Golden Candle
Achievement, prosperity with brightness and gratitude, under the gold of Oxum (Oshun) and the Romani people
Golden Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
No one buys a golden candle by chance. It usually appears in moments marked on life's calendar: the shop door opening for the first time, the signed contract, the graduation, New Year's Eve, a home of one's own. While the yellow candle accompanies the day to day, the golden one is reserved for what carries the weight of a milestone, to ask that a big beginning be born blessed or to thank for what has already come.
In the terreiro, gold belongs to Oxum, the owner of the fresh waters, who carries the shiny metal abebé and is called the mother of the rich. Saturday is her day in most houses. The Romani people also have gold among their favorite colors, alongside coins, scarves, and fruits, and receive the candle in requests for abundance and luck in the paths. There are houses that use gold for Oxalá (Obatala) in celebration; this reading changes from terreiro to terreiro.
It is worth knowing what the golden candle is not: it is not a shortcut to easy money nor an amulet to get rich from one month to the next. In the foundation of Oxum, gold is the fruit of work, of care, and of generosity. The candle steadies the intention and opens the gaze; the path continues to be walked by you.
What is it for
What is the purpose of the Golden Candle
Gold is the yellow that turned into metal: the color of Oxum's gold and the coins of the Romani people. The gold candle is lit to consecrate an important beginning, to request prosperity with recognition and to thank for a victory that took a long time to arrive.
-
Opening a business on the right foot
On the day of the inauguration or in the first week of open doors, the gold candle consecrates the space and asks for customers, a good reputation, and steady hands for the work that begins.
-
Thanking for a great achievement
Passed the exam, bought the house, paid off the old debt. It is the candle of solemn thanks, lit for Oxum or for the spirit guide who accompanied the struggle until then.
-
Prosperity with recognition
For those who work well and are not seen: promotion, raise, appreciation of the service. The prayer request is that the effort appears and is paid for what it is worth, without stepping over anyone.
-
Consecrating the New Year and a new cycle
On the turn of the year, on a birthday, or when changing jobs, many people light the gold candle to open the cycle requesting abundance, joy, and courage for the choices to come.
-
Luck in the paths with the Romani people
The Romani people work with gold, coins, and the road. The gold candle comes in when requesting luck on a trip, a move to a new city, or a business that depends on good encounters.

-
Oxum
Mother of the rich, owner of the golden abebé
Gold is the metal of Oxum and gold comes right after yellow among her colors. She rules the wealth that is born from work and circulates like river water, and she receives the candle on Saturday, with flowers and care.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the golden candle to Oxum and to the Romani people
“Mother Oxum, who guards the gold at the bottom of the river, look at this flame that I light in your name. Today I do not come empty-handed: I bring what I have already conquered and what I still want to build. Bless this beginning and the hands that will work on it. May my effort be seen, may my service have value, and may the bread of this house never be lacking. Romani people, lords of the road, open the paths through which my work needs to pass and place honest people in my path. May the abundance that arrives not make me proud, and may I know how to share what I receive. Accept this light as gratitude for what came and as a promise of care for what will come. Ora Yeye Ô!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Golden Candle
- 1
Choose the time of the sun
The golden candle asks for daylight. Prefer to light it between morning and noon, preferably on a Saturday or on the exact day of the inauguration, the move, or the turn you want to consecrate.
- 2
Prepare the plate with bay leaf
Place the paper with the prayer request in the center of the plate, the candle on top, and the bay leaves in a circle. Bay leaf is the leaf of victory and marks that conquest is requested there, not luck by chance.
- 3
Scatter the coins and the flowers
Distribute the coins among the leaves and leave the vase with flowers nearby. For Oxum, the place needs to be beautiful. For the Romani, cheerful. A light or colorful cloth underneath helps.
- 4
Consecrate and speak of what has already come
Before the prayer request, thank out loud for what you already have. Light it with a match, greet Oxum with the greeting, say the prayer, and only then say what you want to build from then on.
- 5
Follow the week without blowing
The 7-day candle stays lit in a safe place. If you need to leave, smother it with a saucer and relight it upon your return. At the end, keep one coin in the cash drawer or in your wallet and give the others to those in need.
Precautions before lighting
- The 7-day candle heats the glass and may crack. Leave it on a ceramic plate, away from curtains, paper, merchandise, children, and animals, and do not leave the house with it lit without supervision.
- The golden candle asks for prosperity for you and for your work. Do not light it to hinder a competitor or to take what belongs to another person.
- Honey is an offering of Oxum in many houses, but in others it is a taboo (quizila). If you attend a terreiro, ask the zelador before adding honey to the candle.
- Assentamento (consecrated altar), obligations, and properly grounded work with Romani spirits are the responsibility of the leader of your house of axé. The candle lit at home accompanies faith, it does not take that place.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Golden Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
Firm, high, and luminous flame
Many houses read this as an accepted request and a well settled beginning. It is what is expected from a golden candle burning in an organized place without wind.
- Good sign
Flame that grows after the prayer
It is usually read as a sign that the gratitude arrived well and that the orixá (orisha) or the spirit guide is near. Continue with your part, without relaxing.
- Attention
Wick that creates a mushroom of soot
Some houses read this as a request that is too rushed or ambition greater than the moment. Reread what you asked, simplify, and light another candle with more calm.
- Attention
Flame that crackles and releases sparks
It may point to dispute or envy around the project. It is not a reason for fear: a herbal bath is worth doing before repeating and be careful with whom you share your plans.
- Observe
Glass completely clean at the end of the burning
On the 7-day candle, clean glass usually indicates a calm burn. If it turned dark, check the wick and the wax before reading anything and repeat with a quality candle.

Questions about the Golden Candle
Which orixá is the golden candle for?
In most houses, it is for Oxum, lady of gold and fresh waters. The Romani people also work a lot with gold. Some terreiros use the color for Oxalá on festival days, and this variation is legitimate: in doubt, follow what your house teaches.
What is the difference between a golden candle and a yellow candle?
Both speak to Oxum, but in different tones. The yellow one is for joy, sweetness, and the everyday. The golden one is reserved for milestones: inauguration, conquest, cycle turn, great gratitude. In the absence of one, the other can be consecrated in its place, stating what it is for.
What is the best day to light the golden candle?
Saturday, the day of Oxum, with the sun still high. For the Romani people, the day changes from house to house, and Friday is the most cited. For an inauguration or New Year's Eve, the best day is the day of the event itself, because the candle accompanies that beginning.
Does a golden candle attract money?
Not in the way many people imagine. It sets the prayer request for prosperity, but money does not sprout from the wax. In the tradition of Oxum and the Romani spirits, abundance comes from work, care, and sharing. The candle sets the intention; the choices and effort remain yours.
Can I light a golden candle in the store or at the company?
You can, in a safe place and with someone nearby. Use a ceramic plate, away from paper, fabric, and merchandise, and never leave it lit with the space closed. If there is no safe place, light it at home with the name of the business written underneath.
Can I blow out the golden candle before it finishes?
The ideal is for it to burn until the end. If you need to leave, smother it with a saucer or a spoon, without blowing, and relight it when you return. Many houses understand blowing as undoing the prayer request with your own breath.
What to do with the coins, the bay leaf, and the leftover wax?
One coin goes to the cash register or to the wallet, and the others are donated so that abundance may flow. The bay leaf can go into the soil of a pot, with one leaf kept in the wallet. The leftover wax goes wrapped in paper for the common trash.
