Golden and White Candle
Consecration of life milestones and prosperity with honor, under Oxum (Oshun) and Oxalá (Obatala)
Golden and White Candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Those who look for the gold and white candle almost always have a date in mind. It could be the key to a home, the deed to a company, a marriage, a parents' anniversary, or the end of a difficult phase. It is the candle of consecration: the gold calls for wealth and the brilliance of what begins, and the white asks that this beginning be born clean, blessed, and in peace with God and with the orixás (orishas).
In the foundation of Umbanda, both halves have an owner. Gold belongs to Oxum, lady of gold and fresh waters, who makes life flourish and prosper. White belongs to Oxalá, the father of creation, who gives the blessing and settles the head. Together, the colors say that abundance only has value when it comes with character. Some houses light this bicolor on Saturday, thinking of Oxum; others prefer Friday for Oxalá, and there are those who choose Sunday. Ask at your terreiro which custom it follows.
At home, it requires occasion and care. It is not a candle for every day or for a small request, and it also does not do the work in your place. What it does is mark the moment: you stop, thank for what has arrived so far, and ask that the next step be taken with honesty.
What is it for
What is the Gold and White Candle for
The gold and white candle joins the gold of Oxum to the white cloth of Oxalá. It is lit to consecrate a beginning that deserves a blessing, such as a house, company, or marriage, to request prosperity with a clean name, and to thank for a great grace with solemnity.
-
Bless the new house
On the first night at the new address, the candle in the center of the room asks that the home begin in peace and with abundance on the table. Light it after cleaning the house, never in the middle of the boxes.
-
Consecrate a company or partnership
In the week that the CNPJ is issued or the partnership is signed, it consecrates the business, asking for profit with ethics, good-faith clients, and agreements that are honored on both sides.
-
Marriage, engagement, and wedding anniversaries
Oxum takes care of love and union, Oxalá blesses the home that is born. There are couples who light the gold and white on the wedding day, and children who offer it on their parents' wedding anniversaries.
-
Prosperity without dirtying your name
For those who want to grow and be remembered for a word kept. The prayer request is that the money comes by a straight path, without hidden debt or a business to be ashamed of later.
-
To thank for a grace achieved
When an old prayer request is fulfilled, this bicolor candle is the solemn way to return to the altar and say thank you to Oxum, to Oxalá, and to the spirits that held your hand on the path.

Oxum
Lady of gold and sweet waters
Gold is one of the colors of Oxum, alongside golden yellow. She governs the wealth that multiplies, the love that becomes family, and the beauty of things well done. Therefore, she responds for the golden half of the candle, especially on Saturdays.
Know Oxum -
Oxalá
Pai who blesses and settles the head
Oxalá wears white and has Friday as his day. In the bicolor, the white half is his: it is the prayer request that the beginning is born in peace, with blessing and without pride, so that Oxum's gold does not go to the head.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the gold and white candle to Oxum and Oxalá
“Mãe Oxum, owner of the gold that flows like a river, and Pai Oxalá, lord of the white cloth, look upon this beginning that I present to you today. Bless this door, this name, and this step. May abundance enter here without trampling anyone, and may I know how to share what arrives. Free my house from envy, from haste, and from boundless ambition. May every coin earned come with clean sweat and may every agreement made here be kept by my word. I give thanks for what I have already received, which was not little, and I ask for wisdom to care for what comes. While this gold and white flame burns, stay with me. Ora Yeye Ô! Epa Babá!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Gold and White Candle
- 1
Prepare the space for the marker
Choose a spot linked to what will be consecrated: the living room of the new house, the shop counter, the office desk. Cover it with a white cloth and leave the space clean and tidy.
- 2
Write what will be blessed
On the paper, write the name of the house, the company, or the couple, and the date. Fold it and place it under the saucer. This way, the prayer request is addressed to what you want to consecrate.
