The Sant'Ana candle is the candle of the grandmother's house. The one that stays lit in the living room's prayer altar, next to the portraits of the elders, while Sunday lunch brings children and grandchildren together. It is lilac, a color that in Brazil accompanies the devotion to Sant'Ana because of the syncretism with Nanã (Nana Buruku), but many Catholic families prefer white. Both serve the same prayer request.

The gospels do not speak of Mary's parents. The names of Anne and Joachim come from an ancient text, the Protoevangelium of James, which tells how the couple waited many years for a daughter. The feast of Saint Anne on July 26 was established in the 16th century, and after the Second Vatican Council it also became the feast of Saint Joachim. In Brazil, the date became Grandparents' Day and, in the terreiros, the day to greet Nanã, the oldest of the orixás (orishas).

At home, this candle asks for peace, not control. It does not decide the children's lives nor solve inheritance disputes alone. It helps the elders to advise without imposing and the younger ones to listen without despising, which is the wisdom that is asked of the grandmother of Jesus. It is a light of gathering, more than of a prayer request.

What is it for

What is the Sant'Ana Candle for

The lilac Saint Anne candle is lit by grandparents and by those who want to see the family in peace. It also accompanies the woman who desires a child, the pregnant woman, and those who have reached maturity asking for patience and wisdom to advise the younger ones.

  • Blessing and health for the grandparents

Light it for living grandparents, requesting health, clarity, and companionship, and for those who have passed, thanking them for what they left behind. It is the most beautiful candle for July 26.

  • Peace when the family is at war

For a home where siblings do not speak to each other or where the division of assets soured everything. The prayer request is that each one returns to see the other as family, not as an adversary.

  • Protection for those who desire a child

Ana waited years for her daughter. Women trying to conceive and pregnant women light the candle requesting serenity in the wait, along with medical follow-up.

  • Wisdom to educate children and grandchildren

Saint Anne is remembered as the one who taught Mary. The candle is for parents and grandparents who need patience to educate, to correct without hurting, and to pass on the faith of the home.

  • Serenity in old age

For those who feel the body asking for more rest and the head asking for meaning. Light it requesting a peaceful, useful old age, with respect and without loneliness.

To whom it is dedicated

Devotion to Saint Anne

  • Illustration of Saint Anne in sacred art

    Saint Anne

Mother of Mary, grandmother of Jesus, patron saint of grandparents

Wife of Joaquim and mother of Mary, according to ancient tradition. Patron saint of grandparents, of mothers, and of dozens of Brazilian cities, she is painted in a green mantle and with the book with which she taught her daughter to read.

  • Illustration of Nanã in sacred art

    Nanã

The oldest of the orixás, associated with the saint

Wise old age brought Jesus' grandmother and the lady of the primordial mud together, and July 26 became the day of Nanã, hence the lilac of the candle. The syncretism is historical, and many houses today separate the two and greet Nanã on Saturday.

Prayer to light

Saint Anne candle prayer for the family

“Saint Anne, woman who waited with patience and received from God a daughter who changed the world, look over my family. I light this lilac light for the elders of this house, who have already carried much weight and deserve rest, and for the little ones, who will still learn almost everything. Put judgment where there is fighting, affection where there is distance, and conversation where there is silence. Support the woman who desires a child and the one who is already expecting, so that the child arrives with health. Teach me to be, one day, a gentle and wise presence for those who come after me, as you were for Mary. Long live Saint Anne!”

Step by step

How to set the Saint Anne Candle

  1. 1

    Gather the family photos

Place a photo of the grandparents or the family gathered near the candle. If there is someone distant, put that person's photo as well, without resentment.

  2. 2

Arrange the water and the flowers

Candle on the saucer, a glass of water beside it, and the lilac flowers in front. The water recalls the origin of Nanã for those who follow syncretism, and the flowers decorate the oratory.

  3. 3

Speak the names of three generations

Hold the unlit candle and say the names of the grandparents, the parents, and the children. It is a way to remember that the family is a chain, and every link matters.

  4. 4

    Light and say the prayer

Light it with a match and say the prayer on this page. If there are grandchildren nearby, call them to pray together. Grandmothers usually complete with a Hail Mary.

  5. 5

Let the candle finish in peace

Do not blow it out. If you need to leave, smother it with a lid and light it again when you return. The water goes into a vase, the flowers into the earth when they wither, and the wax into the trash.

Precautions before lighting

  • A lit candle in an elderly person's home requires attention: on a firm surface, away from curtains and crochet tablecloths, and never in the room of someone who sleeps alone.
  • During pregnancy or when trying to conceive, the candle accompanies, it never replaces. Follow the prenatal care and the guidance of your doctor.
  • If you are from a terreiro and want to consecrate Nanã, the one who guides the color, day, and offering is the zelador of your house. Saint and orixá have different foundations.
  • The candle is not for deciding inheritance disputes in favor of someone. Devotion to Saint Anne asks for peace and justice for everyone in the family.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Saint Anne Candle shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

    Serene and high flame

Many families read it as a welcomed blessing. The house is protected, and the message is to continue cultivating peace with small gestures.

  • Attention

Flame that curves to one side

Some read it as someone in the family asking for attention. Call those who have been away, visit a grandparent, or send the first message after a fight.

  • Observe

Wax that drips and forms a puddle

It could be a soft wax candle or heat in the room. Some grandmothers read it as held-back tears. Let the wax cool and continue praying calmly.

  • Attention

    Smoke that darkens the glass

It could be a high wick. Traditionally read as old resentment in the house. Talk, forgive what you can, and if the weight continues, seek guidance in your faith.

  • Good sign

Candle that lasts longer than normal

Some read it as protection that extends through the family. Take the opportunity to thank the elders who are still close.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Saint Anne Candle

What is the Saint Anne candle for?

It serves to ask for a blessing for grandparents, peace in the family, support for those who desire or are waiting for a child, and wisdom to educate. It is a candle of the home and of generations, lit by Catholics and by many people of terreiro on July 26.

What is Saint Anne's Day and why is it Grandparents Day?

Saint Anne's Day is July 26, together with Saint Joachim, her husband. Since the two are the parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus, the date became Grandparents Day in Brazil. During the week, those who follow the connection with Nanã prefer Saturday.

Are Saint Anne and Nanã the same figure?

No. Saint Anne is the mother of Mary in the Christian tradition, and Nanã is the oldest orixá, linked to the mud and the origin of life. Wise old age brought the two together in Brazil. The syncretism is historical, and many houses today separate the saint and the orixá.

Why is the Saint Anne (Sant'Ana) candle lilac?

The lilac comes from the syncretism with Nanã, who in the terreiros receives lilac, purple, and white. In the church, there is no mandatory color, and many Catholic families light a white candle for the saint. Choose the one that makes sense in your home.

Can I light the candle of Saint Anne to get pregnant?

You can, as a prayer of hope. Saint Anne is remembered for having waited a long time for Mary, and for that reason, she is sought by those who desire a child. The candle accompanies medical care; it does not replace exams or treatment.

What is the difference between Saint Anne and Our Lady?

Saint Anne is the mother of Our Lady. Mary is the mother of Jesus, and Anne is his grandmother. In old statues, Saint Anne appears older, in a green mantle, often teaching the girl Mary to read in an open book.
