Zé Baiano / Povo da Bahia candle
7-day candle · stays lit for 7 days7 dias
Some people arrive at the Zé Baiano candle after months of carrying a nameless weight: everything gets stuck, sleep does not rest, and joy has disappeared from the house. This is the votive candle of the Povo da Bahia, with Seu Zé's label and the yellow and white colors divided horizontally. It is lit on the Umbanda congá, in the gira of Baianos, and in the little corner of the home of those who have faith in this northeastern man with a straw hat.
The Baianos are spirits of simple people from the sertão and the northeastern coast: rezadeiras (healers who pray), cowboys, market vendors, viola players. They arrived at the terreiros of the Center-South still in the first half of the 20th century, accompanying the northeastern migration, and became known for breaking spells and for their frank speech. The ruling orixá (orisha) changes from house to house. Iansã (Oya) and Oxalá (Obatala) appear frequently, many houses include Ogum (Ogun), and there are terreiros that place the line under the Almas, Oxóssi (Oshosi), or Xangô (Shango). The day of the gira also varies.
Lighting it for Seu Zé at home asks for the same thing he asks for in the gira: truth and disposition. He laughs, jokes, but does not go easy on those who play the victim. The candle helps to release what is stuck and to return the taste for the struggle. It does not replace an undoing work (desmanche) done in the terreiro, nor does it serve to bind anyone's will.
What is it for
What is the Zé Baiano Candle / Povo da Bahia for
Yellow and white, the candle of Zé Baiano is lit for Seu Zé and the entire Line of Baianos, who work under the irradiation of Iansã and Oxalá. It serves to undo demanda, remove the weight from the body and the house, recover spirit, and protect those who are far away.
-
Undo demanda and spell
When life stalled all at once and nothing explains the delay. The Baiano is known for undoing (desmanche), and the candle anchors this prayer request while you also seek the guidance of a house.
-
Remove evil eye and envy
For those who grew up working, opened a business, or changed their lives and began to feel the weight of looks. The prayer request is for Seu Zé to cut this load before it takes root.
-
Recover spirit and joy
In phases when getting out of bed is hard and laughter has disappeared. The energy of the Baiano is hot and brave, and the candle is lit to ask for the will to face the day to return.
-
Strength for heavy ritual work
For those who live by manual labor, at the market, at a construction site, or on a double shift. Seu Zé knows the toil and is called to give energy and strength to those who cannot stop.
-
Protect those who are far from home
The Baiano is a person of the road and of migration. Many families light this candle for a child who went to try their luck in another city, asking for a safe path and welcome wherever they may be.

-
Seu Zé Baiano
Head of the spiritual legion of the Povo da Bahia
It is the name that leads the line in many terreiros and the face on the label of this candle. He works with coco, dendê, farofa and strong prayer, and is called when the demanda is stubborn and needs someone who does not back down.
-
Iansã
Lady of the winds and of the eguns
A large part of the houses place the Baianos under the irradiation of Iansã. Yellow, the most universal color of the Baianos, is also the color of Iansã in many houses of Umbanda, and it is from her the wind that sweeps away stagnant energy and the courage that the line takes for the desmanche.
Know Iansã -
Oxalá
Father of creation, lord of white
The white of the top half is from Oxalá, the peace that comes after the cleansing. In the Baiano syncretism, Oxalá meets with the Senhor do Bonfim, the patron that the Baianos invoke with such affection.

