There is a fleshy leaf that we pluck, leave on top of the sink and, days later, find full of little seedlings growing on the very edge. It multiplies itself, without roots, without soil, without anyone's help.
This is the fortune leaf, known in the terreiro as saião. The name is not for decoration: it is the leaf of multiplication, and in Candomblé it represents the axé that grows and spreads. This guide explains what saião is, which orixá it belongs to, what it is used for and how to use it without making mistakes.
What is saião
Saião is the terreiro name for Kalanchoe pinnata, also registered as Bryophyllum pinnatum, of the Crassulaceae family. It is a succulent plant, with thick leaves full of water, originating from Madagascar and Africa. Today it grows in backyards, walls and pots all over Brazil.
It has many names. You will hear fortune leaf, coast leaf, coirama, corama, courama, leaf of life and for everything. All point to the same plant.
The trait that gives it its name is rare in the plant world. In the undulations of the leaf's edge, small seedlings grow ready, with roots and everything. It is enough for the leaf to fall on the ground for a new plant to sprout. This effortless multiplication is the key to understanding the place of saião in the religion.
In the foundation of the leaves, the reading is direct: the plant that reproduces on its own edge carries the axé of multiplication. What it touches tends to grow, yield and spread.
Attention to a common confusion. There are other similar Kalanchoe species, such as Kalanchoe brasiliensis, called saião or coirama-branca. They are sister plants, with similar popular use, but different species. When buying, check the name with the supplier.
Which orixá is saião belongs to
Saião is a leaf of Oxalá. It belongs to the group of cool, calm leaves linked to water and peace, the field of the father of creation. Therefore, it is used in ritual work for serenity, harmony, and the consecrated foundation (assentamento) of the head.
Even so, saião is not restricted to a single owner. It is one of the leaves of the coast, the group of foundation leaves that serves all Orixás. By multiplying the axé, it enters compositions dedicated to various energies, always adding strength to the set.
It is worth remembering the path of every leaf. Before reaching Oxalá or any other Orixá, the leaf's axé passes through Ossaim, the owner of the ewé, the leaves, and the herbs. Without Ossaim (Osanyin), no leaf works. This is the basis of the green foundation in Candomblé.
In Umbanda, saião keeps the same reading: a leaf of peace, prosperity, and protection, linked to the line of Oxalá. Different houses may have variations in foundation, and this is normal. An herb has no single owner: it has a house foundation.
What is saião used for in the terreiro
Saião is a foundation leaf, not for quick sympathy. The most recorded uses in African-rooted houses are these:
- Head obrigação: it enters the bori, the ritual of strengthening the ori, due to its calm and multiplying energy
- Amaci: it composes the ritual washing of the head, along with other cool leaves
- Ritual bath of peace and prosperity: it cleanses weight and opens space for what needs to grow
- Defumação: the leaf on the ember, harmonizing the environment
- Assentamento and axé compositions: by enhancing the effect of the other leaves
The strong point of saião is to add. It multiplies the axé of the herbs that accompany it. In a leaf composition, it works as an amplifier: it pulls up the strength of the set.
It is worth saying what saião is not. It does not undo ritual work, it does not resolve a situation in a set timeframe, and it does not guarantee results. What the leaf does is prepare and strengthen the field, like every herb of fundamento. Whoever sells saião promising instant money is selling expectation.
How to use saião
Ritual bath of peace and prosperity
- Boil 1 liter of water and turn off the heat.
- Gather 5 to 7 leaves of saião torn by hand, never cut with a metal knife. Cover and let infuse for 15 minutes.
- Strain and wait for it to cool down.
- Take your normal hygiene bath first.
- Pour from the neck down, calmly, thinking of the intention of peace and growth.
- Do not rinse. Let it dry naturally.
Saião combines well with cool leaves like basil, colônia, and boldo in harmony baths. For a ready-made compound recipe, the seven herbs ritual bath is a good starting point.
Amaci
Saião is one of the classic leaves of the amaci, the sacred washing of the head. Here everything changes: amaci is a terreiro rite, performed under the guidance of the pai or mãe de santo. It is not an internet recipe. If you feel you need amaci, seek your house.
Smoke cleansing
Place a torn leaf over the embers or charcoal of the censer. Pass through the rooms from inside to outside, ending at the street door. The complete step by step is in the smoke cleansing guide.
Saião as a medicinal plant
Saião has a second life, outside the altar. It is one of the most used medicinal plants in Brazilian popular tradition, and science is already looking at this with attention.
The leaf is rich in flavonoids. Popular use points to anti-inflammatory and healing action. It is common to heat the leaf and apply it over bruises and wounds, or drink the juice for gastritis complaints. The UFSC Didactic Garden of Medicinal Plants registers the Kalanchoe pinnata as a food and medicinal plant, with the use of the leaf in natura.
Two honest caveats. First, the religious use of saião is ritual and external: ritual bath, amaci, smoke cleansing (defumação). Second, medicinal use does not replace a doctor. The plant helps, it does not cure alone, and every body responds differently. In case of pregnancy, chronic illness, or use of medication, speak with a health professional first.
What never to do with saião
Do not treat the leaf as a money amulet. The name "fortune leaf" speaks of the multiplication of axé, not of a guaranteed windfall. The leaf strengthens the field, and the rest is the journey.
Do not cut the leaf with metal for the ritual bath. The tradition of cold leaves asks that it be torn by hand. It is a gesture of respect to the foundation and to the axé of Ossaim.
Do not perform amaci on your own. Amaci deals with the ori, the spiritual head. This is the work of a priest, with fundamento, never improvisation.
Do not trust any homemade juice for a serious illness. Saião helps with mild complaints in popular tradition, but severe gastritis, ulcers, and wounds that do not close are cases for a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Are saião and fortune leaf the same thing?
Yes. Saião, fortune leaf, coast leaf, coirama, and para tudo are popular names for the same plant, the Kalanchoe pinnata. The difference is only in the region and the use. In the terreiro, people speak more of saião and coast leaf; in medicinal tradition, of fortune leaf and coirama.
Which Orixá is saião?
Saião is the leaf of Oxalá, linked to cold waters, peace, and calm. But, as coast leaf, it serves all Orixás and enters compositions of various fundamentos. All the axé of the leaf passes first through Ossaim, owner of the ewé.
What is the saião ritual bath for?
The saião bath is a bath of peace and prosperity. It cleanses energetic weight and opens space for what needs to grow in a person's life. It is not a strong descarrego bath, but one of harmony. It combines with cool leaves like basil and colônia.
Can I use saião every day?
It is not the custom. Saião is a leaf of harmony, and a peace bath works well once a week. Amaci and obrigação have their own calendars, defined by the house. Daily use does not increase the effect and takes away the sense of ritual from the practice.
Is saião good for gastritis?
In popular tradition, yes, the leaf is used for stomach complaints, and there are studies investigating this action. Even so, saião juice does not replace medical treatment. Persistent gastritis needs a diagnosis and follow-up from a health professional.
