Think of the point where a river reaches the sea. The fresh water does not disappear: it mixes with the salt water and the two follow together. The blue and yellow candle is born from this image. Half of the wax has the light blue of the waves, half has the yellow of the gold that runs in the riverbed, and whoever lights it is asking for two things to walk side by side: care for the family and the prosperity of the home.

In the terreiro, the light blue belongs to Iemanjá, mother of heads, and the yellow belongs to Oxum, lady of the waterfalls and of fertile love. Both are iabás and many Umbanda houses reserve Saturday for them. There are Candomblé houses that read blue with yellow as the color of Logunedé (Logun Ede), son of Oxum, but there the blue is turquoise and his candle is another. If you have doubts, ask in your terreiro.

Inside the home, this bicolor is usually chosen for the couple that is growing apart, for those who desire a child, or for the family that needs peace to prosper. It does not force anyone to stay, it does not undo heavy demanda, and it does not bring back those who left. It welcomes, sweetens coexistence, and asks that the home be a good place to return to.

What is it for

What is the purpose of the Blue and Yellow Candle

The blue and yellow candle joins two mothers of the waters. The light blue is from Iemanjá, the yellow is from Oxum, and the candle serves to request harmony in the couple, blessing for the family, fertility and an abundance that arrives with sweetness, without fighting at home.

  • Peace and affection between the couple

When conversation turned into demands and silence weighs on the dinner table. The candle requests that Oxum returns the sweetness and that Iemanjá calms the spirits. The dialogue continues to be between the two of you.

  • Blessing for the family and the home

For a new house, recent marriage or a relative who moved back in. The blue and yellow candle firms the request for good coexistence and protection for those who share the same roof.

  • I want to be a mother, I want to be a father

Iemanjá and Oxum are the mothers of pregnancy in the terreiro. Many people light this candle when starting to try for a child, as a prayer of welcoming, along with medical follow-up.

  • Prosperity that stays at home

The gold of Oxum with the abundance of the sea. The candle is used to request that the family money lasts and does not drain in misplaced spending, with your work and planning.

  • Emotional balance in difficult phases

For those who are crying for no reason, irritated or too sensitive. The waters of the two iabás help to calm the chest and see more clearly what to do next.

Prayer to light

Prayer of the blue and yellow candle to Iemanjá and Oxum

“Mother Iemanjá, who guards my head, and Mother Oxum, who sweetens my heart, I light this candle where your waters meet. Look over my house and over those who sleep under this roof. Where there is a harsh word, put gentleness. Where there is a lack, put abundance that comes with honesty. If it is in my path to generate or raise a child, prepare me for it with health and wisdom. Teach us to take care of each other without being bound, to be together by choice and not by fear. May this flame run as the river runs to the sea, without haste and without stopping, and carry to you my gratitude. Odoyá, my mother! Ora Yeyê Ô!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Blue and Yellow Candle

  1. 1

    Set the table for two

Cover a table or dresser with a light cloth, preferably in a room the family uses together, such as the living room. The candle is for the entire house, not for a hidden corner.

  2. 2

    Separate the two waters

The cup of fresh water stays next to the yellow, for Oxum. The cup of salt water stays next to the blue, for Iemanjá. Between them, the saucer with the candle in the middle, uniting the two.

  3. 3

Hold the candle thinking of those you love

Before lighting, pass the candle through your hands from the base to the wick and say the names of the people in the house in a low voice. If it is a request for a couple, it is good for both to do it together.

  4. 4

Light it and offer the flowers

Light it with a match, greet the two mothers, and place the yellow rose near Oxum and the white one near Iemanjá. Then say the prayer and the request in your own words.

  5. 5

    Follow the week without blowing

Change the water in the cups when it lowers. If you need to smother it, use a saucer. At the end, the waters go to the soil of a pot, the withered roses to the garden, and the wax to the trash wrapped in paper.

Precautions before lighting

  • The 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: keep it away from curtains, long tablecloths, and out of reach of children and pets, always on a dish.
  • This candle asks for harmony, not dominance. Do not use it to bind someone, separate a couple, or force feelings; neither of the two mothers accepts this type of request.
  • An offering of iabá with food, sea, or waterfall, and any head obrigação, must be done with the guidance of your terreiro's zelador, not alone at home.
  • Those trying to conceive or undergoing health treatment use the candle as a prayer. It accompanies and never replaces medical supervision.

Ceromancy

What the Blue and Yellow Candle flame shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    High, quiet, and golden flame

Many houses read this as the request being welcomed by the two mothers. The house is peaceful enough for the candle to burn without haste, which is what is expected here.

  • Good sign

    The two colors melt equally

When the blue and yellow descend together, without one side running more than the other, it is usually read as a balance between family care and prosperity.

  • Attention

Wax dripping from only one side

Before reading, check if the candle is straight and away from the wind. If it is, many houses understand that one of the requests needs more of your attention. Observe and talk at home.

  • Attention

Flame that crackles and releases sparks

There may be hidden tension among the people in the house. It is not a reason for alarm: pray again, open the windows and, if it repeats always, seek a trusted terreiro.

  • Observe

Low flame that does not grow

A short wick or one drowned in wax explains most cases. Carefully remove the excess after extinguishing and light it again, repeating the request calmly.

What is the best day to light the blue and yellow candle?

Saturday, the day of the iabás in most Umbanda terreiros, which belongs to Iemanjá and Oxum. Some houses prefer late afternoon, when the family is gathered. Other than that, an urgent prayer request for peace at home can be made on any day of the week.

Can I blow out the 7-day candle and light it again?

You can, as long as you do not blow it out. Cover it with a saucer or a spoon when you need to leave the house and relight it when you return, repeating the request. The ideal is for it to burn until the end, but safety comes before tradition.
