Exu (Eshu) Tiriri candle
Swift guardian of the crossroads, for heavy cleansing and an unlocked path
Exu Tiriri candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Those seeking the Exu Tiriri candle have usually already tried the salt bath, light smoke cleansing (defumação), and the usual prayer, and feel that the burden remains in the same place. Tiriri is known for fast work and a deep cleansing. The candle carries his label and the colors red and black, and is set in Umbanda, in the left-hand gira, and in Quimbanda, where he appears as the head of a spiritual legion (falange) of guardians.
Tiriri is not just one person: it is the name of an entire spiritual legion (falange) of Exus who work in the same mystery. Some houses write Tiriri Lonan, and some say Tibiriri. Tradition tells that he undoes what is heavy by blowing the smoke of the cigar, and that his point of strength is the earthen crossroads. Monday, the day of the people of Exu, is the most used date. There are terreiros that place him working under the irradiation of Ogum (Ogun); others do not make this connection, and both readings coexist.
At home, the Tiriri candle asks for the same respect as any firmeza of the left. It stays outside, near the gate or in a tronqueira, never in the bedroom or on the altar of the orixás (orishas). It also has limits: it is not for revenge, for trapping someone, nor for demanding from those who owe nothing. The serious guardian cuts what was commanded and restores balance, without causing harm upon request.
What is it for
What is the purpose of the Exu Tiriri Candle
Red on top and black on the bottom, the candle of Exu Tiriri carries the colors of the povo de rua and the label of one of the most sought after falange chiefs of the left. It is lit to discharge stuck energy, break a spiritual attack (demanda), and request that a stalled path starts moving again.
-
Remove an energy that does not leave with anything
Fatigue without reason, a heavy house, a fight that arises from nothing. When a light cleaning no longer solves it, the candle requests that Tiriri discharge what remained stuck on the person or in the environment.
-
Break a spiritual attack (demanda) and ritual work sent against you
It is the request most linked to his name. The candle calls the guardian to undo what was sent against you and send it back to the earth, without wishing harm on whoever sent it.
-
Answer for an urgent matter
Tiriri has a reputation for acting quickly. For a tight deadline or a decision that cannot wait, the candle requests movement. It does not replace your effort nor set a date for anything.
-
Big eye at work
A colleague who hinders, an environment of dispute, envy of the position or the counter. The candle requests protection to work in peace and steadiness to not enter into others' fights.
-
Unlock stuck money
Payment that does not arrive, a client who disappears, a business that stagnated. The request is for the flow to run again. Organizing the accounts and collecting from those who owe continues to be your task.

Prayer to light
Exu Tiriri candle prayer for cleansing and protection
“Lord Exu Tiriri, guardian of the crossroads, I light this candle with respect and with the clean word. I ask permission from the people of the street to reach you. What was sent against me, cut and return to the earth, without anyone needing to suffer for it. What is stuck on my body and in my house, blow away with the smoke of your cigar. Open the path that is stuck and close the door to those who arrive with bad intentions. I do not ask for anyone's evil, I only ask that order returns. I fulfill what I promise and return to give thanks. Laroyê, Exu Tiriri! Exu is Mojubá!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to set the Exu Tiriri Candle
- 1
Ask permission from Exu before
Before calling any guardian, greet Exu and the povo de rua with a Laroyê. It is a custom of almost every house: whoever arrives without asking permission starts the ritual work on the wrong foot.
- 2
Firmeza on the outside
The place for the Tiriri candle is near the gate, in a corner of the backyard or at the tronqueira, if the house has one. Far from the altar of the orixás, from the bedroom, and from anything that catches fire.
- 3
Cross the candle in your hands
Hold the candle and pass your hands from the wick to the base, as if taking something away from yourself. At that moment, say what needs to be cut, with the name of the subject and without beating around the bush.
- 4
Light and serve the marafo
Light it with a match, leave the glass of cachaça next to the saucer, and say the prayer. Tiriri likes direct words: ask for one thing at a time and say what you offer in exchange.
- 5
Extinguish without blowing out the flame
Let the candle burn until the end. If you need to smother it, use a saucer. Afterwards, the cachaça goes to the earth and the leftover wax goes wrapped in the trash, away from the front door.
