The Exu Veludo candle is sought by those who have a problem that cannot be solved by shouting. A stalled negotiation, a boss who does not listen, a social environment full of smiling and envious people. Veludo is a falange of the povo de rua, worshipped in Quimbanda and in the gira de esquerda of Umbanda, and his fame is that of refined dealings: where another guardian cuts, he convinces.

The name comes from two coexisting accounts. One speaks of the velvety voice, polished even when saying hard things; the other, of the turbans and velvet fabrics with which the falange presents itself. Monday is the day of the povo de Exu, and Veludo's point of strength is usually by the riverbank and at the crossroads. The regency divides the houses: some place him near Oxum (Oshun), others under Ogum (Ogun), and who decides is the fundamento of your terreiro.

At home, this candle asks for the same place as any left-hand firmeza: near the entrance, away from the bedroom and the altar of the orixás (orishas). It does not serve to bend anyone's will. Veludo opens conversation and protects whoever speaks, but what the other person decides continues to be theirs.

What is it for

What is the purpose of the Exu Veludo Candle

Red and black are the colors of the povo de rua, and Exu Veludo is the guardian who works with the soft word. His candle is lit before a difficult conversation, to protect the personal image, ward off envy disguised as friendship, and ask for tact where force does not resolve.

  • To have tact in a difficult negotiation

Light it on the eve of a meeting, an agreement, or a conversation that might turn sour. The prayer request is for the right word and an open ear from the other side, without forcing anyone.

  • To cut the evil eye over an achievement

New promotion, a business that grew, a renovated house. When victory attracts a sharp comment, the candle asks Veludo to guard what you achieved away from envy.

  • To unmask fake people nearby

For the work or friendship environment where someone smiles to your face and speaks behind your back. The prayer request is to see clearly who is who and to distance yourself with elegance.

  • To set the personal image and presence

Before an interview, a presentation, or an event where you need to be seen. Veludo is the guardian of magnetism, and the candle asks for posture and confidence when it is time to speak.

  • To calm a conflicting environment

When the fight at home or in the team has gone too far, the candle asks for tempers to cool and for conversation to become possible again. The first step to yielding remains up to each individual.

    Exu Veludo

The guardian of the soft word

The candle is his before anything else: the label, the red and black of the povo de rua and Monday night. Veludo is called when the path depends on conversation, on image and on diplomacy, and not on brute force.

    Oxum

Lady of the sweet waters and of enchantment

A line of houses places Veludo among the messengers closest to Oxum. From there comes the riverbank as a point of strength and his fame in causes of beauty, seduction and personal image.

Lord of iron and open paths

Another line sets Veludo under Ogum, next to Xangô (Shango) and Oxóssi (Oshosi). This reading explains his firmeza in sustaining a demanda and opening a path. The houses diverge, and the two readings coexist.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the candle of Exu Veludo to the guardian of the fine deal

“Lord Exu Veludo, I light this red and black light in your name this Monday. You who know how to speak where others scream, lend to my mouth the right word and to my ear the patience to listen. Cover with your mantle what I conquered with effort, so that the long eye of those who envy me slips and does not find where to land. Show who wants me well and who only pretends, and give me elegance to distance myself without a fight. I do not ask you for anyone's evil nor for mastery over the will of others. I ask for tact, protection and an open path. Receive this candle as a sign of my respect, and I will return to thank you. Laroyê, Exu Veludo! Exu is Mojubá!”

Step by step

How to set the Candle of Exu Veludo

  1. 1

    Wait until Monday night

Veludo is from the povo de rua, who works after it gets dark. If the request is for a scheduled meeting, set it on the previous Monday, so the candle can accompany the days until the conversation.

  2. 2

Set up the ponto near the entrance

Clay saucer on the floor, in a low corner near the door, in the outdoor area or at the tronqueira. Outside the bedroom and far from the altar of the orixás, because the left side guards the threshold.

  3. 3

    Arrange the offering with distance

The whiskey glass stays a palm's length from the flame, because strong drinks catch fire. The red rose and the cigar, if your house usually offers it, go next to it, never touching the wick.

