Green and Yellow Candle
The forest of Oxóssi (Oshosi) and the gold of Oxum (Oshun) asking for work, sustenance, and abundance at home
Green and Yellow Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Those who type green and yellow candle in Google are usually tight on money, have a weak business, or are looking for a job. The combination makes sense for this: green reminds one of the growing crop and yellow reminds one of the ripe ear of corn, the grain that becomes bread. It is a very common 7-day bicolor in religious items shops, lit on the congá, on the shop counter, or in the kitchen at home.
The foundation varies from house to house, and it is worth knowing this before lighting. In Umbanda, the most common reading gives green to Oxóssi, king of the forests, on Thursday, and yellow to Oxum, lady of gold, on Saturday. There are houses that see both colors as belonging to Oxóssi alone, because his bead necklace is green and yellow. In Candomblé, this pair is the main color of Oxumaré (Oshumare), and in Batuque Ijexá, of Ossanha. Ask the leader of your terreiro which reading applies in your house.
What this candle does not do also needs to be said. It does not draw numbers, it does not make money appear out of nowhere, and it does not take from anyone what belongs to them. It accompanies those who are working: the resume sent, the storefront arranged, the garden watered. It is a candle for those who plant and want to harvest.
What is it for
What is the purpose of the Green and Yellow Candle
Forest green and gold yellow in a single candle. In Umbanda, it unites Oxóssi, the hunter who brings food, and Oxum, mistress of wealth. It is lit to ask for work, sustenance, clients for the business, and a table that does not stay empty.
-
Arranging a job or a new work
For those who are distributing resumes or waiting for an interview response. Oxóssi is the hunter who aims at the target, and the candle asks for focus and good luck in the search, which continues to be yours.
-
Clients and movement in the business
Lit in a safe corner of the store, the hall, or the market stall, in a month of stagnant cash. It asks for the clientele to return and for the daily effort to yield the fair share.
-
So that the house pantry does not empty
In the kitchen, next to a saucer with corn or bean grains, when the month's money is not covering the groceries. It is the oldest prayer request made to Oxóssi.
-
Unlocking a project that does not leave the paper
The renovation that does not start, the order that is delayed, the idea kept for years. The green and yellow candle asks for movement, and Oxumaré, in Candomblé, is precisely the orixá (orisha) of what turns.
-
Thanking for the harvest that arrived
The signed contract, the signed employment card, the first good month of the store. Returning with the same candle to give thanks is a terreiro custom and firms the path for the next time.

Oxóssi
Hunter who provides for the village

Know Oxóssi -
Oxum
Lady of gold and sweet waters
The yellow of the candle is the gold of Oxum, the iabá of wealth, who has Saturday as her day. She enters so that the fruit of the work turns into well-cared-for money, with sweetness and without waste.
Know Oxum -

Prayer to light
Prayer of the green and yellow candle to Oxóssi and Oxum
“Pai Oxóssi, hunter of a single arrow, I light this candle because I do not want to stop walking. Teach my eyes to see the passing opportunity and give firmeza to my hands to reach it. May my work be honest and may it not be lacking. Mãe Oxum, owner of the gold and the river, receive this yellow as a prayer request from one who plants and waits to harvest. Make the little I have go further and teach me to care for the much, if it arrives. May the table in this house be abundant, the bread be shared, and no one leave hungry. I thank you in advance for what has come and for what is still to come. Okê Arô, Oxóssi! Ora Yeyê Ô, Oxum!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to set the Green and Yellow Candle
- 1
Choose where the money circulates
For work and business, the place is the counter, the workbench, or a store shelf. For abundance at home, the kitchen. Always far from fabric, paper, and flammable merchandise.
- 2
Make the bed of grains
Scatter the corn or bean grains on the plate, forming a bed, and place the bay leaves around. The grain is the seed of what you request, and the bay leaf calls for victory.
- 3
Hold the candle and state your request
With the candle between your hands, state clearly what you need: the job, the clientele, the paid bill. A vague request gives aimless flame; a concrete request gives direction.
- 4
Light and call the two orixás
Light with a match, call Oxóssi and Oxum by name and say the prayer. If your house is of Candomblé and the candle is for Oxumaré, greet with Arroboboi.
- 5
Close the firmeza with respect
Do not blow out the flame. When the candle finishes, the grains go to the soil of a pot or a garden, the bay leaf can go along, and the water from the cup is poured on the dirt floor.
Precautions before lighting
- 7-day candle stays lit day and night. Place inside a deep plate, away from curtains, cardboard boxes, and stock, and out of reach of children and animals.
- Ask for what is yours for work. Do not light it to take a neighbor's client, win a dishonest dispute, or harm a competitor.
- If your house of axé works with another foundation for these colors, the guidance of the head of your house comes first. The candle at home does not replace the ritual obligation (obrigação).
- The candle does not solve debt alone. Along with it, organize your accounts and seek financial guidance when the situation is difficult.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Green and Yellow Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High and constant flame
Many houses read it as an accepted request and an open path. It is a sign to continue doing your part with the same disposition.
- Good sign
Wax that melts equally in both colors
The green and yellow descending together are usually read as a balance between effort and reward, without one side pulling the other.
- Attention
Low flame that is hard to catch
It may indicate discouragement from the person who lit it or a request that is still confused. Pray again calmly and, if it continues, redo the firmeza next Thursday.
- Attention
A lot of soot on the glass
Some houses read it as envy or weight around your work. Before concluding, trim the wick. If it repeats every time, speak with a trusted terreiro.
- Observe
Candle that cracks or burns crookedly
Most of the time it is heat, wind, or low quality wax. Change the location, set the candle on the plate, and monitor the burning until the end.

Questions about the Green and Yellow Candle
Which orixá is the green and yellow candle for?
In Umbanda, the most common reading is Oxóssi in green and Oxum in yellow. In Candomblé, the two colors together are for Oxumaré, and in Batuque Ijexá they appear for Ossanha. There is no single answer: it depends on the tradition of the house where you pray.
What is the best day to light the green and yellow candle?
Thursday, the day of Oxóssi, is the most used. If the prayer request is more linked to money and gold, Oxum's Saturday also works. For Oxumaré, many houses choose Tuesday. Since it is a 7-day candle, it ends up passing through all three.
Can I light the green and yellow candle in my shop?
You can, and it is one of its most common uses. Choose a place visible to you and safe from fire, away from merchandise and paper. If the location does not allow a flame, light it at home with the prayer request directed toward the business.
What is the difference between the green candle and the green and yellow one?
The all-green one is for Oxóssi and the Caboclos and is usually lit for hope and renewal. By gaining the yellow of Oxum, the prayer request becomes more about prosperity: work that gives a return, money that comes in and stays.
Can I blow out the 7-day candle and light it later?
The custom is to let it burn without interrupting. If it is truly necessary, smother it with a lid or saucer, without blowing, and relight it as soon as you can, repeating the greeting. Interrupting many times weakens the ritual.
What to do with the grains and the rest of the candle at the end?
The grains go to the earth, in a pot, garden, or flowerbed, as returned seeds. The leftover wax and glass go into the common trash, wrapped. Do not cook or eat the grains that remained in the setup.
Does the green and yellow candle have to do with the flag of Brazil?
Not in the tradition. The coincidence of colors exists, but in the terreiro, green and yellow speak of the forest, gold, and the rainbow, that is, of Oxóssi, Oxum, and Oxumaré. Whoever lights it out of devotion asks for prosperity, not for a cheering squad.
