The Saint Barbara candle is the candle for those who look at a closed sky and feel their hearts tighten. It has been lit in Catholic homes for a long time, when the thunder roars and the light goes out, and also in Umbanda terreiros on December 4. The best-selling version is red on top and white on the bottom, but some prefer the candle entirely red, and both serve.

Tradition tells that Barbara lived in the Roman East, imprisoned in a tower by her father, Dioscorus. Converted, she ordered a third window to be opened in honor of the Trinity. Her father denounced her and executed her himself, and shortly after, a lightning bolt struck him. For this reason, she became the protector against lightning, fire, and sudden death. In Brazil, the force of the storm brought the saint close to Iansã (Oya), in a syncretism born from the time when the orixá (orisha) needed to hide.

At home, the Saint Barbara candle is not for asking for punishment for anyone. It guards, gives courage, and calms. Those who fear storms usually leave it lit during the rainy season, and those facing a difficult decision light it so they do not give up in the middle of the path.

What is it for

What is the Saint Barbara Candle for

The Saint Barbara candle joins the red of martyrdom and the white of faith. It is lit by those who fear storms, by those who work with fire and danger, and by those who need courage to sustain a choice that the family does not accept.

  • Home protection during storms

It is the oldest use. Light it when the sky darkens, away from the window, and ask that the house, the electrical grid, and those who live there stay protected until the storm passes.

  • Protection for those who deal with fire and danger

Barbara is the patron saint of firefighters, miners, electricians, and artillerymen. Light it for those who leave for a risky job and return home at the end of the day.

  • Courage not to back down from what is just

For those who need to sustain a choice in the face of pressure, including within the family. The candle asks for serene firmness, without fighting and without arrogance.

  • Strength when fear paralyzes

Fear of thunder, of the hospital, of a difficult conversation. Light it and deliver the fright to the saint who did not flee from the tower. The prayer request is courage to take the first step.

  • Honor the saint on December 4

On her day, churches hold mass and procession and many terreiros celebrate Iansã with caruru. Lighting the candle on this day is to thank for the protection of the entire year.

Devotion to Saint Barbara

  • Illustration of Saint Barbara in sacred art

    Saint Barbara

The virgin martyr of the tower, protector in storms

Martyr of the first centuries, remembered with the tower of three windows, the palm, and the chalice. The lightning that fell upon the father made her the saint of storms, and the red of the candle speaks of the blood of martyrdom.

  • Illustration of Iansã in sacred art

    Iansã

Lady of the winds, close to the saint

The syncretism is historical: enslaved people greeted Iansã before the statue of the saint of lightning. Today many houses separate the two and light the candle of Iansã separately, on Wednesday.

Prayer to light

Candle prayer of Saint Barbara for the hour of the storm

“Saint Barbara, girl of the tower of three windows, you who guarded the faith when everyone ordered silence, watch over this house. The sky is heavy and my chest is too. I light this red and white light and ask that no lightning reaches us, no fire takes us and no bad news arrives suddenly. Guard those who are on the road, those who work in danger and those who sleep under this roof. And if fear comes, lend me a bit of your quiet courage, that which does not scream and does not flee. May I know how to stand firm in what is right, even when the wind blows against. Long live Saint Barbara!”

Step by step

How to consecrate the Candle of Saint Barbara

  1. 1

Choose a corner protected from the wind

In the storm, the draft puts out the candle and spreads sparks. Prefer a firm shelf in the middle of the house, away from curtains and open windows.

  2. 2

Arrange the water and the statue

The glass of water stays next to the candle. The statue or the holy card, if you have one, stays behind. A red rose or a sprig of rosemary completes the simple altar.

  3. 3

Say who you want to protect

With the candle still unlit in your hands, speak the names of the people in the house and of those who are away. Saint Barbara is remembered as the guardian of those exposed to danger.

  4. 4

    Light and pray the prayer

Light with a match and pray the prayer on this page. Whoever wishes can complete it with an Our Father and a Hail Mary, as is done in old houses when the thunder begins.

  5. 5

Let the candle burn until the end

Do not blow it out. If you are leaving, smother it with a lid and relight it upon your return. The water goes into the soil of a pot, and the leftover wax, wrapped in paper, goes into the common trash.

Precautions before lighting

  • In a storm with lightning, the candle does not replace unplugging appliances from the outlet and staying away from windows, trees, and wires. Faith and prudence go together.
  • A 7-day candle stays lit for days: leave it on ceramic or glass, away from curtains, children, and animals, and never near a draft.
  • If you are from a terreiro and want to consecrate Iansã, the one who guides color, day, and offering is the zelador of your house. The saint's candle does not replace this fundamento.
  • If fear comes from illness or a treatment, the candle accompanies, it does not replace. Always follow your doctor's guidance.

Ceromancy

What the flame of the Candle of Saint Barbara shows

Traditional terreiro reading. Before interpreting, check if there is no wind, crooked wick, or poor quality candle.

  • Good sign

High and straight flame, without flickering

Many devotees read it as welcomed protection. The house is guarded and the message is to proceed calmly, even if the weather outside continues to be bad.

  • Attention

    Flame that agitates without wind

Some houses read it as tension in the environment or a suppressed fight. Check doors and windows, talk calmly at home and pray again before sleeping.

  • Observe

    Sparks and crackles

It is almost always moisture in the wax or a long wick. There are those who read it as force in motion. Trim the wick and keep the candle away from fabric.

  • Attention

    Glass darkened by soot

It could be a high wick. Many houses read it as weight to be cleared. Perform a smoke cleansing (defumação) with rosemary, change the water and, if the sign repeats always, seek a trusted terreiro.

  • Observe

Candle that goes out in the middle

On a stormy day, the wind is the first suspect. Relight without fear, with the same prayer request, in a more protected place in the house.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Saint Barbara candle

What is the Saint Barbara candle for?

It serves to ask for protection of the house in thunderstorms, support for those who work with fire and danger, and courage to face fear. It is a candle of guard and of firmeza, lit by Catholics and by many people of Umbanda who celebrate December 4.

What is Saint Barbara's day and when to light the candle?

Her day is December 4. Outside of that date, light it when the weather closes in or when you need courage. Those who follow the connection with Iansã usually choose Wednesday, which is the day of the orixá in the week.

Are Saint Barbara and Iansã the same person?

No. Saint Barbara is a Christian martyr, and Iansã is an orixá of Yoruba origin. The proximity was born in slavery, when the people of the orixás greeted the orixá before the Catholic statue. Today, many houses prefer to separate the two and light specific candles for each one.

Is the Saint Barbara candle red or red and white?

Both are used. The red and white joins the blood of martyrdom and the purity of faith, and it is the one many terreiros light on December 4. The all red one is common in Catholic shops. Choose the one that your house or your family usually uses.

Can I blow out the candle of Saint Barbara during the storm?

You can, if it is a matter of safety. Cover it with a lid, without blowing, and relight it when the wind calms down. The prayer request remains valid, and it is better to relight it than to leave the flame near a flapping window.

Is Saint Barbara still a saint of the Church?

Yes. In 1969 the feast was removed from the general calendar of Rome because almost nothing of her life can be proven, but she remains on the list of saints, and the devotion continues alive in parishes, fire stations, and chapels throughout Brazil.
