Ogum (Ogun) Beira-Mar and Oxalá (Obatala) together, to travel, change your life, and decide with a peaceful mind
Dark Blue and White Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
There are candles to light when life is at a standstill, and there is the dark blue and white candle, which is usually sought when life is about to move. A long road, a new house, an unknown city, a contract that changes everything. It is a bicolor from Umbanda, with a band of dark blue and another of white, and it appears on the congá of those who need to leave without leaving courage and judgment behind.
The dark blue comes from Ogum Beira-Mar, the line of the warrior orixá (orisha) who works on the beach, on the border between the land and the waters of Iemanjá (Yemoja). The white is from Oxalá, father of creation, who asks for patience before any step. Therefore, houses diverge on the day: some set it on Tuesday, which is Ogum's, others on Friday, which is Oxalá's. The line of the Sailors, who live in the same sea territory, also accepts this candle.
At home, it does not replace planning or care on the road. What it does is provide firmeza to those who have already decided and peace to those who are still weighing the pros and cons. Ogum enters with strength, Oxalá with a cool head, and the person follows with both things at the same time.
What is it for
What is the Dark Blue and White Candle for
Half dark blue, half white, this candle joins the iron of Ogum Beira-Mar and the calm of Oxalá. It is lit to protect travels and changes, to set a big decision and request courage without losing serenity.
-
Protection for a long trip
Light it on the eve of departure, with someone from the house nearby to watch the flame. The prayer request is a quiet departure, a peaceful return, and an open eye on every stretch of the path.
-
Moving house or city
Whoever changes addresses takes fear and exhaustion along with them. Set in the new house, the candle asks that Ogum guard the door and that Oxalá settle the environment for the family.
-
Decide something big without panic
Accepting a job in another state, ending a phase, signing an important paper. The flame helps to weigh with calm and, later, to sustain the choice made.
-
Firm head in the moment of doubt
For the days when a person changes their mind every moment and does not move forward. The blue asks for firmeza, the white asks for clarity, and together they help to finish the reasoning.
-
Greet Ogum Beira-Mar and the marujada
In the gira of Marinheiros or during a visit to the beach, the candle is offered in gratitude to the line of salt waters. Light it on the dry sand and collect what it took.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the dark blue and white candle to Ogum Beira-Mar and Oxalá
“Ogum Beira-Mar, guardian of the sand and the waves, I light this candle because I am going to cross a new stretch of my life. Stay on watch on my path, on the road, in the water and in the air, and cut with your sword the danger that I cannot see. Pai Oxalá, cover my head with your white cloth, so that I do not decide out of anger or out of fear. Teach me to wait when it is time to wait and to go when it is time to go. May the house that stays and the house that receives me be in peace. May I arrive whole and return whole, with gratitude in my chest. Ogunhê! Epa Babá!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Dark Blue and White Candle
- 1
Note where you are going
Write on the paper the destination of the trip, the new address or the decision at stake, and your full name. Fold it into four and leave it under the plate during the entire burning.
- 2
Choose a corner near the exit
Ogum Beira-Mar guards passages. A table near the entrance door works well, away from curtains and drafts. In the new house, set the firmeza in the first room arranged.
- 3
Arrange the leaf and the water
The Saint George's sword (snake plant) is laid down next to the plate, with the tip pointing out of the house. The glass with salt stays on the other side, to receive the weight that the flame takes away.
- 4
Light them while greeting the two
Strike the match, light it and say Ogunhê for the blue and Epa Babá for the white. Pray the prayer and state your prayer request with frankness, like someone asking for an escort for the road.
- 5
Close the firmeza with respect
Do not blow out the flame. Upon returning from the trip or when settling into the new house, give thanks. The water goes to the earth, the paper can be burned carefully and the wax, wrapped, goes to the trash.
Precautions before lighting
- A 7-day candle is a fire lit day and night. Leave it inside a ceramic basin, away from curtains, children, and animals, and never leave it lit in an empty house.
- This candle protects the path, but it does not replace car maintenance, up to date documents, and prudence at the wheel. Faith goes hand in hand with care.
- Do not use the force of Ogum to impose your decision on another person. The candle firms your choice, not the will of those around you.
- The assentamento of Ogum, the obrigação to Oxalá, and the ritual work on the beach with the marujada (sailors) are guided by the zelador of your terreiro, not by the candle at home.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Dark Blue and White Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
Firm, long flame without smoke
It is read as an open path and a well placed guard. Many houses understand that Ogum accepted the escort and that the journey continues under surveillance.
- Observe
Low flame in the first hours
It is almost always the wick adjusting to the wax. If it remains low after the first day, some read it as the exhaustion of the one who asked: rest before departing.
- Attention
Flame that oscillates and curves
Suggests indecision or anxiety in the one who lit it. Breathe, redo the prayer more slowly, and review the decision calmly before taking the next step.
- Good sign
Small pops in the wick
They are usually read as Ogum cutting obstacles in the path. If the flame calms down after the crack, the traditional reading is good.
- Attention
Glass cup completely blackened
It may indicate heavy energy in the path or in the house. Repeat the firmeza with a new candle and, if the sign persists, ask for guidance from a trusted terreiro.

Seaweed
Fucus vesiculosus and related species
Algae is from Iemanjá's sea, where Ogum Beira-Mar works. A little dried algae on a saucer nearby reminds one of the beach; the custom varies from house to house.

Questions about the Dark Blue and White Candle
Which orixá is the dark blue and white candle for?
It is for Ogum Beira-Mar and Oxalá. The dark blue belongs to Ogum in the line that works on the beach, and the white is for Oxalá. In Umbanda, the candle is also offered to the Marinheiros, who live in the same sea territory. Each house may give more weight to one or the other.
What is the difference between the blue and white candle and the dark blue and white candle?
The color of the blue changes the request. The blue and white uses the light blue of Iemanjá and is a candle for peace in the family. The dark blue and white uses the indigo of Ogum Beira-Mar and serves for protection in travel, moving, and decision. One welcomes, the other escorts.
What is the best day to light the dark blue and white candle?
Tuesday is the most common day, as it belongs to Ogum. Houses that give more weight to white prefer Friday, the day of Oxalá. For travel, it is better to light it on the eve of departure than to wait for the day of the week: the timing of the request rules.
Can I leave the candle lit while I travel?
Only if someone stays at home to look after it. A lit candle in an empty house is a fire risk, and Ogum does not ask for that. If no one will stay, light it a few days before, let it finish with you present and, upon your return, light another to give thanks.
If the candle goes out in the middle of the firmeza, what do I do?
Light it again with a match and repeat the request. Beforehand, see if it was wind, a wick drowned in wax, or a low quality candle, which are the most common causes. Only if it goes out several times in a row is it worth talking to a terreiro.
Can I light this candle at home without it being from a terreiro?
You can. Asking for protection from Ogum and calm from Oxalá is a devotion open to anyone who lights it with respect. What asks for initiation and zelador is the assentamento of the orixá, the obrigação, and the ritual work of gira with the line of the Sailors.
What to do with the leftover wax and with the paper of the request?
The water with salt goes to the ground or to the drain. The paper can be burned carefully in the plate itself or kept until the trip is over. The leftover wax goes wrapped in paper for the common trash, and the glass can be washed.
