuted Exu for over a century. He is not the evil of any tradition. Exu is the guardian who works at the entrance, screens the incoming energy and opens the paths of the work. The black candle and the drink that appear in the firmeza are liturgical elements, and nothing more.

In the house, the firmeza happens at the tronqueira, to the left of those entering. A guardian Exu remains settled there on a permanent basis, and the others are firmados inside it without being settled. The most cited elements are ponto riscado with pemba, candle, drink in a quartinha and cigar.

Those who do not have a terreiro can maintain a personal spot at home. The Templo Escola de Umbanda Sagrada Sete Pedreiras advises adapting the spot to whatever is possible: backyard, balcony, laundry room or even the bedroom. What sustains the firmeza is the bond, not the size of the space.

Regarding the day, there is a legitimate divergence between the houses. Many firm on Friday, pointed out as the day of greatest energy circulation in the tronqueira. Others maintain Monday, the traditional day of Exu in Umbanda. Both practices are current, and the decision is made by your leader.

Firmeza of the bead necklaces

Here lies a real pun, and undoing it helps a lot.

The firma is the largest bead that closes the bead necklace. The name comes precisely from that: it closes and firms the necklace. It is through there that the energy enters and leaves the guia, and that is why the firma stays on the nape.

Firming the bead necklaces, on the other hand, is the act of the medium before starting the ritual work. He firms his spirit guides in the field of action, under the irradiation of the Orixás who sustain the gira. In other words: the bead necklace, the object, is firmed, and the spirit guides, the entities, are firmed.

Firmeza of the ponto riscado

The ponto riscado is the signature of the spirit and the seal with which it firms the ritual work. There are types with declared functions: the firmamento point anchors the strength during the ritual work, the opening point establishes the field of the gira, the defense point repels dense influences.

A rule that is not negotiated: a spirit's ponto riscado is not copied from the internet. The subject is detailed in the article about ponto riscado in umbanda.

How to firm a candle at home, step by step

This is the simple firmeza, of a candle for the head orixá. Anyone of faith can do it, without a house foundation.

  1. Choose the place. A quiet corner, away from circulation. It can be your umbanda altar or a clean shelf reserved for this.
  2. Prepare the base. A ceramic plate, saucer, or glass candlestick. Never directly on wood, cloth, or paper.
  3. Place the glass with water next to the candle. The water helps balance the field and absorbs part of the density.
  4. Light the candle and say your intention out loud or in your thoughts, with clarity and without haste. One intention per firmeza.
  5. Let it burn. The 7-day candle sustains the firmeza for about a week. This is the average lifespan of a firmeza.
  6. Renew when finished. Change the water, clean the area and redo it if it still makes sense.

Regarding extinguishing the candle and discarding the wax, the custom varies greatly and the subject already has its own article on the blog: how to use candles in rituals. The disposal guidance is always from whoever leads your house.

Safety with a lit candle

A firmeza leaves a fire lit inside the house for days. Caring for the fire is part of the fundamento, it is not an interruption of the ritual.

  • Non-flammable surface always: dishes, glass, ceramic or metal.
  • Away from what catches fire. The Fire Department of Santa Catarina advises keep candles away from papers, curtains and sofas.
  • Never without supervision. Do not sleep with a lit candle in the bedroom and extinguish it before leaving the house.
  • Out of reach of children and animals. A cat's tail can knock over a 7-day candle.
  • Away from drafts. An open window and a fan increase the flame and can tip over the candle.

An interrupted firmeza can be redone at any time. A burned house, not.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a firmeza last?

About a week, which is the time for a 7-day candle to burn completely. The set loses strength because flowers, herbs and perfumes break down and absorb the energy of the environment. For this reason, many houses work with weekly renewal.

Do I need to know my Orixá to set a candle?

No. If in doubt, use a white candle, which serves everyone and is the safest choice for those who have not yet received that information from their house. When you know your head orixá, you can start using the corresponding color in the firmeza.

Can I blow out the candle before it finishes?

You can, mainly for safety. If you need to leave the house or sleep, extinguish it without guilt and light it again later. The most widespread custom is to extinguish it by smothering, not by blowing. It is a widely practiced custom, and each house has its own guidance.

Can I set Exu at home, without a terreiro?

Yes, with a personal sacred spot adapted to your space, whether it is a backyard, balcony, laundry room, or a reserved corner. What sustains it is the bond, not the size of the place. If you are from a house, speak first with your leader about the form and the elements.

Can anyone set up a firmeza?

A simple candle firmeza, yes. Firmeza of Exu, firmeza of spirit guides, and ponto riscado involve fundamento and require guidance from those who lead the house. The practical rule is simple: the more elements and the more specific the spirit, the more the decision belongs to the terreiro.