Prayer to light
Prayer of the Zé Baiano candle to the Povo da Bahia
“Seu Zé Baiano, man of a straw hat and firm step, I arrive here with a heavy house and a tired chest. I light this yellow and white candle to ask permission from your falange. Strike your straw on my path and undo what was done against me, without returning evil to anyone. Remove from my door the evil eye, the laziness that is not mine, and the sadness that arrived without an invitation. Give me your bravery for my work and your laughter for the difficult days. Mãe Iansã, blow your wind and take away what remained still. Pai Oxalá, leave peace in place of what left. May I have the courage to do my part. Hail the Povo da Bahia!”Light the candle and pray
Step by step
How to consecrate the Candle of Zé Baiano / Povo da Bahia
- 1
Take a cleansing bath (banho de descarrego) first
Arruda or guiné macerated in water, from the neck down. Seu Zé works better with those who already arrive open to release the charge, and the ritual bath does that part of the path.
- 2
Set up the corner on the floor or low
The Baianos like firm ground. A clean corner, near the floor or on a low table, away from curtains. Those who have a tronqueira follow the orientation of their own house.
- 3
Serve the coconut and the farofa to the side
The coconut water glass stays next to the candle and the farofa on a separate small plate, in the arrangement your house teaches. It is the offering of the povo baiano, simple like the table of the sertão. No strong drink in the house without orientation.
- 4
Light it and call by name
Light with a match, hail the Povo da Bahia and say the full name of the one who needs the undoing. Perform the prayer and tell the problem as you would tell a friend, without beating around the bush.
- 5
Give thanks and perform the despacho at the end
Let the flame burn until the end, without blowing. Then, the farofa goes to the soil of a garden, the water to the root of a plant, and the wax to the trash, wrapped in paper.
Precautions before lighting
- A 7-day candle stays lit for a long time: keep it away from cloth, paper, and out of reach of children and pets, always on a plate that can withstand the heat.
- Undoing a spell that was cast and an old demanda are resolved with guidance. For this, seek out the leader of a terreiro that works this line.
- Seu Zé undoes evil, he does not send evil back. Do not light this candle to harm someone or to bend another person's will.
- Cachaça, tobacco, and other gira elements are left to your house's guidance. At home, coconut and farofa are enough as an offering.
Ceromancy
What the flame of the Zé Baiano / Povo da Bahia Candle shows
Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.
- Good sign
High flame that dances and crackles
Many houses read the live and crackling flame as the way the Baiano arrives: cheerful, moving. The undoing of the spell is under way and the request was received.
- Good sign
Low and firm flame, without trembling
Quiet work. The candle is holding steady without fanfare, like someone cleaning slowly. It is a common burn in seven-day votive candles.
- Attention
A lot of black smoke at the beginning
It is usually read as heavy load being burned. If the smoke decreases over the days, the cleansing continued. If it persists until the end, seek a gira of Baianos.
- Attention
Darkened candle glass
Some houses understand that the demanda was great and the candle took it for itself. Wash the glass, light the candle again the following week and talk to a trusted zelador.
- Observe
Candle that goes out before the end
Check the wind first, the drowned wick and the quality of the wax. If everything is correct, relight with a match, redo the greeting and follow the week.
Ritual bath and smoke cleansing (defumação)
Herbs that pair with the Zé Baiano / Povo da Bahia Candle

guiné / Tipi
Petiveria alliacea
Cuts the charge that sticks and keeps away those who arrive with bad intentions. Works well in a ritual bath and as a branch next to the saucer in the undoing ritual (desmanche).

Jatropha gossypiifolia
Protection plant from the northeastern backyard. One plant at the entrance or a branch next to the candle reinforces the prayer request against evil eye and envy.
See the herb -
Rosemary
Rosmarinus officinalis
Closes the cleansing with joy. After the seven days, a rosemary ritual bath returns the lightness that the Baiano likes to leave in place of the charge.

Questions about the Zé Baiano / Povo da Bahia Candle
What is the right day to light the candle of Zé Baiano?
There is no single day. Many houses honor the Baianos on Monday, others on Saturday or Thursday, according to the gira of the line. If you attend a terreiro, follow the day there. At home, Monday in the late afternoon is the most common choice.
Is Zé Baiano an Exu (Eshu) or does he work on the left side?
No. Zé Baiano is a spirit guide of the Linha dos Baianos, a spirit from the Northeast who works in Umbanda. Some houses hold a baiano gira near the left side or share a session with Exus because of the desmanche, but that does not make him an Exu.
What is the difference between the Zé Baiano candle and the Zé Pilintra candle?
They are neighboring lines, but different. Zé Baiano is from the people of the sertão and the northeastern coast, called upon to undo spells and lift spirits, and the candle is yellow and white. Zé Pilintra is a malandro, linked to the street and to Jurema, and his candle is red and white.
Can I light the Zé Baiano candle at home without being a medium?
You can. The candle is a prayer and anyone of faith can light it for the Povo da Bahia with respect. What remains for the terreiro is the deeper spell-breaking work, spirit incorporation, and the use of drink and tobacco, which depend on the guidance of a house.
Can I blow out the Baiano 7-day candle and light it again?
It is best to let it burn continuously. If the flame goes out or you need to leave, smother it with a saucer, never blow, and relight it with a match greeting the line once again. The request remains valid, just do not leave the candle sitting for days.
What to do with the farofa and the coconut water afterwards?
When the candle finishes, the farofa goes to the earth of a garden or a large pot, and the coconut water goes to the root of a plant. Wash the cup and the saucer. The wax and the glass go to the common trash, wrapped in paper.
