The Ogum candle is the votive of the warrior orixá (orisha): a cup candle with his image on the label, made for those who want to know exactly who they are lighting. It usually enters a home in a moment of hardship, when a job disappears, a business stalls, or it seems like someone is crossing your path. It serves the initiate (filho de santo) and also those who only have devotion to Saint George and have never been to a gira.

Ogum is the orixá who masters iron and who, according to myth, opened the closed forest with his machete for the other orixás to pass. His day is Tuesday and his greeting is Ogunhê. The color changes from house to house: in Ketu Candomblé his beads are dark blue, sometimes with green; in Umbanda, due to the connection with Saint George in the Southeast, red and red with white are the most common. Therefore, this candle uses the Ketu blue, and the Umbanda house that prefers can light the red one.

In daily life, it asks for the posture of someone who is going to work, not someone who waits sitting down. Ogum helps open the door, but the one who crosses is you. It is not a candle to take down a competitor or to retaliate against an offense: his sword cuts what blocks, not who bothers.

What is it for

What is the Ogum Candle for

The Ogum candle features the label of the iron orixá on the dark blue body. It is lit on Tuesday by those who need to unblock their work, cut envy and evil eye, gain courage for a just fight, and follow protected on the road.

  • Unlock employment and business

A resume that doesn't return, a client who disappeared, a promotion that never happens. Light the candle on a Tuesday and go knock on the door: Ogum opens the way for those who move.

  • Cut envy and evil eye

When everything starts going wrong at once and you feel the weight of another person over your life, Ogum's sword is called upon to cut that load and clear the road.

  • Strength in a just cause

For a lawsuit, a collection, or a dispute in which you are in the right. The candle asks for firmeza and clarity to fight, and Ogum only walks with those who act with righteousness.

  • Protection for those who hit the road

Truck drivers, motorcycle couriers, app drivers, and those who travel a lot usually leave the Ogum candle lit at home, asking for a round trip without accidents or setbacks.

  • Courage to start over

After a dismissal, the end of a partnership, or a big defeat, the blacksmith's fire helps put the pieces together and return to the fight with an open heart.

The candle carries his label and responds to his domain: iron, work, just war, and an open path. Tuesday is the day of Ogum, and the dark blue of the candle body is the color of his beads in Ketu.

Prayer to light

Ogum candle prayer to open the path

“Ogum, lord of iron and the forge, here is my candle and here I am, standing. I do not come to ask that you carry me: I come to ask that you go ahead. Where the brush has closed, pass your machete. Where envy tied my door, cut with your sword the knot that binds me and leave the road clean. Give my arm the disposition for service and my mouth the courage to speak when necessary. Guard my steps on the street, on the bus, and on the road, by day and by night. If the fight is just, stay by my side; if I am wrong, show me before I fall. Patakori, Ogum! Ogunhê, my Pai!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Ogum Candle

  1. 1

Take a ritual bath before lighting

On Tuesday morning, after your hygiene bath, pour a guinea hen weed or pepper tree ritual bath from the neck down. Ogum likes those who arrive clean and ready for the ritual work.

  2. 2

Arrange the spot near the entrance

Ogum is the guardian of the door and the path. A table or shelf near the house entrance works well. Place the plate, the sword-of-Saint-George leaf (folha de espada), and the iron object beside it.

  3. 3

Look at the statue and say your name

With the candle in your hand and the label facing you, say your full name and the struggle you are facing. Be direct: Ogum understands a short prayer request better than a speech.

  4. 4

    Light and greet the warrior

Strike the match, light the wick, and say Ogunhê. Perform the prayer and leave the glass of water next to the plate during the entire burning, to receive what is being cut.

  5. 5

Fulfill your part during the week

While the candle burns, do what depends on you: send the resume, call the client, resolve the overdue paperwork. The candle accompanies the effort, it does not take its place.

  6. 6

    Close the firmeza with respect

Do not blow. When the flame ends, pour the water into a garden bed, keep the key or the nail as a reminder of the prayer request, and throw the leftover wax in the trash, wrapped.

Precautions before lighting

  • 7-day candle burns for several consecutive days: support on an agate or ceramic plate, away from curtains and wooden furniture, out of reach of children and pets.
  • Ogum is the orixá of justice and loyalty. Using his candle to harm a colleague, neighbor, or ex is against the very foundation of the orixá.
  • Ogum's consecrated foundation (assentamento), consecrated tool, and obrigação are done inside the terreiro, by the hand of the zelador. The candle at home is devotion and does not replace this.
  • In legal matters or debt, the candle moves along with the lawyer, the contract, and the frank conversation. It provides strength, but it does not solve on its own what is on paper.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Candle of Ogum shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

Firm and high flame from the beginning

Many houses read this as a sign that Ogum accepted the candle and that the path is clear for you to proceed. Maintain the effort that the flame accompanies.

  • Good sign

Short pops in the middle of the burning

In terreiro custom, a pop in a candle of Ogum is read as a cut: something stuck is being broken. If the flame calms down afterward, the reading is good.

  • Attention

    Flame divided into two tips

Some read this as a divided path or a decision still open. Before acting, think calmly about the two options and, if the doubt weighs heavy, ask for guidance.

  • Attention

    Cracked or burst glass

It could just be too much heat or weak glass. There are those who read it as a strong demanda being broken. Clean everything, light another candle and, if it repeats, seek a terreiro.

  • Observe

Flame that takes a long time to catch

A damp or short wick is the most common cause. Remove the wax around it and try again. If the flame remains weak for days, reinforce the prayer on the following Tuesday.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Ogum Candle

What is the color of the Ogum candle?

It depends on the house. In Ketu Candomblé, Ogum wears dark blue and sometimes green, and that is the color of his votive candle. In Umbanda, especially in the Southeast, where he is linked to Saint George, the most common is red or red with white. Both forms are of fundamento: follow the custom of your terreiro.

What is the Ogum Candle for?

To open a path at work, cut envy and spiritual attacks (demanda), ask for courage and strength in a just cause, and protection for those who walk on the street or on the road. It is the candle of someone who is in a fight and wants the orixá of iron going ahead.

What is the best day to light a candle for Ogum?

Tuesday, his day, preferably early in the morning. April 23, the day of Saint George, is widely celebrated in the Umbanda of the Southeast and is also a good day. In case of urgency, the candle can be lit on another day, with the same respect.

Can I blow out the Ogum candle and light it again?

You can, but without blowing. Smother the flame with a metal lid or a spoon and relight it when you return, repeating the greeting. It is best to let the candle finish on its own, in a safe place where it can stay lit.

What is the difference between the Ogum candle and the dark blue candle?

The color is the same, but the Ogum candle brings the image of the orixá on the label and is already dedicated to him. The plain dark blue one can be consecrated to Ogum or another force of the same color, as you say when lighting it. For those who want to dedicate it only to Ogum, the votive candle is more direct.

Can I light an Ogum candle at home without being initiated in a terreiro?

You can. Lighting a candle for Ogum asking for strength and protection is devotion, open to anyone with respect. What belongs inside the terreiro, such as assentamento and obrigação, stays with the zelador da casa.

What to do with the Ogum candle cup after it finishes?

The water that remained next to it goes into the soil of a pot or garden bed. The leftover wax, with the label, can be wrapped and put in the common trash. If the glass is intact, some people wash and reuse it at home, away from the altar.
