Cabocla Iara candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Those who look for the Cabocla Iara candle are usually with a chest full of stagnant things: a fight that was not resolved, a cry that did not come out, a nervousness that does not pass. It is a spirit candle, with the cabocla label on the glass and her two colors, light blue over green. In Umbanda it is settled on the congá, by the riverbank or at home, whenever the prayer request is for calm and cleansing of feelings.
Cabocla Iara belongs to the line of caboclos, spirits of indigenous people who work with the force of nature. The name comes from the water mother of Tupi stories, but in the terreiro she is a guide of light, not the mermaid who enchants fishermen. Many houses place Iara under Oxum, mistress of rivers and waterfalls, and the green reminds of Oxóssi, regent of the caboclos. Other houses receive her in the line of Iemanjá (Yemoja), in the water people. This variation exists and it is worth asking how it is in yours.
Lit at home, the Iara candle works slowly, like water that softens stone. It does not cut heavy demanda nor opens a path for money. What it does is cool a hot head, undo resentment and return to the home that gentle conversation that had been missing.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the Cabocla Iara candle to calm the heart
“Cabocla Iara, young woman of the fresh waters that run in the middle of the forest, I light this candle asking permission to come near your river. I bring with me a weight that I could not let go of alone. Wash with your fresh water the sorrow that remained in my chest and the anger that still boils in my head. Teach my mouth to speak more gently and my heart to wait without despair. Take into the current what no longer serves me and leave on the shore only what is peace. Mãe Oxum, who holds this water, and Pai Oxóssi, who guards this forest, bless this prayer request. May my house stay tranquil like a waterfall's eddy. Okê, Cabocla Iara!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to set the Cabocla Iara Candle
- 1
Wash your hands and face before
Iara is clean water, and the custom is to arrive clean as well. A ritual bath of lemon balm (erva-cidreira) or chamomile on the eve before helps to calm the body for the prayer.
- 2
Set up the small river on the saucer
Place the candle in the center of the saucer, the water cup next to it, and the petals floating in the cup. The green branch stays leaning against the saucer, reminding of the forest that surrounds the river.
- 3
Hold the candle and state your request
Before lighting, hold the candle between your hands and say which grievance or nervousness you want to surrender. Speak as you would speak to an older friend, without a memorized formula.
- 4
Light it and greet the cabocla
Light with a match, greet with Okê, Cabocla Iara and perform the prayer. Stay for a few minutes looking at the flame in silence, breathing slowly, before returning to your routine.
- 5
Return the water to nature
Do not blow out the flame: if needed, smother it with a lid. At the end, the petals and water go to the soil of a garden or a clean river, and the wrapped wax goes to the trash.
Precautions before lighting
- The 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: keep it away from curtains, dry plants, children, and animals, always on a dish and on a firm surface.
- Iara is a guide of light. Do not light her candle to separate a couple, force a return of love, or harm someone; this request is not from her line.
- To consecrate Iara as a guide of your crown, with a ponto (sacred song), assentamento (consecrated seat), or obligation (obrigação), the guidance comes from the zelador of your terreiro. The home candle does not replace this.
- When nervousness turns into anxiety that does not let you sleep or work, the candle accompanies the care and does not replace the doctor. Seek professional help as well.
- If you are returning water and petals to a river, do not leave glass, plastic, or a lit candle on the bank. Respecting nature is part of the fundamento of the caboclos.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Cabocla Iara Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
Soft, high flame without popping
Many houses read the serene flame as a sign that the cabocla received the request and the water is already flowing. It is the burning that matches a candle of calm.
- Good sign
Clean glass until the end of the burning
In the 7-day candle, the glass that ends clear is usually read as an open path for the peace that was requested, without anything heavy crossing.
- Attention
Flame that jumps and crackles
It may indicate that the nervousness is still very much alive in the person who lit it. Pray again with more calm and, if the crackling continues, change the candle on another day.
- Attention
Dark glass or with a lot of soot
Some readings point to old resentment being burned. If it happens in one candle after another, it is worth taking the matter to a gira and talking with a caboclo.
- Observe
Wax running like a tear
In a cabocla d'água candle, many people see here the crying that needed to come out. Before reading, check if the candle is not near heat or wind.

Questions about the Cabocla Iara Candle
Is Cabocla Iara Oxum or Iemanjá?
Neither: Iara is a cabocla, a spirit that works in Umbanda, and not an orixá (orisha). Many houses place her in the radiation of Oxum, because of the fresh water, but there are terreiros that receive her in the line of Iemanjá, along with the water people. What matters is your own house's tradition.
What is the best day to light the Cabocla Iara candle?
Thursday, which is the day of the caboclos and of Oxóssi. Many houses prefer Saturday, the day of Oxum, because of the fresh water. If the heart is heavy on a Tuesday, you can light it: the day helps, but it does not forbid the prayer.
Is Cabocla Iara the same Iara from folklore?
No, not in the way the legend tells it. The name comes from the Tupi mother of water, but the cabocla who descends in the terreiro is a spirit of light, who works for calm, cleansing, and harmony. She does not enchant or drown anyone, and treating the spirit as a haunting is disrespectful.
Can I blow out the Cabocla Iara candle and light it later?
You can, as long as you do not blow it out. Smother the flame with a lid or a saucer and light it again as soon as possible, repeating the greeting. Blowing is seen as undoing the prayer request with your own breath.
What to do with the water, the petals, and the leftover candle?
The water and the petals return to nature: the soil of a pot, a garden, or a clean river. The leftover wax and the empty glass go to the common trash, wrapped. Do not leave anything that dirties the shore, because that hurts the foundation of the cabocla herself.
What is the difference between the Iara candle and the Cabocla Jurema candle?
Jurema is the cabocla of the forest and the leaves, sought for emotional healing and to give steadiness to those who need to rise again. Iara is the cabocla of fresh water, sought when the prayer request is for calm, to cool the head, and for sweetness in coexistence. Both work in the line of the caboclos, and many people light one or the other depending on how they feel the prayer request: more of ground and strength, or more of river and serenity.
Can I light the Cabocla Iara candle at home without being from a terreiro?
You can. The prayer to the cabocla with respect, water, and a candle is within reach of anyone. What requires a terreiro is to set Iara as the guide of your crown or to perform ritual work with her, and that is with the zelador of a trusted house.
