Whoever seeks the Zé Pilintra candle is almost always in a tight spot: a partner who disappeared with the agreement, a dangerous neighborhood on the way home, a bill that does not balance. It is the votive candle of Seu Zé, with the label of the malandro in a white suit and Panama hat, in red and white colors. It appears on the Umbanda congá, on a bar altar in Rio, and in the home of those who have faith in the advocate of the poor.

Seu Zé has two dwellings. In Umbanda, he is the best known name in the line of the malandros, whom some houses worship along with the exus, others in their own gira, and others near the baianos. In northeastern Catimbó, he is a juremeiro master, healer, and counselor. He is not Exu (Eshu) nor a demon. Many houses light the candle on Monday, the day of the povo da rua, others on Friday, and Rio celebrates Seu Zé on July 7 by municipal law.

At home, the candle asks for the posture of someone talking to an older and clever friend: frankness, no whining, no cunning against the innocent. Seu Zé's malandragem is flexibility with character. He does not win a bet for anyone, does not bend another person's will, and does not accept a prayer request to harm someone who is not at fault.

What is it for

What is the Zé Pilintra Candle for

Red and white like the suit and tie of the malandro, the candle of Zé Pilintra is lit for Seu Zé, spirit guide of the malandragem line and master of Jurema. It asks for protection on the street, a way out of a tight spot, justice for the humble, and counsel.

  • Walking safely on the street and at night

For those who work in the early hours, return late, or pass through dangerous places. Seu Zé knows the street like no one else and is called to guard the path of departure and return.

  • Seeing the false friend

When there is gossip, poorly explained social circles, or someone who smiles to your face and speaks behind your back. The prayer request is to see clearly who is who before trusting again.

  • Justice for those who were deceived

Seu Zé is the advocate of the humble. The candle is lit when someone was exploited or cheated, asking for the truth to appear, without wishing harm on anyone.

  • A way out of a financial tight spot

Debt, a gig that doesn't pay, a stalled business. The candle asks for resourcefulness and an honest door to get out of the struggle. You do the work, Seu Zé helps you see the shortcut.

  • Strength for the sick, through the healing master

In Jurema, Seu Zé is a master who heals. Many devotees light the candle for someone hospitalized or in treatment, asking for spiritual support alongside medical care.

  • To thank for a grace received

When the pressure has passed, the custom is to return with Seu Zé's candle and a sincere thank you. Malandro likes those who remember him in joy, and not just in the moment of need.

    Seu Zé Pilintra

Malandro in a white suit, lawyer of the poor

The candle is his by name and by color: the white of the linen suit and the red of the tie and the handkerchief. He works protecting the humble and the bohemians, advising with good humor and defending those whom life left aside.

  • Illustration of Ogum in sacred art

    Ogum (Ogun)

Lord of the paths and of demands

Some houses of Umbanda place the line of the malandros under the irradiation of Ogum, owner of the road and of the just fight. It is not a rule: in others it stays with the left, and in Jurema this connection does not exist. Follow your house.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the Zé Pilintra candle to the malandragem of light

“Seu Zé Pilintra, malandro in a white suit who knows every corner of this world, I light this red and white candle and call you with respect. You, who have already passed through hunger, cold, and injustice, know the size of the pressure I am in. Lend me your sharp eye so I can see who truly walks with me and who is only pretending. Guard my steps on the street, by day and by night. Give me the agility to resolve what is mine without stepping on anyone. If my cause is just, stay by my side; if I am wrong, show me with your frankness. Receive this light as one receives a friend at the bar door. Salve Seu Zé! Salve the malandragem!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Zé Pilintra candle

  1. 1

Choose a firm and low corner

Seu Zé is of the street and the ground. A low piece of furniture near the front door or your congá work well. The place needs to be stable and away from curtains, because the candle will burn for days.

  2. 2

    Line and arrange the spot

Spread the handkerchief, place the saucer in the center and the glass beside it. The sprig of arruda or guiné stays leaning against the saucer. Arranging it with care is already a way to show respect to the malandro.

