Black and Yellow Candle
The Exu (Eshu) do Ouro candle: protection over incoming money and an open path at work
Black and Yellow Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Those who look for the black and yellow candle are almost always thinking about money. It is the bicolor candle that the religious community associates with livelihood: the sale that does not happen, the client who disappeared, the payment that got stuck halfway. It appears in Umbanda and in houses of Quimbanda, especially where work is done with Exu do Ouro, and is highly requested by merchants, self-employed individuals, and those who live on commission.
The reading of the colors is direct. Black is for Exu, the guardian who stays at the door and decides what passes, and Monday is his day. Yellow recalls gold, and some houses link this vibration to Oxum (Oshun), lady of wealth who flows like water. It is worth knowing that the combination is not unanimous: the most registered record for Exu do Ouro asks for a black and red candle, and the black and yellow entered through the custom of highlighting the side of prosperity.
At home or in the shop, its foundation is merit. The candle does not put money in the account and does not take clients from anyone. What is requested is that the path of gain remains open, that what comes in does not drain away for no reason, and that envy does not touch your work. The rest continues to be effort, fair price, and a kept word.
What is it for
What is the purpose of the Black and Yellow Candle
Half black, half yellow: below the guard of Exu, above the color of gold and abundance. The black and yellow candle is lit for Exu do Ouro and the povo de rua, asking for an open path in work, protection of the cash register, and circulation of what is earned with effort.
-
Make money start circulating again
The month where the accounts do not balance, the collection that does not arrive, the receivable that is stuck. The candle asks that the flow starts moving again, and you do your part by collecting and organizing the accounts.
-
Movement in commerce and sales
Lit in a discreet corner of the store or the stall, it accompanies the week asking for customers and good negotiation. It works together with a tidy display and well-done service.
-
Guard the cash register from envy and loss
For those who feel that the profit leaves as quickly as it arrives, or that there is a jealous eye on the business. The black asks for the guard of Exu over what is already yours.
-
Open a path for a new job
Interview, proposal, first client of a service that is starting. The candle asks that the opportunity appears and that you are ready for it when it knocks on the door.
-
Judgment to deal with what comes in
There are people who earn and do not hold on to it. The tradition of Exu do Ouro speaks of balance: the candle is also lit to ask for a cool head at the time of spending, investing, and sharing.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the black and yellow candle to Exu do Ouro
“Exu do Ouro, guardian of the door of my livelihood, I light this two-colored candle and ask permission to speak of my work. I do not ask for wealth that I do not deserve, nor for anyone else's customers. I ask that the path of my gain remains open, that opportunity finds me awake, and that I know how to recognize it. Guard what enters through my door, ward off the evil eye and waste, and give me judgment to use well what comes. Mother Oxum, let my money flow like your water, clean and without stopping. May each coin on this plate remind me that money needs to move, and that my gain comes from honest work. Laroyê, Exu do Ouro! Exu is Mojubá!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Black and Yellow Candle
- 1
Choose a discreet corner near the entrance
In a shop, near the door or behind the counter, out of the customer's sight. At home, in a place near the entrance. Exu firmeza does not go in the bedroom or on the altar of the orixás (orishas).
- 2
Arrange the coins around
Place the candle on a saucer and arrange the seven coins in a circle, with the cinnamon nearby. The coins speak of circulation, not of payment: stagnant money serves no one.
- 3
Ask for permission before lighting
Hold the candle by the black part and say in a low voice your name and the name of your work. It is time to make the prayer request clear, without wanting what belongs to another person.
- 4
Light and hail Exu do Ouro
Light with a match, leave the glass of water nearby and say the prayer. Finish with the greeting and fulfill what you promised. Exu collects on the given word, and that is respect.
- 5
Extinguish without blowing out the flame
Let it burn for seven days. If you need to put it out, smother it with a saucer. At the end, the water goes to the earth, the wax goes wrapped for the trash, and the coins can go to the register or to the street.
Precautions before lighting
- A 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: use a firm saucer, away from curtains, paper, stock, and merchandise, and out of reach of children and animals.
- Do not light it to take a client from a competitor or to harm someone who owes you. Exu do Ouro works with merit, and a crooked prayer request returns crooked.
- Exu's assentamento (consecrated altar), tronqueira, or offering at the crossroads is for the leader of your terreiro. The candle at home does not replace this foundation.
- No candle guarantees turnover. It accompanies the work, the organization of accounts, and the service, and it does not do any of that in your place.
Ceromancy
What the Black and Yellow Candle flame shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High and stable flame during the week
Many houses read this as an accepted prayer request and a firm path. The candle crosses the days without incident, as expected from a well-made consecration.
- Good sign
Small sparks coming from the wick
It is read as movement: something starting to move, a contact, a proposal. It can also just be moisture in the wick, so observe without anxiety.
- Attention
Wax dripping from the yellow side
Some houses read this as money draining due to carelessness. It is worth looking at your own accounts and the expenses of the week before repeating the prayer request.
- Attention
Thick black smoke at the beginning
Some houses read this as envy or a stagnant load in the candle's place. Before, check for a long wick and air currents. If it repeats in other candles, speak with a trusted terreiro.
- Observe
Candle that cracks or goes out before the end
Check the first candle for wind, heat, and quality. If everything is in order, light another one next Monday and redo the prayer request calmly.

Questions about the Black and Yellow Candle
Which Exu is the black and yellow candle for?
It is more linked to Exu do Ouro, the spiritual legion (falange) that houses associate with prosperity, and also to the povo de rua in general for requests regarding work and money. Some houses use it for Pombagira do Ouro. If in doubt, say who the candle is for when lighting it.
What is the best day to light the black and yellow candle?
Monday, which is the day of Exu in most houses. In commerce, many people light it early Monday, before opening the door, so the candle accompanies the entire week of sales.
Does the black and yellow candle attract money?
Not the way many advertisements promise. What is asked of Exu do Ouro is an open path, opportunity, and judgment to deal with what comes in. The gain continues to come from work, and no serious house guarantees results.
What is the difference between the black and yellow candle and the black and red one?
The black and red is the most traditional color of Exu and Pombagira, used for house guarding and cutting charge. The black and yellow leans toward prosperity: it keeps the protection of the black and exchanges the fire of the red for gold.
Can I light the black and yellow candle inside the house?
You can, near the entrance and far from the bedroom and the altar of the orixás. Exu is the guardian of the door, and his consecrated spot stays at that threshold. In an apartment, a corner of the living room near the door already fulfills the role.
Can I blow out the candle and what to do with the coins after?
Do not blow. If necessary, smother it with a saucer and light it again later. Once the candle is finished, the coins can go back to the register and circulate, or be left at a crossroads, according to the custom of your house.
