White Candle
Peace of mind, steadiness of the Guardian Angel, and connection with the axé of Oxalá (Obatala)
White Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
The white candle is the first one we learn to light and the one that is never missing in a house of axé or a home of prayer. Used in Umbanda, Candomblé, Spiritism, and the popular devotion of those who pray without labels, it carries the complete light before unfolding into colors. Due to its clear and welcoming vibration, it serves to give thanks for blessings achieved, clear the mind, and ask for serenity in moments of distress, being the most direct point of contact with the higher spirituality.
In the tradition of the orixás (orishas), white is the primordial axé of Oxalá, the father of creation who modeled humanity. On Fridays, the terreiros wear white clothes, silence the atabaques, and avoid dendê oil as a sign of reverence. Iemanjá (Yemoja) also welcomes white in the calm waters, and spirit guides such as Pretos Velhos, Caboclos, and Spiritual Doctors accept the white candle to pour out blessings of health, comfort, and spiritual balance.
At home, the firmness of the white candle asks only for simplicity: a clean saucer, a glass of fresh water, and a serene thought. It does not carry the drastic cut of dark candles nor the abrasive heat of red fire for immediate clashes. Its sacred role is to settle afflictions, clear the mind, and return inner harmony with gentleness. Therefore, it is not used to force others' wills or demand results, but rather to purify the environment and renew hopes.
What is it for
What is the White Candle for
The white candle gathers all luminous vibrations. In the terreiro it belongs to Oxalá and welcomes Iemanjá, serving to ask for peace, clear thoughts, clean the house, firm the Guardian Angel, and replace any candle color that is missing at the moment of prayer.
-
Peace of mind and calm thoughts
For days of anxiety, poorly slept nights, or mental exhaustion. The white candle slows down afflictions and helps the mind find clarity, silence, and inner balance with serenity.
-
Firmeza and connection with the Guardian Angel
Recommended to strengthen the connection with your spiritual protector of birth. Lit in a high place with pure water, it wards off heavy energies and steadies intuition to make good decisions in daily life.
-
Purification and gentle cleaning of the home
Ideal after family arguments, heavy visits, or phases of tiredness in the house. It acts by clearing the astral field of the rooms, restoring the feeling of coziness, order, and lightness.
-
Gratitude to Oxalá and the guides
When a grace is granted or a difficult phase comes to an end, lighting the white candle is the most sincere gesture of gratitude to repay the support received from the orixás and spiritual mentors.
-
Universal color substitute in the candle ritual
If you need to make an urgent prayer or greeting and do not have the candle in the indicated color for that line, consecrate the white one with firm intention. It is accepted on any altar with great respect.

Prayer to light
White candle prayer to Oxalá and to the Guardian Angel
“Holy Angel of the Lord, my guardian and faithful guide, receive this white light that I light with a tranquil and sincere heart. Stay always in front of me illuminating my steps, guard my mind from heavy thoughts and wrap my spirit in serenity and support. Pai Oxalá, lord of creation and of the immaculate mantle, pour your blessing of peace over my house, my family, and my paths. Calm the storms of my heart, ward off any shadow of anguish, and make patience and concord flourish in my days. May your white light cover my head with wisdom, clearing the afflictions and returning tranquility to my life. May this flame burn in perfect harmony, carrying my gratitude and my prayer to your kingdom of light. Epa Babá!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the White Candle
- 1
Choose a high and clean location
Reserve a high piece of furniture or a shelf above your head line for the Guardian Angel, or a clean table for Oxalá. Avoid low places, bathrooms, or proximity to curtains and drafts.
- 2
Magnetize the candle between your hands
Hold the candle with respect and pass your hands gently from the base to the wick. Take a deep breath, close your eyes for a few moments, and visualize peace, consecrating the wax to the purpose you wish to anchor.
- 3
Position the glass of water to the side
Fix the candle firmly in the center of the saucer and place the glass of fresh water right next to it. The water works as a spiritual filter, absorbing miasmas and keeping the vibration of the space balanced.