  4. 4

Ask for permission and say his name

Before the match, announce in a low voice that the candle is for Exu Veludo. On the left, saying who the light is for is part of the tradition, and calling the guardian by name is a sign of respect.

  5. 5

    State your request clearly

Veludo is a diplomat, but he likes a request made plainly. Say what the matter is, what gain needs protecting, and what you offer in gratitude. Then do exactly what you said.

  6. 6

    Finish without blowing

Let the candle burn completely; if you need to leave, smother it with another saucer and relight it later. At the end, the drink goes to the earth outside the house and the leftover wax, wrapped, goes to the trash.

Precautions before lighting

  • Whiskey, cachaça, and perfume catch fire. Keep the glass away from the flame, the saucer firm on the ground, and never leave the candle lit alone or within reach of children and animals.
  • Firmeza in the house is one thing; an Exu assentamento is another and requires initiation. For tronqueira and assentamento, the one who guides you is the zelador of your terreiro.
  • Veludo opens conversation, he does not take away anyone's will. Do not light this candle to bind a person, force an agreement, or harm whoever negotiates with you.
  • If you promised a gift to the guardian, deliver it. If you cannot give it, do not offer it: on the left, a kept word is worth more than the most expensive drink.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Exu Veludo Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    Firm flame, of constant height

Many houses read the serene flame as a sign that the guardian accepted the firmeza and is conducting the request in his own time, without rushing.

  • Observe

Flame that dances slowly, without wind

For a candle of deals and conversation, the slow sway is usually read as movement. Before any reading, check if there is a draft.

  • Attention

Wax dripping to only one side

Some houses read this as a point of a request still stuck. Think if there is something unresolved with someone and relight it on the following Monday with the simplest request.

  • Attention

Dark smoke and soot on the saucer

Check beforehand if the wick is not too long. If that is not it, many houses read it as spiritual load being burned: a cleansing bath (banho de descarrego) and a new candle solve it.

  • Good sign

Candle that burns clean until the end

A complete burn without residue is read as a finished work. It is time to thank Veludo and fulfill the promised offering (agrado) without delay.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Exu Veludo candle

What is the Exu Veludo candle for?

It is used to request favor in situations that depend on conversation: negotiation, meeting, reconciliation, interview. It is also lit to protect an achievement from the evil eye and to keep away fake people. It is the candle of the guardian who works with diplomacy, not with force.

Is Exu Veludo from Oxum or from Ogum?

It depends on the house. One line places Veludo among the messengers closest to Oxum, which explains the riverbank and the fame in matters of image. Another settles him under Ogum. Neither is wrong, and whoever defines the regency is the foundation of your terreiro.

What is the best day to light the Exu Veludo candle?

Monday night, which is the day of the people of Exu in most houses. If the prayer request is for a scheduled meeting, light the 7-day candle on the previous Monday. Some houses settle the left side on other days; if you attend a terreiro, follow the custom there.

What is the difference between the Exu Veludo candle and the common red and black one?

The colors are the same, but the candle with the label is directed to a specific guardian. The common red and black consecrates the left side in a general way, at the front door. The Veludo one calls the falange by name, for requests regarding conversation, personal image, and disguised envy.

Can I light the Exu Veludo candle inside the house?

You can, in the right place: near the front door, on the floor or in a low corner, or in an outdoor area. Not in the bedroom and not next to the orixás. In an apartment, the corner by the door works, always with a firm saucer and the drink glass away from the flame.

Can I blow out the Exu Veludo candle and light it again later?

You can, as long as you do not blow it out. Smother the flame with a saucer or a spoon and relight it when you return, saying again that the candle is for Exu Veludo. For the 7-day candle, it is best to choose from the start a spot where it can burn without pausing.

What should I do with the whiskey and the leftover candle?

The drink goes to the earth outside the house, in a flowerbed or garden, never down the kitchen drain. The withered rose returns to nature. The cup and the leftover wax go into the trash wrapped in paper. Do not reuse the drink for another ritual.