  3. 3

Hold the candle and speak the prayer request

With the candle in your hands, tell Seu Zé what is happening, the way you would tell a friend. Without embellishment and without lies. Malandro knows from afar who is trying to play games.

  4. 4

Light it and call by name

Light it with a match, say that the candle is for Seu Zé Pilintra and say the prayer. The drink, when the house uses it, is only for offering. It stays in the glass and is not for the person who lights it to drink.

  5. 5

Give the seven days and conclude

Do not blow. Let the candle burn until the end and give thanks. The water or the beer goes to the ground or to the street, away from the door. The empty glass goes to the recyclable trash, wrapped in paper.

Precautions before lighting

  • The votive burns for days. Keep it away from curtains, paper, and out of reach of children and animals, on a plate that can withstand heat, and never inside a closed cabinet.
  • Seu Zé does not bind anyone's will, does not win games for anyone, and does not accept requests to harm the innocent. Asking this of him is a lack of respect for the malandragem de luz.
  • Drink and tobacco are offerings of the rite, defined by the spirit and by the leader of the house. Firmeza with spirit incorporation and assentamento is with the zelador of your terreiro.
  • When the candle is for someone who is sick, it accompanies the treatment and never replaces it. Always follow the doctor's guidance.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Zé Pilintra Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    High and lively flame, dancing

Many houses read the animated flame as a sign that Seu Zé received the candle with pleasure. It is the expected burning of a joyful spirit guide of movement.

  • Good sign

Clean glass until the end of the burning

In the common reading, the request proceeded without obstacle. The path was open and the candle burned calmly during the seven days.

  • Attention

    Black glass from soot

It is usually read as heavy load being burned, envy or a spiritual attack (demanda) in the path. Repeat the candle after a ritual bath of guiné, and if it continues, seek a terreiro.

  • Attention

    Low flame that almost disappears

Ask to review the request. Sometimes it is not clear, or it is not fair to someone. Talk to Seu Zé again, with more frankness, before lighting another.

  • Observe

    Glass that cracks or bursts

First check the surface heat and the air current. Many houses read it as a break of something contrary, but without confirmation it is only worth replacing the glass and moving on.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Zé Pilintra Candle

What is the Zé Pilintra Candle for?

To ask for protection on the street, to see clearly who is false, to seek justice when you were deceived and to find an honest way out of a tight spot. It is also lit by the sick, remembering the master healer of Jurema, and to give thanks. It is not for imprisoning a person nor for harming anyone.

What is the best day to light the Zé Pilintra candle?

Monday is the most common, as it is the day when many houses care for the povo da rua. There are terreiros that prefer Friday. The festive date is July 7, Zé Pelintra Day in Rio, and some houses celebrate on October 28. Follow the custom of your house.

Is Zé Pilintra an Exu or another line?

He is another line: Seu Zé is a malandro in Umbanda and a master in Jurema. Since he works near the left, there are houses that receive him in the gira de exu, some treat the malandros as a subtype of exu and others give them their own gira. The confusion comes from the same demonization that hit both. Who defines his place is your house.

Can I light a Zé Pilintra candle at home if I am not from a terreiro?

You can, with respect and a just request. Many people light it out of devotion, without being a medium. What remains for the terreiro is the firmeza with foundation, such as assentamento, offering with drink and work of incorporação, which depend on the guidance of the leader of the house.

Can I blow out the Zé Pilintra candle before it finishes?

The correct way is to let the votiva burn for seven days. If you are traveling or cannot watch it, smother the flame with a saucer, without blowing, and light it again upon returning, informing Seu Zé. Blowing is understood as undoing the request with your own breath.

What is the difference between the Zé Pilintra candle and the red and white one?

The color is the same, but the votiva brings the label of Seu Zé and is already born dedicated to him. The plain bicolor can go to Xangô (Shango), to Ogum, or to the malandro, depending on how you consecrate it at the moment. In the absence of the votiva, the plain one works, by stating who it is for.

What to do with the leftover candle and the drink?

The beer or the water from the glass goes to the ground or to the gutter, never for the person who lit it to drink. The rest of the wax and the glass go to the trash, wrapped in paper. If your house requires a despacho in the street, do as the zelador instructs.