- 4
Light with a match and say the prayer
Strike the match while visualizing white light. Sincerely state to whom the candle is offered and say your prayer, delivering your intentions without bargaining, anxieties, or material demands.
- 5
Let it burn and discard with respect
Do not blow out the flame. If you need to leave, smother it with a saucer or a snuffer. After finishing, pour the water into the drain or into the soil of a pot, and discard the wax remains in the common trash, wrapped in paper.
Precautions before lighting
- Never leave the candle burning without supervision near curtains, wood, or papers. Always use a firm ceramic support and keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Deep firmezas, head obligations, and bori rites require liturgical precept: this is with the zelador of your terreiro and cannot be replaced with candles at home.
- In prayer requests focused on physical or emotional health, the prayer and the candle work as spiritual support and strengthening of faith, never replacing medical treatment and care.
- The white candle operates on the frequency of peace and harmony. Do not use it for intentions of collection, imposition of others' will, or spiritual disputes.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the White Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High, firm, and bright flame
Indicates full tuning and acceptance of the prayer request. Shows that the environment is in harmony and that the spiritual forces received the prayer with great strength and serenity.
- Good sign
Flame with a bluish tip
Many houses read the blue tone as the presence of protectors and spiritual guides of great elevation nearby, signaling direct protection from the Guardian Angel.
- Attention
Flame that flickers without wind
May indicate mental agitation or anxiety of the person who lit it. It is worth breathing calmly, slowing down thoughts, and repeating the prayer seeking inner serenity.
- Attention
Dark smoke or soot on the saucer
Usually points to the burning of miasmas and dense charges of the location. If it persists, clean the house with a gentle rosemary smoke cleansing and take a herbal bath with fresh herbs.
- Observe
Candle that goes out by itself
Before spiritual readings, check for drafts and the wick. If everything is correct, relight it calmly, reaffirming your prayer request with faith.

Questions about the White Candle
Can I light the white candle for any orixá or spirit?
Yes, the white candle can replace any color in the absence of the specific candle. It contains all frequencies of light and is welcomed in any line of the terreiro, provided it is consecrated with respect and sincere faith. In more rigorous rituals and liturgical obligations, however, the zelador do terreiro may require the specific color of each orixá.
Why must the Guardian Angel firmeza stay high up?
Because the Guardian Angel is an elevated spiritual force that guides and protects our crown. Placing the candle above head height symbolizes reverence to the higher plane and reinforces the connection of the mind with the above. A shelf, high dresser, or secure niche are perfect places to set this point of light.
What is the best day to light the white candle?
Friday is the main day as it is dedicated to Oxalá, and Sunday is usually the most indicated for the Guardian Angel prayer. However, the white candle has no forbidden day or liturgical restriction: it can be lit at any time of the week when you feel the need for peace, protection, or serenity in the home.
Can I blow out the white candle and light it later?
The ideal is to let it burn until the end, but you can smother it if you need to leave the house. Never blow out the flame, as the breath disperses the energy and nullifies the intention placed in the candle. Use a snuffer or a saucer to extinguish it and, when you return, light it again while repeating the prayer.
What to do with the glass of water and the wax remains?
Pour the water down the drain or onto the ground and discard the wax in the common trash, wrapped in paper. Since the water acted as a filter collecting dense charges from the environment, it should never be ingested. Wash the glass and the saucer in running water so they can be used normally in other prayers.
What is the difference between the stick white candle and the 7-day candle?
The stick candle is intended for specific moments of prayer, while the 7-day candle sustains a continuous candle ritual. To light in daily life or when making a quick prayer to the Guardian Angel, the stick candle works with total efficacy. The 7-day candle is chosen for transition periods or phases that require uninterrupted radiation of peace in the environment.
Can I light a white candle inside the bedroom where you sleep?
Many traditions recommend avoiding lighting candles in the bedroom to keep rest protected from subtle energetic movements. The most recommended way is to consecrate the candle in the living room, on a reserved altar, or in a quiet room of the house. If the bedroom is the only location available, consecrate it high and in a safe spot away from the bed.
