Bordeaux / Wine Candle
Mature love, dignity and firmeza with discretion, in the strength of the Pombagiras
Bordeaux / Wine Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
The bordeaux candle, which many shops and terreiros call a wine candle, is usually chosen by those who have already passed the phase of urgent and impulsive passion. The prayer request here is different: a relationship that needs solid loyalty, a woman who wishes to be respected at work, or someone tired of being treated with little regard in daily life. It is a color of calm, firm, and deep presence, that does not shout nor needs to prove anything to anyone.
It is worth saying honestly: no orixá (orisha) has burgundy as a fixed color. The colors of the Pombagira are red and black, and wine is born right in the middle of the two. That is why so many Umbanda houses light burgundy for the Pombagiras, especially for Maria Padilha, on Friday night. Some terreiros also offer it to Iansã (Oya), reading wine as a deeper red. The custom changes from house to house.
At home, it asks for good posture and tranquility. It is not a candle to request in just any way or to try to force another person's will, as serious spirituality respects free will. The role of the burgundy flame is to give firmeza to the one who lights it: to protect one's own dignity, to hold onto what is yours with elegance and to let go, without scandal, that which has already ceased to deserve your time and your heart.
What is it for
Purpose of the Bordeaux / Wine Candle
Burgundy is the red that darkened and gained weight. In Umbanda it stays close to the Pombagira, between the red of life and the black of mystery, and is lit to consecrate the love that has already matured, to request respect and to care for one's own dignity.
-
To consecrate a love that has already matured
For couples who have already chosen each other and want loyalty and partnership in daily life. It requests care for what exists between the two, never the will of someone who does not want to stay.
-
Recovering self-esteem and dignity
After humiliation, betrayal, or a time of shrinking oneself to fit into someone's life. The wine flame reminds you who you are and helps you return to treating yourself with respect.
-
Being respected at work
When your word is not heard or your competence is questioned. Lit on the eve of a meeting, it steadies the posture of someone who knows their own value.
-
Ending a relationship that hurts
For those who decided to leave and need strength not to go back. The prayer request is for clarity and courage to close the door, without wishing ill to those who stayed on the other side.
-
To thank a Pombagira
When the lady of your house helped in a difficult phase, the burgundy candle with an open red rose is a beautiful way to return and say thank you, without asking for anything in return.
Who rules this candle
Orixás and spirits of the Burgundy / Wine Candle
-
Pombagira Maria Padilha
Queen of the crossroads and of elegance
Pombagira works in red and black, and burgundy sits between the two. Many houses reserve this tone for Maria Padilha and for the ladies of queenly stature, in requests for respect, self-love, and loyalty.
-
Iansã (Oyá)
Lady of the winds and of courage
The colors of Iansã (Oya) are coral red, brown, and pink, and burgundy is not hers by rule. Some houses accept wine as a dark red and light it for Oyá on Wednesday, when the request is courage to change one's life.

Prayer to light
Candle prayer for Pombagira Maria Padilha in burgundy
“Lady of the crossroads, who knows the night and is not afraid of it, receive this wine-colored candle that I light with respect. I do not come to ask that anyone change for my sake. I come to ask that I do not forget my own value. Guard my dignity when someone tries to diminish my name. Consecrate the love that is true on both sides and give me courage to let go of what only hurts me. Take from me the shame that is not mine and teach me to walk with my head held high. May I speak when it is necessary and remain silent when it is wisdom. May this flame burn deep and calm, like one who knows where they step. Laroyê, Pombagira! Laroyê!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Burgundy / Wine Candle
- 1
Wait for the night to arrive
Pombagira giras happen late, almost always on Fridays. Lighting it after sunset respects this custom and makes the house quieter for the prayer request.
- 2
Arrange a low and discreet corner
In Umbanda, the place on the left stays near the floor, away from the congá of the orixás. A clean corner of the room or the inside threshold of the door works well, always away from fabric.
- 3
Hold the candle before lighting
Hold it in your hands for a minute and say who it is for. Speak of the prayer request with frankness, like someone talking to an older friend who does not accept half-truths.
- 4
Offer the rose and the water
Place the open rose next to the saucer and the glass of water nearby. The rose is a gift; the water collects the weight that the flame takes away. The cinnamon, if used, stays on the edge of the plate.
- 5
Light it and let it burn completely
Light it with a match and do not blow. If you need to leave, smother it with a spoon. The next day, the rose and the water go to the soil of a garden and the leftover wax is wrapped for the trash.
Precautions before lighting
- The candle stays on the floor or near it, so double your attention: away from curtains, rugs, children, and animals, always on dishes or clay that can withstand the heat.
- The burgundy candle is not for binding anyone or taking away another person's choice. This type of request falls outside of what the house does and the respect that Pombagira deserves.
- Pombagira assentamento requires initiation and a house. Simple firmeza is done at home; foundation ritual work is with the zelador of your terreiro.
- If the relationship involves aggression or threats, the candle is not enough. Seek help: Ligue 180 serves women in situations of violence, for free and at any time.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Burgundy / Wine Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High, full, and serene flame
Many houses read this as a well-received request. The burgundy candle usually burns with a full and slow flame when the environment is calm and the intention is firm.
- Good sign
Flame that dances without crackling
For Pombagira, light movement in the flame is read by many houses as a joyful presence nearby. Just continue with the prayer in a low voice until the end.
- Attention
Crackling and small sparks
It may be moisture in the wick. If the candle is good, many read it as weight being burned. Pray again calmly and, if it repeats always, speak with a terreiro.
- Attention
A lot of wax running down the side
It is read as the candle's crying, a sign of hidden sadness in the one who lit it. It is worth taking care of the heart before insisting on the request and lighting another candle on a lighter day.
- Observe
Candle that goes out before the end
Check for wind, crooked wick, and wax quality. With everything in order, light it again, redo the request with more clarity, and let it finish in peace.

Questions about the Burgundy / Wine Candle
Which orixá or spirit is the bordeaux candle for?
In Umbanda, it is more commonly lit for the Pombagiras, especially Maria Padilha. No orixá has bordeaux as their own color, but there are houses that offer it to Iansã, who wears garnet. The classic color of Pombagira remains red and black; wine is a tone between the two.
What is the difference between the burgundy candle and the red candle?
The red one is open fire: courage, passion, immediate action. The bordeaux is the same fire but more closed and slow, used when the request is for maturity, respect, and loyalty. Many people use one instead of the other, but the tone of the request changes.
What is the best day and time to light the burgundy candle?
Friday night, which is when most houses hold a gira of Pombagira. Some prefer Monday, the day of the left, and those who light it for Iansã choose Wednesday. Ask at your terreiro what the custom is there.
Can I light a burgundy candle for Pombagira inside the house?
You can, as a simple firmeza and with respect. Choose a low, clean, and safe corner, separate from the altar of the orixás, and light it with an honest prayer request. Assentamento and ritual work of fundamento stay with the terreiro, not in the living room.
Can I blow out the burgundy candle before it finishes?
The correct way is to let it burn until the end. If you need to leave, smother the flame with a spoon or a saucer, without blowing, and light it again when you return. Blowing is seen as undoing the prayer request with your own breath.
What to do with the rose, the water, and the leftover wax?
On the day after the burning ends, the rose and the water go to the earth of a garden or a pot. The leftover wax goes to the common trash, wrapped in paper. The saucer is washed and stored for the next candle.
Is the burgundy candle used to force someone's return?
No. It firms the love that exists from both sides and takes care of your dignity, but it does not change anyone's will. If the person moved away, the most beautiful prayer request is for clarity and peace to move on with your own life.
