Those looking for the Logunedé candle have almost always heard of the prince of the orixás (orishas), but do not know exactly how to light his candle. It comes in two colors, turquoise-blue and gold-yellow, divided horizontally, with the orixá label. It is a worship candle more closely linked to the Candomblé of the ketu nation, and today it also reaches the congá of many Umbanda houses that learned to revere the son of Oxum (Oshun).

The foundation is in his own history. Tradition says that Logunedé spends half the year in the forest, hunting with Oxóssi (Oshosi), and the other half in the river, fishing alongside Oxum. Therefore, the turquoise recalls fresh water and the gold recalls the wealth of the mother and the abundance that the father brings from the hunt. Thursday, the day of Oxóssi, is the most common date for the candle, and some houses prefer the Saturday of the iabás. One rule repeats: no brown or red near him.

At home, the Logunedé candle asks for care and lightness. He is young, vain, and detests lies, so it works best with an honest prayer request, a beautiful altar, and a sincere heart. It is not for binding anyone or for revenge: its purpose is to give shine, open space for youth, and help reconcile what seems not to fit together.

What is it for

What is the purpose of the Logunedé Candle

The Logunedé candle carries the turquoise of Oxum's waters and the golden yellow of abundance. It is lit for the young orixá, son of Oxóssi and Oxum, when asking for charisma, sustenance, courage to start something, and balance between opposite sides of life.

  • Have more charisma and a good presence

Before an interview, a presentation, or an important meeting, the candle asks the prince to lend his charm and let you feel comfortable to show yourself.

  • Balance work and emotional life

Logunedé lives between the forest and the river without abandoning either. Light it when one part of life is swallowing the other and you need an adjustment.

  • Ask for sustenance and abundance at home

Heir to the hunter and the owner of gold, he is called when the basics are missing or when money arrives and escapes. The candle helps to ask with feet on the ground.

  • Protect young people and those who are starting

For a teenage child, a student leaving home, or someone going to their first job. The young orixá takes care of those who are still learning to hunt their own path.

  • Inspire creative and artistic projects

Musicians, artists, and those who work with beauty usually light his candle before launching a work, asking for inspiration and that the work finds its audience.

The candle is entirely his: turquoise and gold are the colors of his bead necklace (fio de contas), Thursday is the day he shares with the father, and his symbols join the hunter's ofá to the mother's abebé.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the Logunedé candle to the prince of the forest and of the river

“Logunedé, boy of gold, son of the hunter and of the lady of the waterfalls, accept this light that I light with respect. You who cross from the forest to the river without losing your way, teach me to walk between my own halves without breaking. Give my face the glow of one who has nothing to hide, because I know that lies displease you. Put in my hand the aim of your father so I may hit what I seek, and in my chest the sweetness of your mother so I do not harden on the path. May the fish and the hunt never lack on my table, and may the youth that lives in you renew my courage. Loci-loci, Logunedé!”

Step by step

How to set the Logunedé Candle

  1. 1

Set up a nice little corner

Cover the table with a light cloth and leave everything tidy. Logunedé is vain: a beautiful, clean altar with flowers is the first way to show that the prayer request is serious.

  2. 2

Join the water and the green

Place the water on one side and the green branch on the other, with the candle in the middle. It is the image of the orixá between the mother's river and the father's forest, each in its place.

  3. 3

Hold the candle and speak the truth

Pass the candle through your hands and speak the prayer request as it is, without decoration. Before one who hates lies, a clear prayer request is worth more than many beautiful words.

  4. 4

    Light and greet the prince

Light it with a match, say Loci-loci, Logunedé (in many houses the greeting is Logun ô) and say the prayer. Offer the thread of honey next to the plate, asking that life becomes sweeter from now on.

  5. 5

Keep it burning without blowing it out

The 7-day candle stays lit in a safe place until it finishes. Do not blow it out. At the end, the flowers and the honey go to the earth of a garden and the water can be poured into a vase.

Precautions before lighting

  • The 7-day candle stays lit for a long time. Leave it on a ceramic plate, away from curtains, fabric, and out of reach of children and animals.
  • Avoid brown and red on the Logunedé altar: tradition says he does not like these colors. Quizila details vary, so confirm with your house.
  • Assentamento, initiation, and obrigação for Logunedé are done inside the terreiro, with the zelador. The candle at home is for prayer and devotion, it does not replace that.
  • Do not use the candle to deceive or bind someone. With an orixá who detests lies, a request that harms another person's will has no place.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Logunedé Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    High, golden flame without trembling

It is usually read as a request well received and a clear path. It is the sign expected when the altar is in order and the candle burns away from the wind.

  • Observe

    Wax dripping from both sides

Some houses read the divided wax as the duality of the orixá itself showing. Most of the time, however, it is just the candle burning on a crooked surface.

  • Attention

Flame oscillating between high and low

It can indicate indecision from the one who made the request, as if the heart were in two places. It is worth reviewing the request calmly and repeating the candle on the following Thursday.

  • Attention

    Darkened glass or dense smoke

Many houses understand that there was weight in the environment. If the darkening repeats several times, speak with the zelador of a trusted terreiro.

  • Observe

    Wick drowned in wax

Before drawing conclusions, see if the wick is short or if the candle is of good quality. Remove the excess wax carefully and light it again.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Logunedé Candle

What is the color of the Logunedé candle?

Turquoise blue and gold yellow. The turquoise represents the fresh waters of Oxum and the gold yellow joins the mother's gold to the abundance of the father, Oxóssi. In the absence of the two-color candle, some houses use a turquoise and a yellow one side by side, or consecrate a white one for him.

What is the best day to light a candle for Logunedé?

Thursday, which he shares with Oxóssi in most houses. There are terreiros that prefer Saturday, the day of the iabás, because of Oxum. It is also common to light it on April 19, the date of Saint Expedite, a saint with whom some houses practice syncretism.

Can I light Logunedé's candle at home without being initiated in a terreiro?

You can, as a prayer and devotion. Lighting a candle with respect does not require initiation. What requires a terreiro is worship with foundation, such as assentamento and obrigação. If you feel a strong affinity with him, it is worth looking for a Candomblé house to understand better.

Can I blow out Logunedé's candle before it finishes?

The ideal is not to blow it out. The 7-day candle was made to stay lit until the end in a safe place. If it is indispensable, smother the flame with a saucer or a spoon, without blowing, and relight it as soon as you can, repeating the greeting.

What is the difference between Logunedé's candle and Oxum's candle?

Oxum's candle is yellow and speaks of love, beauty, and prosperity through the waters. Logunedé's candle adds turquoise and also brings the father's forest: it is more indicated for youth, charisma, balance between opposites, and projects that are starting.

What to do with the flowers, the honey, and the leftover wax?

Flowers and honey return to nature, in the earth of a garden or a large pot. The water can water a plant. The glass cup of the 7-day candle is washed and can go to recycling, and the leftover wax goes to the common trash wrapped up.

Logunedé is syncretized with which saint?

The most common is Saint Expedite, celebrated on April 19. Some houses associate Logunedé with Saint Michael Archangel and others with Saint Bartholomew. The correspondence changes from region to region, and syncretism does not make the orixá and the saint the same figure.
