Those who seek the dark blue candle, also called the anil candle, almost always face a demanding phase. It is the candle of closed blue, the color of iron and the deep waters of the sea. It is present in the Umbanda congá, in the sacred rooms (quartos de santo) of Candomblé, and on the altar of those seeking moral strength not to falter in the work routine, mental clarity for studies, or courage to make a difficult decision.

The foundation of this color dates back to Ketu nation Candomblé, where dark blue and indigo compose the bead necklaces of Ogum, lord of iron and paths. In Umbanda, although Ogum usually receives red due to the heritage of Saint George, many houses reserve closed blue for beach falanges, such as Ogum Beira-Mar and Ogum Sete Ondas. Tuesday is the consecrated day in both traditions to set the ponto and ask for protection.

Lit at home, it works slowly and with discipline, settling the thought and sustaining the spirit of those who need to continue. It does not solve problems without your dedication nor does it act as lawyers or doctors, and it should never be used for revenge or unfair disputes. Think of it as a companion for a long journey, bringing inner silence so you can see the next step and act with integrity.

What is it for

What is the Dark Blue Candle (Anil) for

Dark blue, which many people call indigo, is the ancient color of Ogum in the nation houses. The candle of this color is lit to ask for steadiness at work, focus on studies, courage for a decision, and protection for those who need to go out to the fight every day.

  • Strength for the work of each day

For those who live by effort and feel that the service is heavy, stuck, or unfair. Light it on Tuesday before leaving and ask for disposition, not a miracle.

  • Focus on studies and on exams

Dark blue helps to sit down and study. Many people light the 7 day candle during the week of the competition or the entrance exam, next to the table where they study.

  • Courage to make a decision

When you know what you need to do and lack the heart to do it: resign, end a partnership, collect what is yours. Ogum does not decide for you, but he firms the step.

  • Protection for those who walk on the street

Drivers, delivery people, security guards, and those who work at night usually consecrate Ogum to stay protected on the way out and back.

  • Firm head against distraction

In periods of accelerated thought, doubt, or mental fatigue, the indigo flame helps to organize ideas and to finish one thing at a time.

    Ogum

Lord of iron and open paths

Dark blue is the color of Ogum's beads in Ketu, and Tuesday is his day. It was Ogum who opened the forest with the machete for others to pass, that is why the indigo candle serves those who need to open space with their own arm.

    The warrior quality of Iemanjá

Ogunté is the young Iemanjá of the breaking waves, who carries a sword and is counted as the wife of Ogum. Because of this bond, some houses give her the darkest blue instead of the light one. It is a house custom, not a general rule: confirm with your zelador.

Prayer to light

Dark blue candle prayer to Ogum

“Pai Ogum, lord of iron, I light this blue candle to ask for permission on my path. I do not ask for the fight to end, I ask for strength to cross it. Give firmeza to my hands at work and silence to my head when I need to study and decide. Cut with your sword the discouragement, the laziness, and the fear that make me give up before the time. Guard my going and my return, on the street and on the road. May I win without stepping over anyone, and may every door that opens be opened with honesty. Ogum, my father, walk before me. Ogunhê!”

Step by step

How to set the Dark Blue Candle (Indigo)

  1. 1

Write the prayer request in one sentence

Ogum is direct and likes a clear prayer request. On a piece of paper, write what you want to achieve and with what effort. Fold the paper and leave it under the saucer.

  2. 2

Set up the ponto near the door

Ogum guards the entrance of the house. A small table near the door or the congá itself works, as long as it is away from curtains. Place the snake plant (espada de São Jorge) next to it, if you have one.

  3. 3

Firm the candle with both hands

Hold the candle by the base, upright, and think about the battle you are facing. Say in a low voice that it is for Ogum and what your purpose is.

  4. 4

    Light on Tuesday and pray

Light with a match, greet with an Ogunhê and say the prayer. The glass with water and salt stays to the side, receiving what the flame cuts during the burning.

  5. 5

    Finish without blowing

Let the candle burn until the end. If you need to leave, smother it with a spoon. The paper with the prayer request can be kept until the grace arrives; the water goes to the earth and the wax, wrapped, goes to the trash.

Precautions before lighting

  • The 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: leave it on tableware, away from curtains, loose paper, and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Ogum is the orixá (orisha) of justice. Do not light the dark blue candle to hinder a colleague's life or to defeat someone dishonestly.
  • The assentamento, tools, and obrigação of Ogum are done with the zelador of your terreiro. The house candle is devotion, it does not replace the foundational rites.
  • If the candle is for a lawsuit or a legal fight, it accompanies the lawyer and the documents in order, and does not do their work.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Dark Blue (Indigo) Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    Straight, high, and constant flame

Many houses read this as an accepted request and a clear path. It is the way Ogum responds: firm, without noise and without deviation.

  • Good sign

Flame that crackles or releases sparks

It is usually read as a sign of a cut, of something being broken in the path. If the crackle passes and the flame settles, the reading is good.

  • Attention

Low flame that struggles to rise

It may indicate discouragement from the one who lit it or a path that is still closed. Pray again calmly and repeat the candle the following Tuesday.

  • Attention

    Wax running to one side

Some read this as a part of the request that still requires effort. Check first if the candle is straight and away from the wind; if it repeats, speak with your terreiro.

  • Observe

Darkened glass of the 7-day candle

Soot in the cup is common with a thick wick. If it comes along with malaise in the house, it is worth seeking a trusted zelador for guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Dark Blue Candle (Indigo)

Which orixá is the dark blue candle for?

It is for Ogum. In Ketu Candomblé his beads are dark blue, and that is where the indigo candle comes from. In Umbanda, Ogum usually receives red, but dark blue remains linked to him, especially to Ogum Beira-Mar. Some houses also give the deep blue to Iemanjá Ogunté.

What is the difference between the light blue and dark blue candle?

The light blue is for Iemanjá and asks for calm, peace at home, and emotional balance. The dark blue is for Ogum and asks for firmeza, focus, and courage. One calms, the other puts you on your feet. If the problem is a family fight, go with light blue; if it is a struggle at work, go with dark blue.

What is the best day to light the dark blue candle?

Tuesday, which is Ogum's day. In the morning, before leaving, is the most used time. If the request is urgent, the candle can be lit on another day, but the 7-day candle ritual usually starts on a Tuesday.

Can I blow out the Ogum candle and light it again later?

You can, as long as you do not blow it out. Smother the flame with a spoon or with the lid of the cup and relight it when you return, repeating the prayer request. The ideal, always, is to let the candle finish on its own.

Are dark blue and navy blue candles the same thing?

In the shop, they are commonly treated almost as the same color, but there is a difference. Anil is a vivid and dark blue, linked to Ogum. Navy is more closed, close to black, and many houses use it for Marinheiros and for the spiritual legions (falanges) of the sea. If in doubt, use the one your house indicates.

Can I light a dark blue candle at home without belonging to a terreiro?

You can. The Ogum candle to ask for strength at work or in studies is devotion, and anyone can light it with respect. What stays inside the terreiro is the consecrated foundation (assentamento) of the orixá and the obligations, which require the hand of a zelador.

What to do with the leftover wax and with the water in the cup?

The salt water goes to the ground or to the drain, and the cup is washed. The leftover wax can be wrapped in paper and go to the common trash. The glass from the 7-day candle can be washed and reused at home.
