The Vovó Benta candle is for those who need to hear a truth spoken with affection. It bears the label of this Preta Velha and the two colors of the line: white at the top, which speaks of peace, and black at the bottom, which speaks of the earth that receives what is heavy. It stays on the home congá, at the Almas point of the terreiro, or on the bedside table of someone trying to change their life and does not know where to start.

Vovó Benta is the name of a falange (spiritual legion), and each terreiro knows its own. The name also became known through the books of Umbanda stories attributed to her, in which the Preta Velha recounts consultations given in the gira and insists on a simple idea: she teaches how to fish, she does not hand over the fish. Like the other Pretos Velhos, she works under the Almas, which many houses link to Obaluaê and others to Oxalá (Obatala). Monday is her day.

At home, do not expect a shortcut from this candle. Vovó Benta does not solve for you what is yours to solve. What her flame does is sit beside you while you look inside, recognize the error without sinking into it, and take the first different step, even if small, still this week.

What is it for

What the Vovó Benta Candle Is For

The Vovó Benta candle is white on top and black at the bottom, the colors that Umbanda gives to the Pretos Velhos. It is lit to ask for advice, patience, the courage to change a habit, and calm after a heavy day, under the line of the Almas.

  • A sincere piece of advice at a crossroads

When two choices seem equal and you no longer trust your own judgment. Light it, tell everything, and sleep on it. Many people say clarity arrives the next morning.

  • Courage to let go of a habit that does harm

For those who want to stop drinking, spending too much, or always returning to the same fight. The candle does not remove the will alone, but steadies the purpose on the most difficult days.

  • Patience with myself and with those who live with me

In the phase where everything irritates and the response comes out sharp. Ask Vovó Benta for the calm of someone who has seen many things and knows that almost nothing needs to be resolved by shouting.

  • Peaceful sleep after a heavy day

Lit at night with a glass of water nearby, it helps let the head rest. It is good for those who arrive home burdened from work and cannot switch off.

  • To thank a Preta Velha who helped

If Vovó Benta gave a consultation to you in a gira and the advice worked, the candle is the simplest way to return and say thank you, along with a freshly brewed coffee.

    Vovó Benta

Preta Velha of advice and inner reform

The label is hers and the prayer request goes in her name. Vovó Benta is remembered for teaching without giving ready answers: she listens, tells a story, and returns the question. The candle asks for this same honesty from the one who lights it.

  • Illustration of Obaluaê in sacred art

    Obaluaê

Lord of the earth and of the line of the Almas

A large part of houses place the Pretos Velhos under the irradiation of the Almas, which belongs to Obaluaê. The black at the base of the candle is his earth, which guards, transforms, and returns what it receives healed.

    Oxalá

Pai of peace, of the white cloth, and of charity

Other terreiros place the Pretos Velhos in the vibration of Oxalá, for the peace and charity they teach. It is the white at the top of the candle. The leadership of the line changes from house to house.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the Vovó Benta candle for counsel and patience

“Adorei as Almas! My Vovó Benta, I light this light and pull a small stool near you. I do not come to ask that you do for me, I come to ask that you help me to see. Show me where I always stumble on the same stone. Give me the courage to change what is mine to change and the humility to accept what is not. Put patience on my tongue before it hurts someone. When I want to give up, remember that one day at a time is also a path. Receive this bitter coffee, which is simple as you like, and stay with me this night. May I wake up lighter and wiser than when I lay down. Hail the blessed Almas. Adorei as Almas!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Vovó Benta Candle

  1. 1

Choose a low corner of the house

Preta Velha likes to stay near the floor. The foot of the congá, a small stool, or a low table in the bedroom serve, as long as it is away from curtains and out of the children's path.

  2. 2

    Serve the coffee before lighting

Brew a fresh coffee and leave the cup next to the saucer, with the glass of water on the other side. For the Pretos Velhos, the offering comes before the prayer request, like a visit arriving at a grandmother's house.

  3. 3

Speak of the problem without hiding

With the candle between your hands, tell what is happening and your part in it. Vovó Benta does not like complaints that only blame others. Say your name and hers.

  4. 4

    Light and say the prayer

Light it with a match, place the rue sprig at the foot of the saucer and pray. Then stay quiet for a few minutes, thinking about the first step you can take tomorrow. That step is the answer.

  5. 5

    Close the week with respect

Do not blow out the flame. Upon finishing, the coffee and water go to the soil of a pot or the backyard, the dry rue goes with them, and the leftover wax goes to the trash wrapped in paper.

Precautions before lighting

  • The 7-day candle stays lit through the nights: use a deep saucer, away from sheets and curtains, and do not leave the house empty for long with it burning.
  • Vovó Benta is a spirit guide of charity. Do not ask her to change anyone's will or for someone to suffer; her work is with you, not against others.
  • Consultation, spiritual pass, and guidance with foundation are with the Preta Velha incorporated in a medium, in the gira, under the house's zelador. The candle at home is prayer and company.
  • If the habit you want to quit is an addiction or if exhaustion turned into a sadness that does not pass, also seek medical and psychological help. The candle accompanies, it does not replace.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Vovó Benta Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    Gentle flame, no rush

It is the way almost every Preta Velha candle burns. Many houses read it as an accepted conversation and work running in the right time, without rushing.

  • Good sign

A flame that grows when you pray

Some read the rising flame during the prayer as the close presence of Preta Velha. Take the moment to make the request with calm and sincerity.

  • Attention

Black smoke in the first hours

It is usually read as an old weight being burned. Change the water in the glass, pray again and, if the smoke returns in several candles, seek a trusted terreiro.

  • Attention

A candle that goes out in the middle of the week

Check the wind and the wick first. If everything is correct, some houses understand it as a request that still needs to be redone. Relight it and think about what you left unsaid.

  • Observe

Melted wax in a smooth puddle

It is the normal behavior of the 7-day candle in a place without a draft. There is no special reading in this: it is only a sign that the candle is burning well.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Vovó Benta Candle

What is the Vovó Benta candle for?

To ask for advice, patience, and courage to change a habit or an attitude. It is a candle for inner reform: it accompanies your effort, it does not do the work for you. It also serves to give thanks for a consultation with Vovó Benta that helped.

Who is Vovó Benta in Umbanda?

She is a Preta Velha, a name of a spiritual legion (falange) that appears in many terreiros, each with its own Vovó Benta. She also became known through the books Causos de Umbanda, in which the reports of consultations are attributed to her. The most remembered trait is teaching the person to solve, instead of solving for them.

What is the best day to light a candle for Vovó Benta?

Monday, which is the day of the Pretos Velhos and the souls in most houses. On the annual date, May 13, many terreiros hold a gira and party for the line. If the need is urgent on another day, light it with the same respect.

What is the difference between the Vovó Benta candle and the black and white candle?

The colors are the same. The black and white candle consecrates the line of the souls in general. The Vovó Benta one has her label and takes the prayer request directly to the Preta Velha, which makes sense for those who have already been helped by her or feel affinity with her way.

Can you light a Preta Velha candle inside the house?

You can. A candle for Preto Velho is one of the most common in a domestic congá. Choose a low, clean, and safe place, with coffee and water nearby. The assentamento, obligations, and foundational work stay with the terreiro and its leader.

Can I blow out Vovó Benta's candle before it finishes?

Only if necessary, and without blowing. If you are going to be out for many hours, smother the flame with a saucer and relight it when you return, repeating the prayer request. Many houses teach that the breath undoes the prayer with the very breath of the one who made the request.
