The Exu Rei das Sete Encruzilhadas candle is not the same as the Exu Sete Encruzilhadas, and the difference matters. In the most widespread map of Quimbanda, the street people (povo de rua) are organized into seven kingdoms, each with a king. The kingdom of the crossroads, the gateway to all ritual work, has Exu Rei das Sete Encruzilhadas as its chief. Under him, various peoples work, and Sete Encruzilhadas is one of them, alongside Tranca-Ruas, Tiriri, Marabô, and Veludo.

Where he is most worshipped is in Rio Grande do Sul, in the Quimbanda that the people there call Linha Cruzada. In Porto Alegre, his festival in August fills the terreiro, and there was even a bill proposed to establish a date in the city. Those who receive him describe him as an elderly gentleman, refined, serious, and calm, who likes to teach and answers any question with patience. Few mediums incorporate him. There are houses that treat the Rei and the Sete Encruzilhadas as the same spirit; the text here follows those who make the distinction.

Because he is a king, he is sought for big matters: life changes, decisions that affect the family, business that needs direction. The candle is not for a small prayer request or a whim, and much less for harming someone. He gives a lot, but demands commitment, focus, and a kept word from whoever asks.

What is it for

What is the Exu Rei das Sete Encruzilhadas Candle for?

Red on top and black on the bottom, the candle of Exu Rei das Sete Encruzilhadas goes to the chief of the kingdom of the crossroads in Quimbanda. It is lit to request advice on a big decision, an order where everything went wrong, and a path that finally opens.

  • Advice for a big decision

Moving cities, closing a partnership, ending a marriage. When the choice weighs too much, the candle asks the king who sees the seven paths for clarity to see what you have not yet seen.

  • Path closed for a long time

It is not a one week delay, it is life stopped for years. The prayer request goes to the chief of the kingdom who opens all ritual works. He demands that you also move: an open opportunity requires feet on the ground.

  • Order where everything went wrong

Family at war, company without direction, house without command. The candle asks for the serene authority of the king to put each thing in its place. The part of the difficult conversation continues to be yours.

  • Grounding (firmeza) for those who lead

Whoever leads a team, runs a business, or holds the house alone asks him for posture and word. He is a king who teaches with calm, and the candle asks for that same calm in the hours of demand.

  • Guard on the passages of life

Every turn brings risk: a new job, a move, the start of a relationship. The candle asks for protection from the chief of the guardians of the paths to cross the transition phase without falling into a trap.

Prayer to light

Candle prayer to Exu King of the Seven Crossroads for direction

“Majesty, Exu King of the Seven Crossroads, I light this red and black candle and ask permission from your kingdom to reach you. You who govern the place where the paths cross, look at the crossroads where I am standing. Give me advice where I only see one way out, and calm where I only feel haste. Put order in what went wrong in my house and in my work, and command your guardians to watch over my passage. I do not ask you for a shortcut or for anyone's harm. I ask for direction, and I assume before you my part of the work. The word I give here, I fulfill. Laroyê, Exu King! Exu is Mojubá!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Candle of Exu King of the Seven Crossroads

  1. 1

    Ask permission from the kingdom

Greet Exu first and then the kingdom of the crossroads. The King is approached with the respect of someone arriving at the house of someone important: without haste, without shouting and without demands.

  2. 2

Stand firm outside, facing the street

In a corner of the backyard, near the gate or at a dirt crossroads near home, if it is safe. Inside the house, only if your house directs it, and always far from the altar of the orixás.

  3. 3

    Bring only one matter

Before lighting, decide which is the crossroads for this time. The King attends a clear request. State the problem, what you have already tried and what you are willing to do on your part.

  4. 4

    Light and serve with care

Light with a match, place the cup and the cigar next to the saucer, everything arranged. In the Quimbanda do Sul, fine drink and a well-set table are part of the respect to the king.

  5. 5

    Finish and fulfill the agreement

Let it burn until the end, without blowing. The drink goes to the earth and the wrapped wax to the trash. If you promised to give thanks, mark the day and fulfill it: the king does not forget.

Precautions before lighting

  • A 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: firm saucer, floor that does not burn and no fabric or dry grass nearby. Do not let children or animals reach it.
  • Exu Rei does not accept a prayer request to harm anyone. Whoever sells a ritual work of revenge in his name is far from the foundation of Quimbanda.
  • Assentamento, obrigação, and consultation with the King are matters of the terreiro and of a prepared medium. At home, light a simple candle; the rest is with the zelador of your house.
  • Anxiety and insomnia due to a big decision also require health care. The candle accompanies, but never replaces your doctor or psychologist.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Exu Rei das Sete Encruzilhadas candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    High, serene flame without trembling

Many houses read it as the king receiving the prayer request with calm: the answer comes, but in his own time and through the surest path.

  • Attention

Flame that dances in every direction

Some read it as a confused prayer request, with many matters at once. Choose only one crossroads and light another candle with a clean prayer request.

  • Observe

    Wick that grows and mushrooms

It could just be a thick wick or low quality wax. Do not touch the lit candle; observe the next one before drawing a conclusion.

  • Observe

Glass that darkens on one side

In popular reading, it shows which side the weight came from. Check before if the candle was not near wind or a wall.

  • Attention

Candle that goes out before the halfway point

It could be the wind, it could be a request at the wrong time. Greet Exu, relight calmly and, if it goes out again, take the matter to a Quimbanda terreiro.

He commands the peoples who work in the paths, such as Tranca-Ruas and Sete Encruzilhadas. Those who receive him describe him as an elderly, refined, calm, and very wise gentleman.

What is the difference between Exu Rei das Sete Encruzilhadas and Exu Sete Encruzilhadas?

In the organization of the kingdoms, the King leads the entire kingdom and Sete Encruzilhadas is one of the peoples who work under him. Therefore, the King's candle is for big matters and the Sete Encruzilhadas candle is for daily choices. Some houses treat both as the same spirit.

What is the day of Exu Rei das Sete Encruzilhadas?

Monday is the day to greet the povo de rua of Exu in most houses. In Rio Grande do Sul, his great festival happens in August, and in Porto Alegre there was a bill proposed for a commemorative date in the city. The exact calendar depends on the terreiro.

Can I light the candle of Exu Rei inside the house?

The custom is to set it outside, in the backyard or near the gate. If there is no way, use the area closest to the door and far from the altar of the orixás. Rei asks for a clean and tidy place, so take care with the saucer and the table.

Can I blow out the candle of Exu Rei das Sete Encruzilhadas?

It is better to let it burn until the end. If it is necessary to interrupt, smother it with a saucer, without blowing, and relight it as soon as you can, greeting again. Blowing is seen in many houses as undoing the prayer request.

What to do with the drink and the remains of the candle of Exu Rei?

The drink from the cup goes to the earth, at the foot of a tree or in a garden bed, and the cup is washed. The rest of the cigar and the leftover wax go wrapped for the trash, outside the house. None of this is kept or used in another ritual work.
