Orange and Yellow Candle
Cycle turnaround and money that starts circulating again, with the rainbow of Oxumarê and the gold of Oxum (Oshun)
Orange and Yellow Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Those who look for the orange and yellow candle are almost always coming out of something: a crisis in trade, a job that ended, a year in which money came in and out without leaving a trace. The two bands, one above the other, remind one of the late afternoon sun, and the candle is used in Umbanda and by devotees of the orixás (orishas) precisely to mark the passage from one cycle to another.
This bicolor does not have a single owner fixed in all houses, and it is good to say this clearly. The most common reading links the candle to Oxumarê, the orixá of the serpent and the rainbow, who rules the wealth that goes and returns and has Tuesday as its day. The yellow also pulls Oxum, the lady of gold and rivers, greeted on Saturday. Some houses prefer yellow with green for Oxumarê; here, orange enters as one of the colors of his rainbow.
At home, it works better as a candle of new beginnings than of emergency. It does not cut demanda nor resolve debt overnight. What it does is accompany a decision already made, such as opening the doors of a store, launching a product, or reorganizing accounts, asking that the movement be in favor.
What is it for
What is the Orange and Yellow Candle for
The orange and yellow candle joins two warm colors from the Oxumarê rainbow with the yellow of Oxum. It is lit to turn over a bad phase, make money start circulating again, open a new business, and reignite the creativity of those who live from their own work.
-
Turning the page after a bad phase
For the end of a crisis, of a business that closed, or of a period of losses. Light it on the first day of the change, like marking on the calendar that the cycle is now another.
-
Make money start circulating again
Oxumarê rules the wealth that comes and goes. The candle accompanies those who are reorganizing their finances and want the income to become constant again, without asking for big luck or a shortcut.
-
Inaugurate the store or launch a product
Many people light it on the eve of the opening, on the counter, or in the office. It is a prayer request for a good start, so that the movement arrives and the first customers return.
-
Reignite creativity at work
For those who live from ideas, sales, or crafts and feel they always repeat the same thing. Leave the candle near the work table while you test a new path.
-
Good conversation in a negotiation
Before closing a contract, renegotiating a debt, or asking for a raise. The yellow of Oxum is that of diplomacy, and the candle helps you arrive at the conversation with calm and tact.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the orange and yellow candle to Oxumarê and Oxum
“Pai Oxumarê, lord of the rainbow arc that connects heaven and earth, I light this candle at the beginning of a new phase. What passed, I surrender. What I lost, I do not keep counting. Turn the wheel of my life toward the side of movement and make my work yield again, without haste and without waste. Mãe Oxum, mistress of gold and running water, teach my hands to care for what arrives and not to let what is mine flow away. Open my mouth for the right word and my eyes for the opportunity I have not yet seen. May this flame mark the day I started over. Arroboboi! Ora Yeyê Ô!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Orange and Yellow Candle
- 1
Choose the place for the ritual work
If the request is for business, the candle stays near the register or the entrance door. If it is for personal life, on a table in the living room, with daylight and away from drafts.
- 2
Cover and set up the saucer
Spread the yellow cloth, place the saucer, and scatter the corn around. The corn is food for Oxumarê and reminds us of the abundance that multiplies. The coin goes to the side, face up.
- 3
Speak what is changing
With the candle in your hands, say in a low voice which cycle is closing and which is beginning. The more concrete, the better: the name of the store, the new job, the bill you want to get up to date.
- 4
Light and pray
Light with a match, call Oxumarê and Oxum by name and say the prayer. Then stay for a few minutes looking at the flame. This is not the time for bargaining, it is the time to assume the commitment to the new phase.
- 5
Finish without blowing
Let it burn for seven days. If you need to leave, smother it with a saucer and relight it upon your return. At the end, the corn goes to the earth or to the birds, the coin stays kept in the wallet, and the wax goes to the trash.
Precautions before lighting
- A 7-day candle lit in business needs a safe place: away from paper, merchandise, and curtains, in a firm saucer and on a surface that does not burn.
- This is a candle of new beginnings, not of gain at the expense of another person. Do not use it to hinder a competitor or to take what belongs to someone else.
- The consecrated foundation (assentamento) of Oxumarê or Oxum, with fundamento and obligation, is a matter for the leader of your terreiro. The candle at home is devotion, it does not replace that.
- The candle accompanies your financial planning and does not take its place. Organized accounts and work done continue to be your part.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Orange and Yellow Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High and golden flame
Many houses read it as a sign that the request for a new beginning was well received and that the movement is in your favor. Proceed with what you planned.
- Good sign
Flame dancing in waves
For an Oxumarê candle, the flame that undulates like a serpent is usually read as change in progress. Things are moving, even if slowly.
- Attention
Low and weak flame for days
It may indicate that the change requires more preparation than you imagined. Review the plan calmly and, if you wish, repeat the candle on a Tuesday.
- Attention
Wax running only to one side
Some readings say that one part of the request is moving and another is not. Look at which area remained still and treat it separately, without haste.
- Observe
Sparks and crackles in the wick
Before reading, check if the wick is not damp or too long. If everything is correct, some understand it as news arriving soon.

Questions about the Orange and Yellow Candle
Which orixá owns the orange and yellow candle?
The most common reading is Oxumarê, the orixá of the rainbow, with Oxum entering through the yellow. As a bicolor, it does not have a single owner in all houses, so it is worth asking at your terreiro if the combination is used for another orixá there.
What is the best day to light the orange and yellow candle?
Tuesday, the most cited day for Oxumarê. If the prayer request is directed to Oxum, Saturday also works. To mark an inauguration, many people prefer to light it on the day of the opening itself, early in the morning.
Can I blow out the orange and yellow candle and light it again?
You can, as long as you do not blow. Smother the flame with a saucer or a spoon when you need to leave and relight it when you return. The custom is not to blow because the breath is seen as undoing the prayer request with your own breath.
What do I do with the corn, the coin, and the leftover wax?
The corn returns to nature: in the soil of a pot, in the backyard, or for the birds. The coin stays in the wallet or in the cash register as a reminder of the new cycle. The leftover wax goes into the common trash, wrapped in paper.
What is the difference between the orange and yellow candle and the green and yellow one?
The green and yellow is the classic pair of Oxumarê in Candomblé, and in Umbanda many houses give it to Oxóssi (Oshosi) and Oxum. The orange and yellow leans toward warmth and spirit, and for this reason, it is chosen for new beginnings at work and in prayer requests that also involve Oxum.
Can I light the orange and yellow candle in my shop?
You can, and it is one of the most common uses. Choose a spot near the register or the entrance, out of reach of customers, children, and merchandise. If the shop closes at night, prefer the stick candle or snuff out the 7 day candle before leaving.