Precautions before lighting
- The candle stays outside, but never without supervision: away from dry grass, curtains, and out of reach of children and animals. Use a firm saucer on a floor that does not burn.
- Tiriri does not work for revenge nor to bind someone's will. Whoever promises this in his name is selling a shortcut, not foundation.
- Assentamento and obrigação of Exu require a house and initiation. At home, what is done is simple firmeza; the rest is with the zelador of your terreiro.
- Fulfill what you offered. Exu values a given word, and promising a lot without delivering wears down the relationship with the guardian.
- Fatigue that does not pass and malaise in the body require a medical consultation. The candle accompanies the treatment and never replaces the guidance of your doctor.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Exu Tiriri Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High flame that rises quickly
Many houses read the live flame right at the beginning as the guardian accepting the request. It matches the reputation for speed that Tiriri carries.
- Observe
Crackling flame that releases sparks
In popular reading, it is a sign of ritual work in progress, the charge being burned. There is no need to move the candle: let it burn and keep a safe distance from any fabric.
- Attention
Black smoke and a lot of soot
It usually indicates that there was a great weight to clear. If the soot repeats in several consecutive candles, it is worth seeking a terreiro for guidance.
- Observe
Wax dripping from only one side
Before any reading, check if the candle is straight and away from the wind. Many times it is just a draft coming from the gate or the window.
- Attention
Candle that goes out right at the beginning
It may call for a clearer request or a calmer day. Check the wick and wind, salute Exu again and light it again; if it persists, speak with a zelador.
Ritual bath and smoke cleansing (defumação)
Herbs that combine with the Candle of Exu Tiriri
-
Rue
Ruta graveolens
Cutting herb of the street people (povo de rua). A sprig next to the saucer or a ritual bath of rue from the neck down before lighting helps release what weighs on you.
See the herb -
guiné / Tipi
Petiveria alliacea
Strong protection leaf, very much used on the left. A branch behind the door while the candle burns reinforces the request for house protection.
See the herb -
Tobacco leaf
Nicotiana tabacum
Reminds one of the cigar of Tiriri. A punctual smoke cleansing of tobacco leaf, with the house open, accompanies the candle in cases of very heavy charge.
See the herb -
Malagueta pepper
Capsicum frutescens
Exu pepper, hot and of movement. Some houses leave some peppers in the saucer next to the candle; never use in the ritual bath or on the skin.

Questions about the Exu Tiriri candle
What is the Exu Tiriri candle for?
It serves for heavy spiritual cleansing, breaking a demanda, and for unlocking stalled matters, such as work and money. Tiriri is known as a fast and firm guardian. The candle does not perform a miracle with a deadline: it accompanies the prayer request and your own effort.
What is the best day to light the Exu Tiriri candle?
Monday, which is the day of the people of Exu in most houses, preferably after it gets dark. If the need is urgent, many people light it on another day, greeting Exu first. The orientation of your house is worth more than any table.
Can I light the Exu Tiriri candle inside the house?
The custom is no. Firmeza of the left stays outside, near the gate, in the backyard, or in the tronqueira. If you live in an apartment, a service area near the door works, always far from the altar of the orixás and with fire safety.
Can I blow out the Tiriri candle and light it again?
The ideal is to let it burn until the end. If necessary, smother it with a saucer, without blowing, and relight it as soon as you can, repeating the greeting. Blowing is seen in many houses as undoing the prayer request with your own breath.
What to do with the cachaça and the leftover wax?
The cachaça from the glass is poured onto the ground, in a garden bed or at the foot of a tree, and the glass is washed. The leftover wax is wrapped in paper for the common trash, outside the house. Do not keep the leftover or reuse it in another ritual work.
What is the difference between the Exu Tiriri candle and the red and black candle?
The colors are the same, but the Tiriri candle carries the label and the name of the guardian, and the prayer request goes directly to his falange. The red and black candle without a label is more general, serving for Exu and Pombagira and for the house guard as a whole.
Is Exu Tiriri of evil or good?
Tiriri works in favor of order, not of evil. Exu is a guardian, not a demon, and Tiriri works for order: he cleans, protects, and cuts what was commanded. The image of Exu as the devil comes from an old Christian reading. Whoever uses his name to do harm is outside of the foundation.