- 3
Assemble the saucer with bay leaf and flowers
Scatter the bay leaves around the candle, place the flowers and the water nearby. The bay leaf asks for victory and recognition, and the flowers are the affection that Oxum likes to receive.
- 4
Light and present the beginning
Light it with a match, say in a low voice to whom the candle is offered and tell what is beginning. Pray the prayer and speak the prayer request in your own words, without demanding a deadline.
- 5
Follow the week and finish well
Do not blow out the candle at any time. At the end of the seven days, the water goes to the soil of a pot, the dried flowers to the garden, and the paper can be kept in a respectful place.
Precautions before lighting
- A 7-day candle needs a firm glass container, away from curtains, paper, and out of reach of children and animals. If you are going out, leave the candle in a firm place or smother the flame before.
- It blesses what is honest. Do not light it to take advantage of a partner, client, or relative; this use goes against the foundation of Oxum and of Oxalá.
- Consecration of a home or business with an orixá foundation, involving an obligation or assentamento, is done with the leader of your terreiro. A candle at home does not replace this.
- The candle accompanies the planning, it does not take its place. Contracts, accountants, and accounts on paper continue to be part of the care for what you are building.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Gold and White Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High and gold flame, without flickering
Many houses read this as a well-received beginning. What was presented to the altar is firm, and the week tends to run with tranquility.
- Good sign
Wax that melts evenly
When the two colors descend together, without one side burning more, the common reading is of balance between the gain and the peace that the request sought.
- Attention
Gold side that flows a lot
Some read it as a sign of anxiety with money. It is worth reviewing the request calmly, remembering the white of Oxalá, and proceeding without haste in decisions.
- Attention
Dark smoke at the beginning of the burning
May indicate old heaviness in the consecrated place. Do a simple cleaning of the environment and, if the smoke always returns, speak with a trusted terreiro.
- Observe
Low flame that quickly recovers
Usually it is the wick or wind. Check the position of the candle, move it away from the window, and let it continue. A short flicker does not change the reading of the week.

Questions about the Gold and White Candle
What is the gold and white candle for?
It serves to consecrate important beginnings, such as a new house, company, marriage and wedding anniversaries, and to request prosperity with honesty. The gold is from Oxum and calls for abundance; the white is from Oxalá and requests blessing and peace. It is also often used to give thanks for a great blessing.
What is the best day to light the gold and white candle?
It depends on the house. Those who think of Oxum light it on Saturday, and those who think of Oxalá prefer Friday. There are also those who choose Sunday or the day of the milestone itself, such as the date of the move or the inauguration. In doubt, follow the custom of your terreiro.
What is the difference between the gold and white candle and the gold candle?
The gold alone is the candle of conquest and brilliance, focused on victory and prosperity. With the white, the blessing of Oxalá enters: the request becomes for abundance with peace, a clean name and a blessed beginning. Therefore, the bicolor is the most requested to consecrate a house and union.
Is the gold and white candle for opening a business?
Yes, and that is why many people look for it. Light it in the week the business opens, in the place where the work will take place, with the name of the business written under the saucer. It asks for blessing and prosperity, but the management, taxes, and customer service remain in your hands.
Can I blow out the gold and white candle before seven days?
It is not recommended, because the week of light is part of the consecration. If the house will be empty and the candle is not protected, cover the flame with a metal lid until it goes out on its own. Upon returning, relight it and repeat the prayer request in a low voice. Never blow on it.
Can I light the gold and white candle at home without being from a terreiro?
You can. It is a candle of blessing and gratitude, well received in the prayer of anyone who lights it with respect. What should not be done at home without guidance is the consecration with the foundation of an orixá, which requires the leader of a terreiro and happens there.
What to do with the leftover wax and the water?
The water goes to the soil of a pot or the garden, and the cup is washed. The leftover wax and the glass go to the common trash, wrapped in paper. The paper with the name can be kept in a clean drawer or be buried in a pot with a plant.
